We went on an organised tour here. Once arriving at Montserrat by coach, you catch the cog train to the top of the mountain. To me, the most interesting feature was the cathedral. The monks still live here and you can sample some of the liqueurs that they make.

“Actually a morning trip to Montserrat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014 NEW

It's worth going to Montserrat just for the drive. The views are amazing although perhaps not for those with a fear of heights. The roads are winding with steep drops to the side. Listening to the boys choir in the church is simply lovely. Sample an huge selection of local cheeses. We bought a selection of cheeses which together with a bottle of wine made up our lunch for the day.

“Inspired space”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014 NEW

We took an afternoon trip up to this monastery. We were not able to here the choir as they were on summer vacation, but the ride up was amazing and the monastery and environs were definitely awe inspiring. Quite a nice introductory film, also

“Stunning Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014 NEW

My boyfriend and I were looking forward to this ever since we first started looking into going on holiday to Barcelona and it didn't disappoint.

A return ticket that included: the metro, the train to Montserrat, the cable car and the fernicular was just over €27. There were a couple of places to buy food when you got off the cable car or you could bring your own.

The train takes about and hour and then you wait to get on the bright yellow cable car and experience stunning views in a way you could only achieve in a cable car. It does get quite packed so you want to try to be at the front of the queue to get a good view. It is not for those with claustrophobia or a fear of heights.

The fernicular up the rest of the hill is a very pleasant ride. Be prepared to stand as there are only about 4 seats on the entire thing. Once out there are again stunning views and places to sit and eat both in and out of the shade.

I don't mind heights but I do mind edges so I walked some of the way further up the hill with my boyfriend but turned back long before the end. He continued up until he was on the top of the hill and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Under different circumstances I might have joined him but I wasn't feeling up to it that day.

Overall a pleasant day/half day depending on how early you arrive and how much time you spend hiking. It is possible to hike up the hill rather than get the fernicular.

“Amazing views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014 NEW

Give yourself plenty of time to experience this place...at least half a day. If you are in to hiking, there are plenty of trails to explore. Bring a light coat or sweater, even in summer. If it's a rainy or cloudy day, you won't get the breathtaking views. The basilica is beautiful and the ringing of the bells echoing around the mountains is a wonderful sound.
