“Overrated, but unbeatable location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

From the tripadvisor reviews I expected a bit more.. however, the location is so good it pretty much makes up for it if you're not too picky.

Small, dated and worn rooms, but they are quite well cleaned and the bathroom was relatively new. My room was also quite hot/humid, but there is an air conditioner. Annoyingly, plug points hardly held the plug and there was no hair dryer (has to ask at reception for one..) Reception staff at were lovely though.

Wouldn't stay more than a couple of nights and definitely not for those who like to spend time in their rooms - only a place to sleep.

Service was at average level. rooms are very small. Cleaning at a good level.
Location is the best point for this hotel.
Considering the prices in Barcelona this is an excellent choice to the ones that pretend only a place to sleep.

We booked this hotel several months before our visit and got a very good price so where more than happy with everything! The room (200) was great, at the back of the building which meant it was very quiet, (some noise from air-conditioning units for neighbouring buildings if the window open) and no view from the window but we were not staying for the view and the window did not need to be left open with the rooms very good air-conditioning in use! Good beds, huge bathroom, everything clean and serviced every day. If I was being picky the room could have done with some 'voiles' or opaque curtains on the window so you could open the main curtains and not feel exposed! The hotel is easy to find (on the corner of the square and the Rambla, next to McDonalds!), and is central for everything. Reception staff are very helpful and full of tips and advice for getting around and very freindly. Breakfast is available close-by at the top of the Rambla and menu's are usually in several languages and include continental, traditional English, and American style offerings. Tip: Mcdonalds is great to get a good large cup of coffee to take out on the way back to the hotel room at night, also there are many cafe's selling ready made baguette sandwiches to take out too - we picked up a baguette and coffee most nights, for either a late night snack in our room or for a bench picnic on Catalunya Square! For much better value for meals explore the streets off the Rambla for great cafe's and restaurants. The farther from the Rambla you wander the cheaper the prices - this goes for souveniers as well! The Hotel Monegal is perfect for a few days in Barcelona, its a no frills 'Travelodge' category type - great basic amenities, clean and friendly with the bonus of being in the heart of the city. We plan to stay there again soon, highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel if you prefer a quiet nights sleep.

We had a really good stay at Medium Monegal. When we arrived the staff were at pains to warn us of the pickpockets in Barcelona (which I had noticed had been a problem for some of the guests in earlier reviews) they were very friendly and chatty and both spoke perfect English.

The rooms were a little disappointing, very very small, no carpet, two single beds rather than a double and the beds were not comfortable. Those are my only complaints about the hotel. I feel like if you are paying 180 euros a night for a place it should be a pretty nice room.

I guess this is made up for in the fact that you basically could not find a better location in the whole of Barcelona. The hotel is right on Place Catalunya at the top of La Rambla. It is a ten minute stroll down La Rambla to the Port, there is a metro just outside the front door of the Hotel which will take you basically anywhere in the city and La Boqueria is five minutes away if you don't want to take the breakfast option at the hotel. Also our room had an AMAZING view over Place Catalunya from the large windows which opened up onto a private balcony. It more than made up for the cramped conditions.

Also we arrived at 10:30AM and we were allowed to check in instantly. This is pretty unusual when it comes to hotels, usually they would make you wait until at least midday. This deserves mention, along with free Wifi! It seems so rare to come across free wifi in Europe that it always merits a mention!

Overall we really enjoyed our time in Barcelona and because of the amazing location and friendly staff I would have no problem staying here again.

Room Tip: I don't know if all the rooms come with a view, but ask for a view of Place Cataluyna, you won...

We arrived in Barcelona without a hotel reservation, after arriving at placa catalunya we started hunting for hotel the first hotel we entered was this, the reception lady was helpful and told us there was only 1 room available for 1 night only at 50 Euros it was excellent. we booked it. the room is basic two single bed joined together, very small the bathroom was tiny with a bathtub. the TV only had spanish channels.but it made for a good night sleep, the next day was checkout, after enquiring with the hotel staff we were offered a attic room with shared bathroom for around 120 euros for 2 nights. since everything else was booked we took it. the room was even smaller which we did not mind, because we had a place to sleep. and the bathroom was used only by another person in the adjoining room, so it was ok. the location is good, if you are looking for an inexpensive place just to sleep then this place is great. we were out most of the time. just used the hotel to sleep and bath.

Room Tip: ask for attic room if hotel is full.

Stayed in this hotel on the 24/09/13 for 2 nights. Very basic but if you aren't gonna be in the hotel then it's not a problem as its location at the top of the rambla is excellent, staff at the reception very helpful pointing out and highlighting points of interest on a map, McDonald's to the left Burger King to the right 4 those of you that don't like tapas like me. Subway station right out side take the red line to espanya to watch magic fountains you won't be disappointed purchase a t10 travel card for this (google 4 info on t10 card) also when travelling from airport to this hotel or any were near rambla, placa de catalunya take the aerobus from the airport, cost for me an my partner was €20 return every 5 mins superb if u land @ terminal 2 at the airport then you need A2 aerobus A1 for terminal 1 otherwise you are looking @ €60-€80 in a taxi from airport also right opposite hotel is the stop for the tour bus this is a must if you are in Barcelona such a big beautiful city. Finally would I stay @ his hotel again? For 2 - 3 nights absolutely any longer no would book something with a few more comforts. Hope this helps any one planning on going to Barcelona. Note don't worry about taking a stroll down the rambla just have your wits about you there is a lot more scarier places in England than the rambla.
