One of two fine dining restaurants that we visited during our stay in Barcelona. The other was Con Gracia. Now, this is up for debate because I think Con Gracia was the better of the two, but my boyfriend thought Montiel took the edge - in terms of food! Montiel is quite exceptional in it's own right. The food is brilliant. Montiel is light and bright, I'd be happy going here with a few friends or family - Con Gracia is better for a romantic meal in my opinion. Montiel is quite a small restaurant, feeling quite intimate, and the dining experience lasts a couple of hours. There are 2 menus to choose from, the 'traditional' or the 'gastranomical'. We opted for the traditional menu because there were more dishes that appealed to both of us (as was also the case with Con Gracia, the two of us were asked to select the same menu so that the best service possible could be provided), it was also 15 euros cheaper per person. I also opted for the wine pairing with each dish (approx half a glass served with every course), for an extra 30 euros, all of which were very good. I did end up rather drunk, because it's not usual for me to drink as quickly as I eat. Although it is lovely to do, personally I think I'd steer clear of that if I did it again. The couple behind appeared to experience a similar 'problem'! The staff at Montiel were incredibly good. They knew their stuff and were very happy to adapt the menu to cater for my wheat and shell-fish intolerance. I had written an email ahead of time notifying them of dietary restrictions, which they acknowledged when we arrived and followed through on brilliantly. One bit of advice I'd give to Montiel is to upgrade their air-con. Our waiter was very good to advise us where to sit (as with Con Gracia, we were able to choose our table), however it still became very warm and we saw that other diners felt that it was the case too. Overall, a lovely restaurant for a treat!
