Just got back from 3 days in Barcelona, staying at the Majestic. I usually stay in Crowne Plaza hotels which are rated 4* and I found the Majestic to be sadly lacking in the home comforts provided by lesser graded hotels, e.g. no tea/coffee making facilities in room and when I tried to order a coffee from room service, I was told it would take 20 mins!! Newspapers not available in lobby, although there was a machine (satellite kiosk) whereby you install your credit card and choose your newspaper. This puzzled me as having taken heed of the guidebooks, I stored my credit cards in my room safe, was I supposed to return to my room for my card, buy my paper, and then back to my room to store my card? Very cheap for a 5*. Breakfast was a hefty 24 euro each, so I was quite pleased to read about the complimentary coffee available in the hotel lobby for guests not wanting to take full american brekkie. That was until I read it was only available between 6 and 7am, after that you paid!!!! We did enjoy a meal in the restaurant of the hotel (not the Drolma - 48euro for soup!!!!) and the service was good, not a bad price either, coming to 73euro for two. Wonderful art in the lobby of the hotel and nice reception staff and concierge but it was the little things that were lacking - a kind of penny pinching type feeling which you don't expect when you are paying 200 euro a night. All in all, I did enjoy Barcelona and the Majestic does have a prime location but I did expect more from a 5* and would definetly take a chance on booking a less expensive hotel now that I have visited this lovely city.
