“Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We had a Twin/Double room. Quite small but enough for us. Usually there are no balconies in city hotels but here we had a small one - enough for couple of chairs. No small fridge (too bad!) so we put our drinks to the balcony. The bathroom was very nice and clean and had even a space-age shower. I'm not keen on tubs but for some curious reason they prefer those in some countries. A tray with walls would be much better and safer to be.
The room was quiet enough.
Breakfast was standard and same in every morning. Enough for me though.
The location is excellent. Just a few minutes to Rambla and the metro-station is just there too.

Only thing that was disturbing is the centrally regulated room-temperature. When we went there it was 19 degrees inside so we phoned to get more heat. Next day when we came to the room it was again 19. A phonecall again. And next day again. So I went to reception as a bit angry. They said they have to reset the system every day and after that the temperature goes to "normal" for every room. After this we didn't have to complain again. I suppose they had a small paper to remind them of keeping our room stable! MUCH better system would allow every guest to regulate their own room temperature. Of course they could always reset the room temp after guests have check-out. People are different and are satisfied in different temperatures. Also the nighttime temp is many times more convenient if it is lower.

Starting with the positive: the location of this hotel is perfect for a holiday visit. There are great bars and restaurants in the neighbourhood. You really should try the hidden away Granja M Viader in the street Carrer d'En Xucla numver 4 right behind the famous Mercat de la Boqueria. You will not regret any sandwich you order here. Very old place with no tourists! For a more modern feel with laid back music and GREAT cheese cake (and also great tapas and great wine and... oh I love barcelona) try bar Schilling in a side street of the Ramblas very close to the hotel (Carrer Ferran). Right, location is the positive thing about this hotel. Having said that: the rest of the hotel is NOT recommended. Unfriendly reception employee who seemed rather peeved off at having to do any work at all and demanded we pay up front for the entire stay. The room was small. Really small with a tiny bed (for 2!). The bathroom was clean, no comments there. But the airconditioning is centrally controlled and the room was freezing. After a small nap I had a splitting headache from the ice cold wind that was blowing in the direction of the bed (incidentely, it was not hot outside). There are 2 options: freeze to death or switch off the airconditioning. If we had not paid so much for this hotel, i might have been ok with the unfriendly service (a map was thrown at me after i requested one twice), the tiny cold room and having to pay (!) for a locker to store my luggage on arrival as my room was not ready. Sorry, i've stayed in way better hotels for a way cheaper price in exactly the same area. Never again.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back, facing the street behing the hotel. Many parties were held there at night...

Hotel principal is a great hotel for proximity to la rambla, liceu metro station and access to the rest of the city. We stayed in an economy room and it was clean with a nice bathroom and staff were polite. However, the bed wasn't that comfortable and we had no proper view outside our window, and you had to pay extra to use the safe and to leave lugage at the hotel. It was pretty perfect for sightseers but I wouldn't recommend for a special stay.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

We spent 2 weeks in Barcelona in September 2012 at Hotel Principal and enjoyed our stay immensely. The hotel is just 2 blocks walking distance from La Rambla and public transportation to all the interesting scenes you would love to see while in Barcelona. The hotel room was very comfortable, wifi access was available, beds were comfy, bathroom good and spacy .... no issues. The hotel rate was the best of any other 3 or 4 stars (and some 2 star) hotels in the area. The staff were efficient and friendly. Checkin-checkout went very smoothly. You have to pay for breakfast out of your pocket and that is ok since there are many small cafes just walking distance where one can get a quickly early a.m. bite.

We loved our big room with a big bed and balcony, #129. It was a warm welcome after the long flight from Seattle. The front desk staff, morning and night have been very helpful with extra stuff likes printing out maps and making a phone call to a local cooking school when the Internet was not working. Helped with working the drink machine, restaurant recommendations, etc. Very sweet service. Although breakfast comes with, we have only awakened in time once to enjoy the meal. Loved the granola, yogurt and the coffee / espresso machine delivers a delicious and powerful shot. Squeaky clean, great location for seeing many of the key sites.

Room Tip: We found it to be a very quiet street, so the balcony was lovely for reading and a breeze. Fresh air...
