“Noisy plain hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Stayed here for business. Did not get any sleep first night due to the noise from other rooms. The following nights I used ear plugs.
The TV was only able to receive international channels 50% of the time. The rest of the time it just displayed "no signal".
The window of the room faced a wall, you could not see the street nor the sky.
The receptionist required the VAT registration number of my company to allow me to pay the room (?!), not really sure what that was about, first time I ever experienced this. After a couple of minutes on the Internet I was able to find it and allowed to pay the bill, but if you are in a hurry you might want to have it ready for the checkout.

If you don't mind a hotel which is a bit frayed at the edges, the carpeting is dirty and shows numerous spots (of what?), the decor in the room and the hallways is a bit, no VERY tired, and the walls have been made up of papier maché, this is your chance. If you get inspired by neighbours 4, 5, 6 schoolkids singing funny tributes to their friends on Skype at the top of their voices (at 3. a.m.) across the corridor from my room, this THE place to be. Thank God, I didn't spend any time in this hotel. And you know what the strangest thing is? I would book it again, if I knew I would be out most of the time. Why?
Location, location, location. Close to Ramblas, in a nice neighbourhood which has everything. Reception is fine and efficient, the room-size (mine was 307) generous and you'll find everything you need in your room. Including that most elusive of species: a minibar, although not wonderfully well-stocked. Perhaps there are less noisy rooms. This was easily the noisiest hotel I've ever been in. You could easily chip in to conversations of your neighbours, even if they weren't that loud...
I am sorry I can't report on the bar (in the lobby), the restaurant or the swimming pool. Too much work outside the hotel - thankfully. Yet, I'd book this hotel without batting an eyelid. It's what you find most important: location with OK comfort versus a bit of noise and bad decor. It has a good price/quality ratio. Just bring your state of the art headphones!

Room Tip: My floor (3) was very noisy. Perhaps there are refurbished floors with more soundproofing.

Although Silken are building themselves as an upmarket brand, the quality of its hotels in Spain varies greatly. This is the fourth Silken I am reviewing (undisputed best is the Puerta America in Madrid) and this one is clearly edging towards "only average". The location is good, but still too close to the Ramblas, which explains the noise outside in the late / early hours. The outside noise is actually competing with the air conditioning to prevent you from getting a decent night's sleep. Decor and fittings are sober and ok, but nothing outstanding. The double bed was actually twin-as-double, and not of the best quality. Poor provision in the minibar (small soft drinks bottles, no smart drinks). Cleanliness average as well (the infamous hair in the bathtub). Front desk was friendly and reasonably helpful. Free (and reliable) wireless.

close to shops , gothic quater many great restaurants, also convenient for the aerobus to and from the airport.
found our room very dark, tired but a nice size. we went to the terrace once. pool tiny, loungers all occupied. also terrible music blaring.
the hotel felt lifeless. wifi was poor as had to keep sighning in. also poor signal.
hotel staff not the happiest of people, dont think it cuts it as a four star hotel, however we had a fantastic break as we had an ace location to explore. expected more from this hotel. on the plus though was not noisy!!!
beach is about a 15/20 minute walk.

This hotel was wonderful, just off Las ramblas which was amazing. Close to port vell, barceloneta and the Gothic quarter. The front service were helpful and friendly. The rooms were a nice size, clean and comfortable. The hallways were a little messy bit not too bad. It also had a wonderful roof top pull area and bar where you could soak up the Spanish sun! Had the best time and would stay there again!

The location is great. It is just a block away from Las Ramblas, which has all kinds of shopping and restaurants (many staffed with English speakers). Nearby there were American restaurants like McDonalds and Hard Rock Cafe along with lots of more local Spanish food, There is plenty to see and do nearby if you want to explore on foot, but it's also easy to find a bus or taxi. Barcelona seems like a great city for pedestrians.
The room was clean and modern. The staff were very helpful and most of them spoke good English. They pointed us in the direction of good shops and restaurants. Our baggage arrived late from the airline and so the hotel staff provided us with an electric outlet converter and several necessities to borrow until it arrived. They also called us a taxi on our way out.
The only negative is that it is in the middle of an urban area, so it can be loud outside at night.
