This is Barcelona's most loved church, even surpassing the Sagrada Familia in the psyche of the city. It is also the finest example of Catalan gothic. This is a very different church to say French gothic, it is wide, the spans of the arches second only to Rome and it is sparse, the contents were burned years ago. As a result the pillars rise out of the gloom to then get almost lost again in the glorious heights of the ceiling. Any guide book will detail the history and notable features but this is not why you should go; it is just beautiful, one of the best in Europe.
