“Good Value for Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

Always design, the hotel was renovated and the prices are rather lower. Efficient, sympathic serious (and handsome) staff provide an excellent service at the front desk as for the house keeping and in the Restaurant which is great if you like modern cooking (We didn't try breakfast).
Premium Rooms are perfect, very clean with excellent bedding, they are on the street which is very noisy but windows are providing a good protection. Smaller rooms on the back could be quieter but darker.
Design of the shower rooms disadvantage privacy and a curtain would be welcome, it was also missing an outlet for hair dryer (included).
Last regret, the wifi system is not practical, connection is complicated and codes are changing too often.
Conclusion: Good performance according to my passed Axel experience.

Having stayed at the sister hotel in Berlin, we had high expectations of our stay at the Axel Barcelona – but we were disappointed. It has a good location just outside the high tourist zone yet a convenient 10-minute walk from it. The front desk was both efficient and friendly. The lobby area was appealing - but very insecure. It was possible to enter/exit the stairs to the rooms from the street bypassing the front desk – not a good idea in a city of this size. The room – supposedly a “premium room” was frankly dated. The bed was comfortable enough – but student-style rack furniture is just so impractical and old-fashioned. The bathroom/toilet areas needed remedial attention (e.g. the Jacuzzi bath was stained) and the towels were old and deep-marked each day that we were there. One day, we actually cleaned the wash basin ourselves. From managing to view the standard rooms adjoining, it was clear that “premium room” simply meant extra space around the bed and little more – hardly worth the extra euros. The breakfast area was definitely design over substance; if you were not there quick enough to grab a proper seat, you were left with either a foot-stool or bar stool; and the choices of fruit and cereals were very limited. Hotel coffee is rarely great, but the Axel coffee was dreadful (and cold). Whether “hetero-friendly” or “gay”, we felt that it was priced for these labels rather than really good value. We’re not likely to return.

Room Tip: Don't bother paying for a "premium room" - it's simply not worth it!

The good: Efficient and friendly check-in; staff helpful in recommending and selling Barcelona tours; pleasant, spacious room (premium room) with attractive enclosed balcony with chairs.
The average: breakfast: fruit selection was restricted to just melon and pineapple.
The not so good: towels were old and soiled; bedroom walls were thin (could hear next door room's bathroom); the soap and shampoo were lower than usual standard for a premium room.

Overall verdict: friendly and efficient but needs an upgrade and more attention to detail.

We stayed one week and enjoyed our visit. Hotel is nice and you can walk to almost every city location in Barcelona. Great selection of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. Standard is nice and all staff are friendly and can speak english.

Well what a great hotel

Having read some of the reviews a mixed bag really

recetion on arrival were friedly prompt and had all the information you needed for a quick check in

The room faced out onto the main street on the 2nd floor very clean and compact and super bathroom shower the beds and towels changed every day if you so wish what a pleasure staying there very gay friendly and straight friendly all in all a hotel within easy reach of bars and resturants etc

Did not rate the roof terrace much in the day but hey not our bag really a bit expensive drink wise too
although a very nice touch and nice later on in the evening where it was rocking DJ and a nice crowd of people the place to be seen

Breakfast was top notch and always presented well and the service was very good

so Well done to all you made our stay super

on point would of been nice to be able to make a coffee or tea first thing in the morning but alas no tea tray etc not the end of the world though

Room Tip: street view rooms better

We booked a year in advance and got a great deal on a 7 night stay at the Axel hotel Barcelona. On arrival we were greeted by the friendly and smiling reception staff and offered an upgrade for a nominal charge which we agreed to. Thankfully we did, as obviously our rooms would have been much smaller with no view to speak of, and no balcony. Our friends had arrived earlier and also took up the offer of upgrading but they also received free wi-fi ….When we questioned this for ourselves the reception staff member was quite put out and had obviously forgotten that this was part of the deal. Anyway it got settled, however the free wi-fi only lasted 2 days and they had to keep re-setting it each time with new passwords ???. The rooms were very nice and comfortable and there were free t-shirts from Emporio Armani on the beds as a promotion, which just happened to fit perfectly. nice touch. The shower was great and was in full view of the room…the only thing was that the room only had huge dark curtains and no net curtains, therefore if you had a shower the neighbours would be able to see you, if they were looking of course, unless you closed the heavy dark curtains. The roof top pool was fantastic and a great place to relax and listen to the music, although the drinks were a tad expensive. On occasion they ran out of pool towels and when you asked for one they simply said they had run out?? Not a good answer to a paying guest. The breakfast was excellent and the staffs regularly replenished things and were very friendly. I was looking forward to using the gym but was advised by reception that there would be an extra charge? I was not prepared to pay for this as a guest of the hotel, it should have been free. The hotel was very well situated with plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs within easy walking distance, and not too far from the shopping areas. Overall I would recommend the Axel and hope one day that we will return.

I first visited in 2011 and was pleased to be back. The hotel remains its clean and welcoming self. It is possible to get an inclusive deal for room and breakfast.
The comfortable cocktail bar remains under used
The breakfast is great and the tables kept topped up all morning.
There is luggage storeage for early arrivals and late flights etc.
Subway and bus routes are close.
And the hotel rooms are supplied with three door signs - the usual 'make up room', 'let me rest' plus an unusual third for the more adventurous 'please do disturb'

Room Tip: Didn't use the spa. This is Barcelona so there is street noise, rooms at the rear may be quiete...
