“Sit back and be "wowed"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

There are 2 tasting menus available. Selection depends on the market that day. The quality of the food was exceptional, a very memorable dinner. Make reservations, and be prepared to spend some money. This place is not inexpensive, but it sure is good. We had mostly fish with some pork. They offer wine pairings with the tasting menu, or order what you like to drink from the excellent wine list that features many quality local wines. The restaurant is located on a small side street in the Ribera area.

“Attentive Service and Very Good Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We booked Montiel on the basis of other Trip Advisor reviews for my birthday meal and we both enjoy sampling taster menus, especially with wine pairings.

The first thing that struck us even before the first dish was delivered to our table was the enthusiasm and knowledge of our waiter. When the staff have such clear confidence in the food they are serving it is a good sign for the meal to come.

The taster menu was very good but it was not outstanding, none of the courses had the wow factor that we have experienced in other establishments that said the food was consistent throughout and it was still a very good meal and good value for money.

The waiters singing happy birthday to me topped off the evening and we left satisfied and happy.

We would definitely recommend Montiel to others and, should we visit Barcelona again, we would happily dine here once more.

“Loved the reviews - then went there!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We were so excited about both the reviews on TA and on reading their own website – fresh daily produce prepared and cooked under chef’s directions and only a choice of 2 menus; the contents of which you have no knowledge of until you arrive – what could be more exciting?!
From this you can gather we were looking forward to this one! And …. It started out so well. The tomato toasted bread was simple yet excellent. The ‘small mountain’ of vegetable couscous with confit of garlic surrounded by cream of grilled leeks that followed was superb as was the capaccio of scallops (although way too much height in the rocket ‘tower’ whose flavour threated to overwhelm the taste of each mouthful of the wonderful seafood.
This is where it started to go wrong. At this time we were speed eating – at this rate we’d be out in an hour and that was despite having the tasting wines which meant a longish description of each accompanying wine with each course.
We hadn’t been told they wanted to ‘turn’ the table when we made our booking and, anyway, there were 18 covers empty – what was going on?
In an attempt to slow things down a bit my wife went to the toilet immediately after the scallops. She passed our waiter heading in the opposite direction with two plates of what might well have been our next course but couldn’t be as we’d only just put down our cutlery from the last course – wrong!! The dishes arrived at our table and the waiter put them down and said to me that he’d return to explain the dish when my wife returned. This didn’t look good – firstly the next dish was fillet of sea bass, needing gentle cooking and precise timing, and, secondly, you could roast an ox from the heat emanating from the plates. My wife returned, we listened to the explanation of wine and food, and still had to wait for the dish to cool down sufficiently to ‘enjoy’ – needless to say the fish was ‘somewhat’ overcooked. We told the waiter who, to his credit, offered to ask chef to cook it again but, surprisingly, the moment had passed. We asked for everything to be slowed down a bit and it was interesting to note that following this the table of two local businessmen asked for the same treatment!
BTW – the wine selection was poor and ill-fitting to the dishes – another disappointment.
Yes, this place could have prospects but, for now, it rates as a somewhat amateur attempt to ‘play in a league’ beyond the present team’s capability.

“Keep Calm and Enjoy Montiel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Montiel is a Gem at the Barrio Gotico of Barcelona. If you are a gourmet, don't miss the experience. Is my favorite Restaurante in the City that I visit every year. You can order "a la carte" or surrender to the astonish menu that they offer. You will need at least 2 hours to enjoy the experience at Montiel, where Marcos and his troupe will take care of you. I recommend to make a reservation.

“Great evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

The food is very good, but what made the dinner so fantastic was the warm and thoughtful service. We mistakenly had a reservation for the following night, but the host (I forget his name, but I know that he plays a lot of football when not working) was so gracious and accomodating that it did not matter. He was also very engaging and his positive attitude made the evening more of an experience that just a meal. And though the service is what really stood out for us, the food was also expertly prepared and very tasty.
