It is very nice hotel, just few minutes walk from Las Ramblas and La Boqueria, this same from the "Liceu" - metro station. The stuff is very nice and helpfull. There is very clean, rooms look nice. There is a terrace on the roof of the hotel.

My family and I stayed at the Principal the night before our cruise. The hotel is well situated near Las Ramblas. The rooms are large and were clean. Very nice bathroom. The beds were like most in Europe, extremely firm. That's the only downside. I like a little give to a mattress I sleep on. But like I said, that's what you usually find in Europe.
Check-in was quick and easy. The front desk person was helpful. He gave us good directions for places to see and a grat recommendation for dinner.
I would definitely stay there again.

We absolutely loved the hotel. Rooms were typical small European (ask for a room for three people even if you have only 2), close proximity to Las Ramblas and Metro, friendly and helpful staff (speak adequate English). The only issue was the hotel is about two blocks off the Ramblas and the road was not one I would want to travel alone at night. Don't get me wrong, nothing happened to me, it's just the feeling you get. This would not be the first choice for a hotel in the future, but it is fairly inexpensive and is in a nice touristy area of town.

Room Tip: Book a room for three people even if you have two. We had a much larger room with a couch and chair...

We stayed at the Hotel Principal in June 2013 for 3 nights. The location is excellent (just off La Rambla) with some nice little local cafes near too it. The standard and cleanliness is good too (akin to a Holiday Inn), however the service at Reception was really poor - not helpful. Good for a few nights, but don't expect great service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking onto the main street. Economy rooms usually look onto the back service areas...

At the beginning, I loved this place. The location is very nice - 2 minutes walk from La Rambla, 10 minutes from the Cathedral and other principal sights, the Liceu metro station is also nearby. You almost live in the Gothic Quarter, but it in fact it's El Raval which adjoins the Gothic Quarter. Can't say that this neigbourhood is for everyone, may be you'll prefer more spacious and bright streets of another quarters, it's up to you. The price was very reasonable as hotels in Barcelona in summertime are rather expensive.
Our room was spacious with additional bed (despite the fact that we booked a double room). I guess we were just lucky:) The Internet was really fast, the bathroom was spacious and clean. It was my first impression. Yeah, I had also noticed few ants on the floor but decided that it wasn't a big deal. Actually, it was.
I must confess, we were stupid enough to leave a pastry on the bedside table (there wasn't any frige), and this pastry attracted an army of ants! It was really big. Once, drinking my Coke I found pleasure in tasting one of them! So, my ants experience was a real disappointment. Even when we tried to reduce their quantity with a wet rag, they still stayed with us.
Few other moments - it turned out that the safe in the room was not free, may be it's a common practice but I've never faced it before; if a cleaning lady comes it doesn't mean she'll change your bed, sometimes our bed was covered with old rumpled sheets.
Except for that, I enjoyed our stay:)

Oh, and one nice thing from the staff. I'd accidentaly decided that we had to check-out before 12 PM, in fact it was 11 AM according to our booking info. They started to call us only around 12 PM and offered to give us 20 minutes more:)

Loved the location - was able to walk to get to the city bus tour, food, the market, etc. The room was very nice and clean. The guy at the front desk at 4:30am was very helpful in making sure our taxi got there on time.
