We were here on a family vacation and chose the Hotel Colon because it was next to the main cathedral in the Gothic Quarter and was also within walking distance of many major sights like Santa Maria del Mar, the Picasso Museum, Las Ramblas, Casa Guell and the Mercado. The hotel itself could use an update - the linens and decor are a little tired and the soundproofing is not great. Service is average, verging on poor. But, we had a great stay - after we changed our room to one further from (the very noisy) elevator and stairway. Our first morning we walked over to La Granja for a classic breakfast of churros and chocolate, and then we made our way through the Old Quarter. The second day we focused on Gaudi - walking up toward Casa Mila and La Pedrera and then over to the Sagrada Familia before taking a taxi over to Parque Guell. Many newer, more luxurious hotels have opened in Barcelona recently, but when I'm in Europe I'm there for the surroundings more than the lodgings - and the surroundings of Hotel Colon are hard to beat!
