I spent three nights over a long weekend at the Chic and Basic Bruc Apartment with a good girlfriend of mine. We wanted somewhere central to stay, but not too noisy, somewhere not too expensive as we would be exploring the City for most of the day and during the evenings. After initially admiring the 'Chic and Basic' concept and finding the website easy to use, and the correspondance with the company easy to book our stay we felt positive that our stay would be enjoyable. However, we found the apartment, although conveniently located, in a poor state of cleanliness and in a noisy location due to building works being carried in the apartment above.
We arrived late at night, and after collecting our keys from the Chic and Basic Hotel, made our way to find our apartment. On entering the building, we found it difficult to locate our apartment due to the lack of signage. After hiking up and down the stairs in the building with our suitcases several times, trying to find the entrance, we eventually locted the apartment, and found the apartment in a below average state of cleanliness, and a stale, musty smell.
The check-out clean had clearly been rushed and there were things that hadn't been done such as the dishwasher not being set off, so it was full of dirty plates, crockery and cutlery. There were no instructions left for the usage of the safe, so we were unable to leave valuables in our apartment safely, and with Barcelona's reputation for a high crime rate, we thought this was particularly poor. The surfaces hadn't been dusted and the television didn't work at all.
It was however, useful to have a bathroom each in the apartments, especially being girls! There was enough space without feeling cramped and on top of each other. It served a purpose as a base for the weekend, but the cleanliness let it down, as did the noise from drills and hammers at 8am on the Saturday morning, which came from the apartment above. On asking one of the receptionists to provide us with an address for a tapas restaurant we wanted to locate, we were given an entirely wrong address and sent to a random Japanese restaurant on the other side of the City - not entirely helpful! However, we were kindly warned of the dangers of travelling as females through the old town with our suitcases, and advised particularly to watch our handbags because of the presence of pick pockets in Barcelona - which in fairness tainted our holiday and general feel of the City far more than the disappointment of the standard of cleanliness the apartment.
