“Fantastic stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Ok so after reading some of the reviews on here I got a bit worried about what we would find on checking in.... I shouldn't have worried as we had a fantastic 2 night stay here. (although I will add that if we had been in one of the lower level rooms we may not have had such a great time).

We got a great deal on a mode city view room (think these have now been called the level rooms as the hotel rebranded from ME Barcelona to Melia Barcelona Sky 2 days before our arrival!) and we were on the 27th floor with the most fantastic views across the city with torre agbar and sagrada familia in sight. Loved the floor to ceiling window (be warned if you don't like heights then you might not like the windows quite so much!)

The room was a little tired around the edges but to be honest unless you stay in a hotel that has just opened they are all going to have some wear and tear and the minor scuff marks on the white floors didn't detract from the room which was also bigger feeling than expected. Our room was tucked behind the lifts but there was no noise from them to be heard in the room (and only 6 rooms on our floor so not a high volume of people either)

As others have said the bathroom has a large window by the sink overlooking the bedroom and the shower and toilet are in separate "cupboards" sectioned off with sliding doors. Fine if you are with someone you know well, maybe not so great for mates sharing a room!

We didn't really notice a problem with smell that some reviews have mentioned (yes the surrounding streets can sometimes smell like drains, but we didn't find this an issue in the hotel for our stay).

We had a quick look at the spa area but didn't use it in the end as it was 20 euros per person per day to use the steam room/Jacuzzi/sauna.

Check in was quick and efficient although we did later have to go back and ask about times for breakfast (included on our deal) and about check out times (we were able to have a later check out of 1pm at no extra cost and hotel looked after bags in a safe area for us after check out as we had a night flight home)

We had just got to our room when housekeeping appeared with complimentary bottles of water and a snack for us which was a nice touch. In the evenings when we returned to our room the curtains had been drawn, lights set to low and a little lolly left on each side of the bed, again a nice touch.

Breakfast was plentiful and tasty - everything from bacon, sausage, egg, cereal, yogurt, meats, cheese, fresh bread. croissants, pastries to chocolate cake! Word of warning though, like most of Europe they just don't get my obsession with tea!! I asked for some and was served an English breakfast tea which tasted slightly odd and on closer inspection at the packaging I saw it had lychee extract in it! odd! Never mind, just meant I switched to coffee the next day.

The pool bar was shut during our stay (being refurbished) but the pool areas itself was open. While too cold to swim, there were a few other people taking advantage of the sunshine with us using the loungers/cabanas. Towels are provided. For the size of the hotel it is not a huge area so may get very busy in the summer. It is on the 6th floor and has quite high walls which although mean you don't really get a view, it does keep some of the wind out - it was very breezy during our stay!

The hotel itself can be quite dark in the reception area and bar and as others have mentioned there is a lot of metal/mirrors on the walls everywhere. Didn't really mind it ourselves.

One of the best aspects of our stay had to be the Level lounge on the 25th floor. This is a private lounge that certain rooms have access to (and the staff will check!) and has an area with tv/wii, computer with internet connection (wifi was free in our room and throughout the hotel), various papers/magazines (in Spanish), and a lounge area with a free bar and free snacks/tapas throughout the day. The two girls working here throughout our stay were lovely and friendly and a real credit to the hotel. They also helped us find out train times back to the airport and gave us info on the free museum night in Barcelona.

Location wise it is a little out of the way but easily accessible by metro and tram. (nearest metro poblenou and nearest tram pere IV) About a 3-4 min walk to the metro. Buy a T-10 card at the airport (more than one person can use it at a time, you just validate it as many times as you have people on the way in) and this will get you to the hotel using just one journey on the card. The area itself is still undergoing regeneration and there are some building works half finished nearby (no work going on when we were there) but it felt safe walking around, just not as busy as the main tourist areas. The Ramblas of poblenou (3-4 mins from hotel, turn left as you exit the hotel and keep going straight till you see the ramblas cutting across that road) is lovely to walk down in the evening, plenty of restaurants and cafes too and a great ice cream place El Tio Che (if near Barceloneta beach also try Dinos for ice cream). You can walk all the way down to the beach here (about 10 mins stroll).

Fab stay, would definitely return and recommend staying in one of the level rooms as the service we received was fantastic.

Room Tip: One of the level rooms, city view is great at night to see Barcelona all lit up.

Ok the hotel is not what I was expecting after seeing all the funky pictures!!

First, the shower door was broken (looks like others had the same problem reading some of the reviews below). The shower/bathroom area is separated from the main room by a see through glass, this may be nice if you are on a romantic holiday, not so romantic if you are out with the lads!!

The shower itself was virtually useless. It had a very “and I really mean very” large shower head which made the flow of water very weak.

Now to the biggest problem, when you book a twin room, you would expect 2 physical separate beds right? Wrong! You actually get one double bed that is split up in half. Basically you get a tiny single bed that is almost impossible to separate away from the other bed.

The corridors/external room doors were plain stainless steel from top to bottom which gave the hotel a “prisony” feel. There was also bad smell in the area which spilt into the hotel. I can’t see why the hotel couldn’t use some good air fresheners to get rid of it.

Although the reception staff were very friendly and welcoming, the reception area is dark and uninviting, definitely not what you would expect from a hotel advertising themselves as 4.5 or 5 star!!

Breakfast was way too expensive (22 Euros per person per day) so we never tried it.

Despite all the negatives above, I would still say it is an ok hotel and I would probably stay again (considering the W Hotel was more than twice the price) and the Me hotel was a short walk away from Metro and Tram stations, a large supermarket, a Subway and a Burger King!!

Friends and I went to stay in Barcelona for 3 nights arriving 5th May. On our arrival the first impression of what was advertised as a 5* hotel, was quite sad. Reception area totally uninviting and not that of one rated 5*. The first greeting was a smell of what can only be described as a dirty dish cloth. This smell continued into the elevator and then into our room, which had silver fish in the bathroom. Nice!
The link for the hotel described rooms as having tea and coffee facilities, bath robes and so on. On inspection our room had none of these. I asked reception why I had no coffee and tea facilities and was promptly told that this was only applicable to certain rooms. However, if I wished to have them, I could at a charge. Once expressing my dismay, and the condition of my room I was given the facility. The hotel is not handy for the city centre, so we had to result in catching taxi's to and thro. All in all loved city. Hated hotel. Wont be going back. Reminded me of a Madams Boudoir.

Really enjoyed our stay at the ME Hotel in Barcelona, when we first arrived the room we were given had a broken shower door so we immediately phoned reception and were given a different room, this was followed up by a complimentary room service 'snack'. The breakfast was great, only thing however on the Friday the breakfast was downstairs which was a really nice space, however next couple of days (Sat and Sun) we had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, where the tables were really close together and everyone did seem a bit bunched up together. The waiters were a bit too keen on clearing the tables, which did mean on a few occasions I had to get more cutlery. As an overview, the hotel is very cool, the staff very helpful, the rooms more than adequate and really clean, although the hotel is a little way out, 5 minutes takes you to the metro. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you.

We chose to stay here after viewing the website & thinking it would be a funky pad to hang in after seeing the sites of Barcelona, oh how we were wrong! The staff make you feel uncomfortable, the pictures on the website are totally misleading... They say they have a pool bar (have a look at the website I admit it looks amazing) where are the loungers? The bar? The towels? All the cabanas are bare & there are no food or drink services or staff at all!! Also don't bother ordering room service unless you are in the mood for the French classic steak tartare, then why not order the hamburger!! That's right it was totally raw! The wifi is intermittent at best but everytime you leave your room you need to sign back in wich takes a good 3-5 minutes that is if you can get a signal at all. The common areas are well appointed as are the rooms but I believe they have focused on quantity over quality. It smells like a bad yeast infection & on closer inspection it is filthy!!! Why bother having white laminate floors if you aren't able to keep them clean?? Another worrying feature is the cracks in the double glazed window panes... It kind of makes you wonder if the hotel was built on
a fault line. The hotel is nowhere near the city centre & the hotel nightclub is also
nonexistent (angels&kings) the bassist of fallout boy is said to own it but perhaps he has had
a fallout with the hotel? In overview stay here if you want style over substance & a dull soul-less environment

Over the long weekend, we enjoyed staying in this hotel. Very good value for money: nice room (the layout of the rooms is really unique), an outside pool to enjoy the sun on a matrass after long day of walking, very good bartender, making great mojitos. The location is good - to reach the main attractions you go 3-4 stops with the metro. Do try small restaurants nearby in the Rambla of Barceloneta, where differently from Rambla you see locals.
One minor thing - there could be more people serving in the reception, as there was a big cue to check out.

Room Tip: Next I would take a room with a sea view.

I stayed at the ME in Barcelona for a conference recently. I have stayed in many hotels in the area and there is no doubt this is a really nice one however I do think it might be trying to be a little too cool. The rooms were nice but room service was appalling - I had to call 3 times before finally getting a pretty basic order. The bar is nice and the breakfast is definitely worth staying for. Absolutely lots of choice and really good food. I will definitely go back and try it again as I am not sure I saw it at its best!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view - high floor
