“A haven in Barcelona”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

When travelling we like to stay in simple pleasant, clean rooms where the plumbing and air-conditioning work efficiently and quietly, the beds are comfortable, and the location is close to whatever we want to see or do. Hostal Oliva delivered 100% on all fronts and was a treat to stay in because it's run by a lovely, helpful and friendly woman, who keeps it very spruce and secure on the fourth floor of an interesting building in Passeig de Gracia. This fine boulevard leads down to the hub that is Placa Catalunya, and is an easy walk from where the aeroport A2 bus dropped us. Hostal Oliva's good location includes: two Gaudi buildings on the same street. The Antoni Tapies foundation and Godia galleries are just a few minutes walk away. Longer walks can take in Las Ramblas, the Palau Quel, the Barri Gotic old area, the wondrous Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelonetta beach, the marinas. The food at the Maritime Museum restaurant was reasonably priced and among the best we had in Barcelona, and the place was pleasantly cool and uncrowded. On the corner of P. de Gracia and Placa Catalunya, Apple Mac have a welcoming ground floor full of computing devices connected to the Internet, which can be used free for checking emails, etc., with friendly Mac staff on hand to help [I was so glad to have left my ancient, heavy laptop at home.] A taxi rank is almost outside the Oliva building. An open-topped tourist bus stops in Passieg de Gracia and will deliver you to the more distant galleries, museums, cathedrals, Olympic stadium, Quel Parc, etc. You can get on and off the buses which all day long do a circuit of the tourist attractions, but get up early to make the most of the one- or two-day ticket. Barcelona Sants railway station is a short taxi ride [if you have suitcases] or a bit of a walk away from Oliva or short a metro trip if you have time to work out the system [which is easy enough]. P.de Gracia metro station is very close to Hostal Oliva. And the Renfe overland train we then took to Bilbao to go to the Guggenheim gallery was an efficient and relaxing 5+ hour journey from coast to coast through some marvellous Spanish landscapes - a great way to travel between these two Spanish cities. I would willingly stay in Hostal Oliva anytime I go back to Barcelona.

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room but that did mean we got a room at the back of the building with only a dra...

We recently stayed in Hostal Oliva located on Passeig de Gracia in the L'Eixample neighborhood and it was indeed a great find in this very busy city. First off, let me start by advising that this hostal does not accept credit cards nor debit cards, cash only transactions. I will admit I was a bit concerned at first but after posting a couple of questions on this site and calling the hostal, I felt a little better about sending a deposit for our first night's stay via Western Union. Upon arrival, we met the hostal owner who is very kind, showed concern for our comfort and was informative about her lovely city. The hostal is located on the 4th floor of a very nice building with a beautiful antique elevator. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the owner who showed us to our room. Everything in the hostal was very clean and very tidy however furnishings were a bit outdated. The room did have A/C which was quiet and we were able to change the temperature setting to accommodate our preference. The bathroom is a bit small but everything was clean and functioned properly. I must say that the bed was uncomfortable but when traveling these are the things that I can overlook if all else falls into place. You do have to leave your key at the front desk but like the owner explained to me, she and another person are the only two with the keys and have the access to allow someone to come into the building from the outside. She also explained to me that we can come and go as we please as someone will be available to ring us into the building and give us our key to the room. I would highly recommend this hostal if you are looking for a few night's stay in Barcelona.

As written by other reviewers and I will emphasize again - this hostal is located at a fantastic location in heart of Barcelona. This is a hosTAL - not a hosTEL! I think this is important since we are not students and would not want to stay in dorm-like setting of hostel. The price is great for the location and it is for real - at first I was afraid thinking this would be dormitory hostel but I guess hostals are popular in Spain (small family run basic hotels).

There is no breakfast included but there are so many restaurants within blocks of this hostal that offers breakfast in all the price ranges, so you decide what you want. Also no coffee maker in the room but hostal has coffee vending machine available.

For the price, can not beat location. Close to metro station, shuttle stop to/from airport and for those who love to shop. The service is helpful and each time I wrote or called with questions, I received answers in timely manner. I have recommended this hostal and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Room with en-suite bathroom was good size and had air condition available.

Thank you so much for your opinion.

As you well specified in your opinion, in Spain you can find Hotels, Hostals and youth hostels.
A Hostal is just like a Hotel but smaller, and some of them could be in terms of service and rooms like a 2 or 3 star Hotel, but because of their size they can't.
Hostal Oliva is a familiar small Hotel located in the heart in Barcelona, fully reformed with a helpful staff. Our goal is to give the best experience to discover Barcelona.
We hope to see you again in Hostal Oliva.

Kind Regards,

Hostal Oliva

Hello,

I recently stayed in this hostal. The hostal is situated on a very good location, near plaza catalunya and on a very good street in Barcelona.

The staff are very friendly, and the room was very nice. (I stayed in a single room). There is an aircon available and it is working fine. The only thing was that I hear the neighbours aircon running when mine was switched off.

The hostal is a good value for its price and its location. Visitors in the room are not allowed, that is the only thing I appreciated less. Also you always need to ring the front door when you arrive. But they are always there to open the door.

Good stay, but visitors are not allowed.

Tom

I can't say enough about Hostal Oliva. The woman who owns it and works at the front desk is amazing. Helpful, kind, and concerned with your safety. I stayed for 5 nights in a room with shared bathroom and it was just what we needed. Not super roomy - but you aren't in Barcelona to stay in your room! Never had a problem with the washroom being busy. Everything was very clean and secure. Highly highly recommend. This hotel is in a perfect location - walking distance to just about everything that you want to see, but feels very safe at night to come home to. Perfection!

Room Tip: If you want to save money go with the shared bathroom rooms - fabulous value!

Its location is perfect. It is on the Passeig de Gracia in the heart of the posh shopping area (5th Avenue or Bond Street equivalent) and is just down the street from two of Gaudi's creations Casa Battlo and Casa Mila (La Pedera) (come out of Oliva and turn right and Casa Battlo is on your left after about a block and Casa Mila is a few more blocks up on your right). Take comfortable shoes to walk around Barcelona though!! Also, just underneath the Hostal is Tapas 24 which is a fabulous place to eat and is recommended in a few travel mags.

Hostal Oliva is really quaint. It is in a beautifully renovated building with an antique lift which is so much fun. The rooms are spotlessly clean and we were in a triple room, Room 3, which had its own private bathroom but the shared toilet was across the hall - still - added to the quaintness.

I would definitely return there and it was most certainly worth the money.

Hostal Oliva is located in Barcelona's best neighborhood - the lovely Passeig de Gracia, close to Plaza Catalunya. It is a fourth floor lodging in a lovely older building, entered by an open wrought iron elevator. Our room was large, airy and clean, with extremely modern toilet/shower facilities and large window to tiny patio outside. The proprietress showed us both hospitality and special kindness. The hotel and neighborhood are quiet, the metro is just outside, along with the widest walking boulevards and best tapas places! Connie and Dan, Oak Ridge NJ.

Room Tip: I viewed a room without bath which was much smaller.
