“Relaxed atmosphere, great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

A fantastic experience, with some great flavors and very friendly service. The space is small and intimate and the tapas just kept coming. I think we tried just about everything without a miss. I'd recommend this to anyone that loves the idea of great food in a cozy local bar atmosphere!

“Perfect meal and atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

This was the best place we ate in Barcelona, and we enjoyed the experience so much we ate here twice. The place is full of a lively crowd of young locals and really fills out after about 9.30, as with most places in Barcelona. The atmosphere is very friendly and the staff speak good English, although the whole experience left me wanting to learn Catalan and move here permanently!

Seating is at a long bar, and you can choose cold pintxos from the counter or order up some of the hot ones from the menu. There's also a menu of larger dishes (cazuelitas) which are about the right size for 2 sharing. The special cazuelita when we visited was pulpo a la gallega and it was absolutely delicious! The octopus was really nicely cooked and very well spiced. Other highlights were the spinach croquetas, grilled prawn and artichoke skewers with satay sauce, veal with chimichurri sauce and pork loin with mustard sauce. It's so hard to pick favourites though- every pintxo was so tasty and interesting, with a wide variety on the menu and seemingly a real effort made to go way beyond the standard tapas options.

There was also a good selection for vegetarians, particularly from the cold pintxos. You could really spend all evening here, passing your beer glass across the counter for refills and ordering as and when you want. With the prices from 1.70 to 2.90 per dish it's also perfectly possible to without breaking the bank.

“Perfect dinner experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

I went to this restaurant with a friend and cannot recommend it highly enough. We each had a glass of red, two glasses of cava and about 8 pintxos and it cost us 22 euro each! The pintxos were AMAZING - the best I have had in Spain. Couldn't believe how delicious each thing we tried was! We were served by the most delightful waiter and got free cava and truffles at the end.

“Best food we ate in Barcelona - simply fantastic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013 via mobile

If you love great food (the variety of both veggie AND non-veggie Tapas is something special) and want a slice of true Catalonian local atmosphere you need to make a trip to Gasterea. I have used tripadvisor for years but guiltily never get around to giving reviews myself. However, the quality of the fantastic food, service and atmosphere of Gasterea has got me to make the effort. Do not be put off by the narrowness of the establishment , get yourself a stool at the bar and wait for the fresh delicacies to come winging out from the kitchen so you are in prime position to get first dibs. My 14 year old loved it. With most Taps at €2 you can afford to be daring. Do it!

“Absolutely delicious! Great for English speakers and vegetarians”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

Travelled to Barcelona in July, as vegetarians sometimes struggled to find good quality food that wasn't just a main course minus the meat (ie: paella without meat).

This little tapas place was amazing, filled with locals but the bartenders/waiters spoke English and there was an English menu as well. Plenty of cold and hot options that weren't expensive (around €2 each) plus some delicious bigger dishes as well. Food was out quick, fresh and delicious, by far the best food we had in Barcelona.

Be aware that you might have to stand and lean against benches if the restaurant is full, but there will be plenty of food coming out to keep you entertained. Also don't feel pressured to move along after eating, we were told to relax and have a drink.

A definite must!
