I stayed here for 3 nights in late September after staying at the Axel Hotel in Berlin In April (see my previous review of this hotel). We arrived, and first impressions of the hotel and reception were good. We arrived at 12.30, and were told we could not check in until 2pm as our room was not ready. We decided to go to the roof bar for a drink to wait until 2pm. The roof bar was exactly how I imagined in the pictures with a good view over roof tops, a Jacuzzi and small swimming pool. We got chatting to some American guests who also were waiting to check-in. They had arrived at 8.30 am in the morning!
At 2pm we checked in, and wad told our room was not ready and we have to wait another 20 minutes or so! This really annoyed me, as we had already been there 1 ½ hours although we were early. We were offered an ‘upgraded’ room, which we were warned had a view of the internal light-well, but would be quieter, and had a King size bed, we decided to take this offer. We entered our allocated room which without exaggeration over-look a metal wall which was located only about 2m away from the window. This offered a very bleak outlook and made the room dark and depressing. We decided we weren’t happy with this, and decided to ask for another room. The room did not appear as an ‘upgrade’ in any way.
The receptionist was ok with our request, but stated the other room was not ready. We were offered a room with a street view, which also had a King Size bed. We were not offered this option previously, and it seemed to me, they tired to put in a poor room first. We had to wait about 5 minutes, then was told out room was ready. The room had a nice outlook over the street, and was a 100% better than the first room we were allocated.
The room was decorated with a patterned beige wall paper and was very ‘average’, nothing like the rooms at the Berlin Axel which had a ‘wow’ factor and sleek and modern feel. The en-suite was standard, no feature showers like Axel Berlin and the loo seat was cracked and has obviously signs of wear and tear. The room was disappointing in terms of its style and décor, when comparing it to the rooms in Axel Berlin. One day the loo would not flush and the reception were very quick and coming to fix the problem.
One day we went to use the spa facilities in the basement, and were told there was a 7 euro fee for hotel guests. I assumed this would be free to guests, this was not made clear before booking.
In summary pro’s are the roof top pool, terrace and bar which were lovely and gave the hotel a unique selling point, and location in the gay area for nearby bars etc.
The con’s were, boring/ basic rooms in terms of decor, poor customer service in terms of checking in, and the fact our room was not available when checking in. I think for what we paid there are better value for money hotels, and I probably would not stay here again. I far preferred the Axel in Berlin, which was too cheaper.
The internal rooms have no outlook and are dark and very gloomy

About the check in we are sorry, but is not a costumer service problem, the problem is that we are very fully booked and some guest leave the room late and housekeeping has to get in and cleaned very good for you!
