Went here with my girlfriend on a lazy Sunday afternoon as we were both craving for Eggs Benedict. The decor of the place was pretty cool, with big windows providing an abundance of natural light. We both ordered Eggs Benedict and a single portion of Pancakes with seasonal fruits and Maple Syrup. My girlfriend ordered Chocolate Latte as a drink and I got the Mimosa.
First to arrive were the drinks, my Mimosa was made from pineapple juice (should be orange juice unless stated otherwise) but really refreshing, my girlfriends Chocolate Latte was hot chocolate with whipped cream, a little disappointed that there was no coffee but latte means milk in Italian so it is up for interpretation, it was very good nonetheless.
The eggs Benedict were delicious, with the eggs being perfectly cooked, the toast they sat upon were a little over cooked, which was a pity but did not detract too much from the eggs. They were accompanied with French fries (would of preferred bravas or wedges as other places offer, but again personal preference) and a side salad (which consisted of just lettuce leaves). Fries were tasty and crisp, the salad was bland and had no dressing whatsoever, but overall it was a tasty brunch.
I am a fast eater and almost always finish before my girlfriend; just as I swallowed my last lettuce leaf did my significant other spot the green insect on the salad. Now this part is always tricky, both my gf and I have worked in service before and know that a scene is really stressful, so we tactfully told the waitress when she came round. She said nothing, I mean not a word, took the leaf with the moving insect (it was alive btw, which means no vinegar or iodine was used to clean the lettuce).
Next up were the pancakes, very fluffy and light, the hard part done right. The seasonal fruits were strawberries and sliced oranges, and they were fresh and juicy, great. The maple syrup however, was honey, not the crystallised expensive honey, but the cheap squeeze bottle kind. I like honey, but I was told I was getting Maple Syrup, so meh, it annoyed me a bit.
When we asked for the bill we had expectations, I mean we have both worked in service before, albeit not in BCN. I figured they would discretely give a discount (to reflect our discrete mentioning of the insect). Maybe I was expecting too much, they clearly thought so when they overcharged us by €1.75.
They stated my girlfriends drink was €4.75 when it was clearly marked €3, again having worked in service we gave the benefit of the doubt, so we went to the cashier desk to pay and query the price. The Manageress stated that we had clearly ordered the shake and not the chocolate latte, at this point we lost our temper, not only was there no such drink on the Brunch menu, we were also accused of trying to cheat the bill... AFTER FINDING A LIVE INSECT AND BEING SUPER COOL ABOUT IT.
We asked for the complaints book (for those who don´t know, all shops are legally required to stock these books, which are check by a government group randomly). The manageress asked incredulously if we were serious, I couldn’t personally believe her balls. We informed we were and she tried to tell us that she didn´t have a book, we informed she legally obliged and would report the shop if she didn't fetch it post haste. She then asked us that if she wanted her to call the shop owner because she didn't know where the book was? I told her to do what she had to get the book otherwise we would report the shop for denying us (much worse offence than a complaint). She rang the owner and came back with €8.5 (price of the Eggs Benedict) and asked would we prefer that than filling out all the papers, we said we would and thanked them.
The bill (before partial refund):
€8.75 x2 for Eggs Benedict
€7.5 for the pancakes with seasonal fruits
€5 for Mimosa
€3 for chocolate latte
I really didn't want to give this place a bad score but I don't think I could justify "fair". We weren't treated fairly; I felt we were as patient as possible, but defensive attack because they overcharged us when it was clearly their mistake was just too much. Decent food but they don't wash their salads, they don't take responsibility, they make mistakes, they are unaware of what a Mimosa is and they don't know the difference between honey and maple syrup.

Firstly, let me say thank you for coming to Dostrece, we most certainly appreciate your business. I have reprimanded the waitress and she has left our establishment. Your are correct she should have been more attentive when you brought to her attention the insect in your salad. To be fair i must say we do use a industrial salad spinner to wash our produce however insects are very small and once in a while one gets thorough the cleaning process, but rest assure that our produce is rinsed and then dried from excess water before being served to a client. Nonetheless the waitress should have apologized, let me take this opportunity to do just that from all of us here at Dostrece.
You are correct again on the second point of the Complaint Sheet that we are obliged by law to provide to our paying customers. Again another point why this waitress is no longer with us. All paying customers are in their full right to a Complaint sheet when requested. Let me be clear that we do have these Complaint sheets, we have been in business 11 years and are fully aware of our responsibility to you our customers.
Your more specific complaints in regards to the food were also addressed in our meeting, all employees are obliged to attend, but let me respond to these now. We use 100% real maple syrup imported from Canada from a specialized supplier Atlanta foods, i'm saying that maybe this day we ran out, it happens in our industry, and we were forced to make due with honey. Let me assure you that growing up in the USA and going to school in New England, I do appreciate the great taste of Maple syrup on pancakes and that is the reason we serve it in our brunch dishes. Again let me apologize once again if this day you came we were out, this happens, we will be more vigilant about keeping extra stock of it. Thanks for pointing this out.
As far as the mimosa goes yes you are correct, its Cava with orange juice (here in Catalonia we don't use Champagne since we support local Cava makers), these clarifications were made once more among our staff in our meeting.
In closing let me reiterate once more our apologies and to say once more that we appreciate you taking time to give us an honest review, it is clients like you that make us strive to be better.
We hope that you will be a patron once more if you find yourself in Barcelona again.
