“Don't go there- very Bad experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2011

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Pelai 1 - City Park in Barcelona between 3-6 of July 2011.
Throughout the four days we stayed in this hotel we didn’t have any hot water to shower.
We asked the reception several times to take care of the problem but we came across Bad and indifference Attitude and abusive comments, aimed mainly to buy time until our check out.
The room we stayed at was very very small, with a small window that can't be opened and the air conditioning is weak. The hotel is in good location for those who like to be in the most visited areas in Barcelona.
We paid 72 € per night - not worth the money.

The hotel is located in a perfect spot for visiting Barcelona. Friendly personnel, great room and although in a very busy location, well isolated and quiet. Subway just 5m from the entrance and bus stops near, we were able to visit every part of the city easily. Its a perfect city hotel, yes without extra facilities, but when you come for a city visit and spend mainly the night in the hotel its more than excellent. Room perfectly cleaned and tidy everyday and the bathroom was from a class of more stars.

Hotel not bad and location very good. Robbed while checking in at front desk. Band of 3 professional thieves came into lobby. 2 distracted us, while a 3rd stole my backpack from in front of my feet. Lost camera, computer, ipod, sunglasses and Eurail passes. Thousands of dollars lost. Hotel only said this happens all the time in Barcelona. (Police confirmed that.) They had a security camera over check in desk but they don't record anything. Manager said they are not responsible for any of the losses. Check in gal said, "you have insurance don't you?" (Yeah, made me wonder who was in on it??) Only help they gave was a map to the police station and printing some documents for me. Get over all that and it was OK...but kinda hard to do.

This hotel is in an excellent location, aprox 150m from Placa de Catalunya with excellent transport links to the airport (via Aerobus) and around town using the excellent Metro system (there is a stop about 10m from the front door of the hotel.

The staff are friendly and the hotel is clean and well maintained. Only issue I had with this hotel is that the rooms were very small. But for the price and location I can't complain.

Breakfasts were a continental buffet. There was plenty of choice of meat, cheese, bread, pastries, cerials. Overall an excellent stay.

With no other hotels in Barcelona to compare, I can only say what you get in HLG Citypark is acceptable, if you are ready for a budget experience. I would be more happy if the price was lower - initially I booked for 56EUR per night which I recon would be a fair price, but I had to change the dates though and the price went up to 76EUR per night. Breakfast was included, but given the fact that the coffee was simply disgusting and the choice quite poor, plus, just a few steps outside the hotel there was a choice of coffee shops where you could get crossaint and espresso for 1,60EUR...I would re-consider the need to book a room with a breakfast anywhere in Barcelona. Just FYI, the hotels usually charge around 12EUR for the breakfast. In any coffee shop, you can get the same amount of food (e.g. a sandwich, of english breakfast set) for around 5EUR with a coffee. On the same street there are many more hotels, so if you are considering HLG because of the location, there is much more to choose from.
Otherwise, the staff was friendly, the room small but quite clean, the sleep was undisturbed by any major noise (room 410) but on extremely flat pillows (just fold them in half)... the location was good, but if I was to choose again I would look for something in Bari Gothic area, much more charm out there.

We stayed in the hotel for 4 nights in Nov 2010. Had visited Barcelona before and stayed in a hotel 3 doors down, so wanted same location. It is a 2 minute walk from Placa de Catalunya, where the airport bus stops. The staff at checkin are very friendly and helped us with any questions about the city. Our room was on the 2nd floor and situated on the corner of the hotel. Some people may find it a bit small, but for us it was perfect as we were out all day sightseeing. The bed was comfortable, ample storage space, air conditioning, and there was also a TV and safe in the room. We found the fridge in the room a blessing for keeping bottles of water and snacks in. The bathroom was a good size, with a bath and shower, and it was spotlessly clean. Breakfast at the hotel was continental. There was a good selection of cereal, bread & delicious pastries as well as cheese, meats, yoghurt, fruit, etc. Dining area small and basic, but there was plenty of food for an ample breakfast. I would definitely stay in the hotel again. The location is perfect - 5 min walk from top of Las Ramblas, and it is much cheaper than many hotels in the vicinity. I would rate it as a good 3 star hotel.

We recently spent a weekend at this hotel. The location was very good - close to the Unversity and La Rambla. The cost was very reasonable making this a good value. There were a number of inexpensive locations for breakfast nearby. However, the rooms were very small and there was a good amount of street noise so that should be taken into consideration for those who might be bothered by that. Also Internet is only available in the lobby.
