“Loved this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Stayed 6 nights
Great sized room, very friendly staff.
Didn't sample the food
Location is absolutely perfect for Barcelona
Short walks to anywhere!

Would love to go back but it seems much more expensive whenever I look online now.

I stayed here for 1 night as part of a business trip with 2 colleagues towards the end of August.

While they had no issues with their rooms or service, I found myself covered with bites after one night in room 607. Since returning home these have been identified as BED BUGS. Not something I would ever expect from a supposed 5* hotel.

I contacted the hotel upon my return to complain but have not received a response, hence the review here.

Just returned from a 5 day break
Agree with earlier reviews the only 5 star bit was the location.
I have stayed at Eurostar gran marina in the past - quality of hotel although both 5 stars doesn't compare
Good bits first - location amazing - right in the heart but once in your room it was very peaceful
Cleaning and room hygiene was first class

Breakfast was okay - enjoyed the view overlooking the street - People watching at its best

Staff friendly and helpful

Now the not so good - rooftop jacuzzi not working
Bathroom set up , althought I was aware before I travelled wasn't to my taste , the modern decor wasn't either - it seemed cheap , lighting was frustrating and dark if u wanted to read
There were no draws so my room felt cluttered, I left lots of things in suitcase - no draws where do u put your underwear n personal bits? 5 Star???

Air conditioning was very cold - did report n they re set but was still cold - in early September sat in bed with cardi on when outside boiling hot - on night ran hot bath to warm room up.
Bed was however very comfortable and room was peaceful .

Safe wasn't secured to wall so didn't feel like my possessions were safe - everything was okay but if you wanted u could have picked up safe n walked - peace of mind makes for relaxed carefree time.
Did report but advised no hotel secures safe to wall - I however have never noticed safe loose in bottom of wardrobe before?
Would I go back really not sure - initially no - but it did grow on me and I had a fab holiday.

The location is what makes this a 4 star. Its about 3.
The hotel is overdesigned & its evident with the bathroom, sink(s) & key to operate. The lighting scheme is so frustrating. Im on vacation I dont want to think this much.
The staff was great, there is a full bar if you come back early & take in the view on the top floor.

This is a good hotel in an excellent location for shopping and sight-seeing but not very convenient for the beach. Very helpful and polite staff.

It's a clean and modern hotel with very contemporary design through out. It's definitely more suited towards adults and I probably wouldn't stay here with my children. There is no pool and only a very small Jacuzzi and decked area. The food is good but not 5*.

The only negative is the "bathroom" set-up - in fact the problem is the complete absence of a separate bathroom. The shower and toilet is basically in the room, behind frosted glass, so staying with anyone other than your partner could be a little embarrassing!

All in all more of a 4* than a 5* but the reasonable price tag makes up for this and proves that you do indeed get what you pay for.

Excellent position for sightseeing. Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was great value for money and the hotel is very well decorated. The only negative was design over-ruled functionality in a few areas... no large mirror and no place to put your toiletries for ladies getting ready for a night out.

We booked two nights here initially for our stay in Barcelona. When we arrived we were told there had been a leak and our rooms could not be made available. Credit is due to the reception team who organised quickly for us to stay, at no extra cost, in the Grand Marina Hotel. This is not a review of the Hotel Grand Marina, but as a quick aside, that is a stunning, true 5* hotel - stay here if you can (it's not always much more expensive than BCN, depends on how booked up they are).

Anyway, after our two days at the Grand Marina we decided to stick around in Barcelona for a further two days. As the Grand Marina was now circa £450 for a superior room we decided to try the BCN again and successfully secured a superior there. The staff were very friendly again, helpful pointing out various points of interest on a map and in fluent English.

The hotel is a little tatty. It's evident in the hallways particularly and in the rooms, despite the quirky "design" aspect, and gives the impression of a private university dorm. A note on the quirky design too: our room, and I think this goes for all of them, has it's toilet and shower right in the bedroom, only partitioned off by a glass door. So what looks quite cool in the pictures is actually quite impractical and rather indiscreet. As intimate as I like to be with my girlfriend, I don't really want to hear (and see!) her doing a number two in the morning ha-ha!

The wireless internet worked; I tested it at 3Mbps but it did struggle to stream video. Fine for making plans to further your trip. The satellite television played only Spanish channels, even with the surprising absence of BBC News. The Jacuzzi was covered with tarpaulin, the gym disappointing and only four sun loungers on the roof (which didn't get a whole lot of sun anyway).

The hotel location is away from the sea, just above La Rambla (where much of the action is). If this a shopping holiday for you, then the location is fairly ideal. If you want to bum around by the beach in the day this is not a good choice.

In summary: great staff; poorly designed hotel, well below the 5* grade your hoping to get for your money. Good for shopping and a short walk to bars and restaurants of La Rambla; not so good for the beach and ports. If I could book again, I would have done so early, secured a good price for a fancy room in Grand Marina (also part of the same holding company that owns BCN I believe) or tried my luck with one of the other coastal hotel. Hotel W by beach Barceloneta looks awesome but was out of our price range at the time. Rating: average.

Room Tip: We booked a superior and access to the balcony was prohibited (no key for door provided). I think th...
