“Very comfortable Parador hotel in beautiful surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

If you have the time and the money there is no better place in Spain to spend a week. The Parador was opened five years ago and you can tell a good proportion of the national debt has been spent on the renovation of the building. I was in a standard room but it was very spacious and elegant, not over furnished or overdecorated. The room had a balcony overlooking an outdoor restaurant in the garden, large spacious bathrooms, comfortable beds and the usual fridge and TV,
The hotel is in the spectacular village of La Granja de San Ildefonso set at the foot of the Guarrama mountains, which is famous for its palace, gardens and fountains which are a day's outing in themselves. You are also within driving distance of many other sights such as Segovia, El Escorial and the Valle de los Caidos. There are also some great walks up into the hills and pine forests. The village is very lively in the summer when many escape from the heat of Madrid but it is not just a tourist attraction; there is a thriving community here and so some good restaurants and bars.
The hotel is very easy to find, come in the main gates to the village and turn left, it's the big building on the left as you go downhill. The hotel has private parking in the village.

Just a couple of miles outside the ancient city of Segovia this Parador is definitely worth a visit.
Situated in the confines of the Hunting Palace of King Philip V of Spain.
The hotel has been constructed in one of the Old Royal Buildings and is a relatively new hotel.
The walls of the hotel are the original walls of the old building and are very thick. The rooms are excellent, modern, spacious and quiet. This is a hotel with a difference due to it's construction.
The public rooms are quite unique and comfortable. The restaurant is very good with the breakfast being excellent. Service in the bar like elswhere in the hotel was excellent and the bar snacks good value.
The swimming pool is seasonal. ( May to October?)
As the hotel is within the Palace grounds, the palace itself is worth a visit. We were there on a Wednesday in the off season but were fortunate enough to visit the palace when the "fountains show" was on and it was quite spectacular. The Palace is definitely worth a visit.
The town of La Granja/Ill Defonso is very quiet out of season but Segovia is only a short distance away if you wish to eat somewhere other that the Parador.

Room Tip: If you want a better view, rooms on the north side facing Segovia are slightly better.

The outdoor pool was empty when we were there which could have been a blow but in fact we loved the town and parador so much that we didn't mind. We found plenty of places to park on the street outside the parador and the parador is very close to the town and to the palace. The palace has free gardens which are huge and beautiful. If you are there on wednesday sat or Sunday at 5.30 pm definitely pay the few euros to see the fountains turned on in the gardens,of the palace. We had expected to be underwhelmed but they were spectacular! A man with a whistle and a spanish flag will let you know where to go to see them! Several good places to eat in the little town but the food and wine in the parador is excellent and good value and there is an outdoor dining area. The waiting staff are excellent and the kind head waitress showed us their wine store including a £240 bottle which we didn't try needless to say! Could happily live in la granja!

Wow, we were originally booked into the parador in Segovia but were not impressed with the view of the city on the opposing hill so we asked to relocate to this parador as soon as we arrived and what a pleasant change, granted it is outside of the city and you have a drive of about 5K to get back but it is worth it.

Room Tip: Corner suites are worth the upgrade

Very recently refurbished, rooms are stylish and it is located in the lovely village of la granja with it's superb palace and amazing gardens. Restaurant food and service were very good, not something you can always say about paradors, and the breakfast was excellent. Our suite (no 219) was huge and very comfortable. It seemd that the bathroom had been installed by a cowboy builder but this didn't affect our enjoyment of the stay.

This parador was absolutely lovely. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the small village is closed tighter than a tick on Monday and Tuesdays! Unless you wish to eat at the parador, think of doing so in Segovia which is a short drive from La Granja.

Very pleasant stay (despite the rain and snow!) The building is amazing; staff very obliging; food excellent; didn't venture into the spa because of the high price. All-in-all a lovely quiet weekend break.
