“Good value for money,excellent position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

We stayed at Aparthotel Gutenberg for two nights from Fri 19th October until Sun 21st October, before our transatlantic cruise to Miami.I had choosen this hotel because it seemed value for money and its superb location and I must say we were very impressed with everything about it.
When you first approach it,it does seem quite shabby from the outside but once you step through the door you will be pleasantly surprised at the hotels boutique interior,it was welcoming and cosy, the staff on reception are very friendly and cant do enough to help you,our room wasnt ready when we arrived at one,so we went for a "Menu of the day" in the attached restaurant ,it was only 12 euros for starter, main ,pudd, beverage of your choice (alcoholic or non alcoholic) and coffee it was a welcome, tasty meal, very good value.
At two our room was ready and we went up in a tiny lift to a quite spacious but basic apartment,it even had a small balcony and included basic toiletries.
We had booked bed and breakfast, and this was also served in the attached restaurant,it is buffet style, not amazing but more than adequate the highlight for us was that you were served proper coffee that didnt come out of a machine hooray.
As we had large suitcases for our pending cruise we opted to leave these downstairs in a special luggage room behind reception which is kept locked they give you special tags so you just show these when you want to pick your cases up.
This hotel is in an excellant position, very close to Las Ramblas,Port and shopping centre,Hop on hop off bus pick up points and just round the corner to Drassanes metro station. For cruisers a taxi from the hotel to ship costs between 15 and 25 euros depending on how many passengers and cases.
All in all we had a lovely stay at this hotel and would most definately stay again, the staff are the friendliest we have ever encountered in Spain.
On a last note the Aparthotel Gutenberg and Hotel Gutenberg are one and the same.

We booked for four nights in November. The hotel is really easy to find right next to the Drassanes metro stop (end of the Ramblas) Great location for exploring the city. We found it overall to be great, the bed (double-hooray) to be very comfy and the cleaner came everyday with fresh towels.
The hotel is basic but for a great price and location we did expect too much...probably equivalent of Premier Inn/Travelodge in UK. Would recommend to those on a budget where location is key. We did not hear any external noise, but the toilets flushing in neighbouring rooms was a little scary on the 1st night but we acclimitised to it after one night. Would recommend!

Feels like a hostel really. Excellent and original design of the lobby and reception, liked it very much. Great central location, near the sea and just off Ramblas. Many designer small details. But is not cheap enought to balance the poor service. Major complaint is regarding dirty bed linen, with blood stains. Really never seen it before in any hotel. The kitchen (didn't ask for it, but got it) did not work, which I reported at the reception but nothing happened. But the bathroom is clean and contained all that I needed. Also got three single beds in the room, although needed only one.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for one night. For what we got it was expensive but the room was spotless, comfortable and we had a nice balcony. We were reasonably happy with the hotel until we checked out when the lady at the desk treated us though we were scum. She was rude, indifferent, dismissive. We left feeling we had greatly inconvenienced her by asking to pay our bill. Our experiences in Spain indicated that grace and charm when dealing with customers is not a strong point. Fair enough. I don't mind this and it has a lot else to offer, but gratuitous rudeness of this magnitude is a real put off.
Other negatives were gloomy reception area, difficult to locate, expensive.
Positives included good accommodation (albeit very sterile and charmless) and great location.

Room Tip: Appartment 751 has good, south facing balcony.

No real complaints really. The place was strange in a good way, with the car inside and the suitcases as decorative features etc. Room was clean, big and, and though my order (through hotels.com) was for one person, I got a room with three beds (!). And even a small kitchen, and a fairly large (and clean) bathroom with a shower.
Breakfast wasn't included in my order, but it was €7 for a buffet with eggs and bacon, bread, marmelade, yogurt etc.
It wasn't the easiest hotel to find, but when I first found it I didn't have any problems locating it again as it is just a few minutes walk off the lower end of Las Ramblas

Room Tip: Some rooms have balcony, not all (they tend to face the back and are close to the next building.

It was a nice experience. Although difficult to find. But, close to all attractions and tourist traps. Don't look at the entrance, go to the room. If you want stylish and overfurnished rooms, this is not your choise, but for clean and good comfort and bargain price, this is your choice.

Room Tip: Ask for balcony where you can look at the 'kids' climbing the wall
