“Decent hotel, served its purpose”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

In some countries, I'm not sure Hotel Derby would quite live up to its four stars, but all things considered, my friend and I found it to be a pleasant stay for our four nights in Barcelona.

Overall - it's clean and safe, beds were comfortable, and although it's not right in the centre, we got around just fine. The building is modern and the receptionists were friendly and helpful. Our twin room on the 5th floor was cool and relatively spacious. There was the added perk of a very small pool and sun deck you can use at the sister hotel across the street, and there were little things like a turn down service.

The biggest downside was as other have mentioned, the walls are pretty thin! In the mornings, we could hear what I presume was the cleaning staff moving around beds, closing drawers etc. Also, the wifi was a bit dodgy. There were also little things like our shower made an irritating screeching noise whenever we used it and a couple of (admittedly discreet) gentleman's clubs are in the area... but maybe that's just what Barcelona is like because it felt like a very safe area!

A note on transport - If you're coming in from the airport without much luggage, you can take the train to Barcelona Sants Station and walk about 15 minutes from there. I would probably hop in a taxi if you've got a heavier load. And, if it's already dark when you arrive, I'd suggest taking a taxi. There were some interesting characters on the main road from the station (i.e. a lot of people digging through bins) and as two girls, my friend and I discovered that the best metro to use at night was Hospital Clinic.

Overall: I'm not sure how much it would have ended up costing us per night, as we booked through a British Airways deal, but based one what I estimate we paid, I think it was a really good deal and for the right price, I'd happily recommend.

The hotel itself looks coolish and location is "not bad". But when you actually get to know to it, you will see why it's not worth those 4 stars.

1. walls and floors are made of paper, since you can hear basically everything around you. We woke up 3 nights in a row at 7.50 cause cleaning staff was so noisy moving beds and chairs. Also you could hear from upstairs whenever anyone was walking in a room with his shoes on. And in toilet its like a window was opened and all the chitchat kept coming into your room.

And you could hear EVERYTHING from the outside - there is a club and bunch of cafes out so you can hear people coming and going around 5am.. I mean we came back to hotel around 12am, and when your on holiday you expect to get some sleep..

2. we travel a lot and seen this and that at the receiption.. But hassling with passports, names and info at check in was just embarrassing for a 4 START hotel crew. Not to mention there was 1 a total dick (man), all cocky and full of himself. I mean we just came from Amsterdam that night and after 4 nights in 4 start hotel in Amsterdam this was just hilarious.

3. shower room ceiling was moving up and down whenever you opened the toilet door.

4. needs renovating

5. air conditioner didn't work like it supposed to work

6. on 4th day started to smell like smoke and before that you could smell that people smoke in the hotel.. I mean for a 4 start european hotel this is not how you get people to come back again..

Comparing to 2-3 star hotel this was exactly a 2-3 star hotel. Old and basic.

Room Tip: stay away from the middle in the corridors and get as high room as possible.

We spent two days at the Derby in June. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is located in the north west section of the city, a bit of a walk from the major attractions, but make no mistake there's plenty to see, do and eat in the area. This reasonably priced hotel is a safe bet.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Just come back from staying here for 5 nights with my wife and the experience was to be fair average. The hotel is located around 5/7 minute cab ride to the main area "Les Ramblas" which will cost you around 6/8 euros one way.

The rooms are of a decent size with basic bathroom amenities, they are however dated in appearance but to the cleaning staffs credit are of a decent standard.

Upon arrival, there was no one to assist us with our luggage into the reception then to our room. For a 4 star hotel, i thought this would have been the normal.
Furthermore our first night we were disturbed with a staff member bringing us a ironed shirt that she thought was ours, we notified her that it was not however they still tried to charge for this upon check out. To their credit, once we informed them of the case, they removed that charge.

Also on the last night our electricity went and when i called the reception I was asked whether the card was in, bit strange to be asking someone who has been staying here for the past 4 nights i thought. It took around 10 mins to resolve but no explanation or apology.

Each time you entered, left the hotel a general smile or acknowledgement I thought at a 4 star hotel would the norm, but not here.

All in all it’s like a Travelodge but a tad better. If you get a cracking deal like we did then i would stay here as the location is good.

Any questions - feel free to give me a shout.

I stayed in this hotel during April 2013 for 3 nights. Rooms are good (Not too small or big). Breakfast was kind of OK (Nothing great to talk about). The metro station is 15 minute walk from hotel (So if you are arriving with luggage, better take a taxi). there is a very good coffee place next door serving great Italian coffee with reasonable price. Staff was helpful. if you want to look around the city, the bus connectivity is good. Key street in Barcelona - Diagonal is just a mile away.I paid EUR 81 /night and it was worth the money.

This hotel was perfect for our visit to the moto GP . Rooms where great for people involved with outside activity. First night there was a bit of noise till about midnight from outside cafe's across the street. The next 3 nights there wasn't a problem , maybe it was that we had figured out how to close the outside screens, they were just a bit tricky if you had never seen them before. It looks like every apartment in Barcelona has them. The hotel is 10 to 15 minutes walk to estacio Barcelona Sants . There where lots of reasonably priced eateries nearby , we had breakfast around the corner at ( snack bar ) Torre del oro " see seperate review ". The beds were great , my friend said he hadn't been sleeping properly of late , he was asleep and snoring as soon as his head hit the pillow. Bathrooms were very clean and roomy . There never seemed like a wait for the lifts or we were lucky every day. Will definitely be back. Never walked to centre so couldn't tell you how long it was.

Room Tip: Sorry can not give any tips on this as we asked for a twin when we booked and got one.
