On a recent holiday to Barcelona most days I enjoyed espressos at the local cafes. However because I can only drink soya milk I thought wouldn't it be nice to have a lovely frothy latte from Starbucks where I "knew" I could be guaranteed freshness and a smile. How wrong I was. Near the hotel on the corner of carrer de pu claris and Ronda Sant Pere 17 stood a Starbucks. We went in expecting to see a smiley face. First thing we didn't get. Anyway not to be put off I ordered my coffee, a tea, and a croissant with jam. I was told they didn't do jam. Bit of a language problem went on as I didn't want the croissant if there was no jam. It all got a bit frustrating and the outcome was I walked away from the counter with 2 drinks and a carrot cake. We managed to find some seats which was good as it was a busy place. My carrot cake was completely stale and dry as a bone. I asked my husband to take the cake back and swap it for a muffin as the thought of trying to talk to the assistants again I didn't fancy. I put it down to a language barrier but in hind sight they were just plain rude. My husband joined the back of the queue around 8 deep and placed the cake on top of the counter so the assistant could quite clearly see there was a problem with the cake. Minutes passed and his drink was going cold. He tried a few times to get the attention of the assistant but was told very rudely to wait as he had others to serve first. Eventually I approached the counter and tried to point out we just wanted to swap the cake as it was stale. I asked for a manager but all over a sudden all the serving staff no longer spoke any English. And so it went on until everyone was served before they would change the stale cake for a muffin. We received no refund on the differences, no apology. Even other people on the queue tried to explain to the staff in Spanish about the cake. I’m not joking but surely this has got to be the WORST Starbucks in the WORLD. Added to that I think the muffin was a bit stale as well as I ended up with a rotten stomach for most of the morning. Also they charge an extra 40 cents for soya milk on top of the cost of the latte which I've never been charged before in other coffee chains.
