“This location couldn't be much better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

Stayed here three nights with my husband when driving through the county in February 2012. Finding the hotel car park was challenging due to the location in the middle of old town but with a good up-to-date navigator it finally worked out. Asking the hotel for directions would have been a very good idea, and that way we also would have avoided driving through most of the Salamanca old town.

We got to the hotel very late, and we were given an easy-to-access room in the ground floor, next to the lobby. The hotel seemed to be quite full but our room was surprisingly very quiet: no noise from the lobby or from the street outside. The room was well appointed and spacious, and it had a huge bathroom.

With this location and level of service it's pretty clear we'll be back in this hotel once in Salamanca again, at least now we know how to drive there.

When we arrived, and checked in (my daughter, grandaughter aged 5 and I) delighted to find that we were in the absolute centre of the town with lift access from the car park to our room, I asked if we could see the cathedral from our room. The receptionist changed our room so that we looked out directly onto the cathedral, which was dramatically lit at night (in Spain, they do this so well!). We spent a very comfortable and quiet night and there was no rush to vacate either the room or the car park the next day.
It was altogether a good experience. The room was large and comfortable, the staff extremely pleasant and helpful, and the price right.
Lovely!
Oh, and despite the cold and rain, and the slightly 'disney'-ish feeling of the centre of the city (co-ordinated street signs, twee little gardens and far too many souvenier shops littering the old centre), Salamanca is worth a detour for the cathedral(s) alone, especially the catedral vieja for its serenity in spite of the tourist presence!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the cathedral - its largely traffic free situation makes all rooms pre...

We had modest expectations, even though we had heard good things about the NH chain. The hotel was right in the center of town, near all the attractions, and was absolutely perfect! The price was very reasonable, the room was impeccable, and a full breakfast was offered for 10 Euros

Room Tip: We had a spacious, quiet room overlooking the courtyard

Spent two nights during generally rainy weather. Room was terrific -- not especially large, but very clean, well appointed, and with a view of the Cathedral. Staff was terrific and responded to our every need, even including the lending of umbrellas. The location is fabulous and it's quite easy to exit the hotel to visit the sites, and return to rest up for more sites. Breakfast was wonderful. Pricing is somewhat high, but worth it. Signage was good to get there, and the parking was useful (underground).

We chose the city because we had to stay somewhere on the road to Lisbon from Bilbao, and Salamanca seemed to be the best, because of its old town. Our arrival would be later than 18:00, and it would be a shame not to see the center. So it was a necessity to stay as near to the target as possible. As prices of 4* hotels there were not much different, we decided to take the chance. I say so, because old buildings are not our preference.

Well, evening and night of 22nd October make the best memory of our Portugal + Spain trip. The staff was incredible. The rooms were spotlessly clean and everything was in working order. After 5 minutes we were at Plaza Mayor. The old town is so full of monuments, that we dared not eat in a restaurant. We got huge batones filled with Spanish "jamon" from a store and wandered around until midnight. The quick glass of house wine from a bar was also incredible. As a heavy smoker, I had requested a room with balcony or terrace. Though the weather was a bit chilly, and we were damn tired, my wife could not be successful in putting me to bed until 01:30. Yes the terrace did not provide a front view of the Cathedral, but its roof is much more impressive when lighted up. You can smoke under the sky forever while sipping your wine!

The hotel has an underground parking which is entered through a peculiar side street. As the area is restricted, we were worried about getting into trouble while looking for the hotel. But they sent us a very useful google route and assured that hotel guests are allowed to drive in there. One might think the parking is expensive, but there is no closed parking place around, except for the university' s. You have to go down and up a hill to walk there and it is not that cheap either. Besides, there can be nothing better than unloading your luggage directly into an elevator, especially if you are going to load and unload each day, like us.

Although it rained and the temperature dropped down, we had a comfortable sleep, the air conditioner was adequate. As everything in the room, it was in perfect condition and looked new.

Breakfast? I have spent 30 nights in 22 different 3-4* hotels in Spain in the last 2 years. None could beat this. Do not miss the omlette! There are large glasses into which you fill the ingredients of your choice, like kinds of cheese, onion, ham, champinions, tomato cubes, etc., and hand it to the waiter. I don' t know what happens when there is a rush, but mine arrived in less than 5 minutes, although we were 4, ordering one after the other.

Do not hesitate, go stay there. The city and the hotel, both are worth 2-3 nights of visit in spring. The university fills the city with elegance, art and joy of youth. Be aware that the old town is on top of a hill where no public transport is present. Walking around is easy only if you do not go out of a 1km circle.

Room Tip: There are 4 rooms with terrace looking at side street and 4 (?) rooms with French (false) balconies...

What makes Puerta de la Catedral unique is its position - across a quiet square from the great cathedral and on the other side views to the edge of the city and the landscape beyond. Add to this its proximity to all the other great historical buildings and museums and the spectacular Plaza Mayor, and the atmosphere of being at the centre of a vibrant community. The outside of PdlC is understated and discrete being constructed out of the same rich ochre stone as the cathedral - the inside is mellow and welcoming, and our 2nd floor room though small was just right, comfortable bed and all amenities and looking out onto the edge of the city, and quiet at night - amazing considering we were in the centre. Buffet breakfast quite adequate and our stay at PdlC was very thoroughly enjoyable as we had this wonderful city to explore - you can do it all on foot, and I'd recommend the Art Nouveau museum, the Plaza Mayor (early evening), among many other sites depending on your interests. All details from the helpful receptionists.

Room Tip: Depending whether you want to see the Cathedral or the City - request a 2nd floor room. Excellent c...

We chose to book this hotel for a second time and was not disappointed. Comfortable beds, fantastic views of our neighbour (the cathedral), spotlessly clean and superb location for many eateries and sightseeing. The Plaza Mayor, Civil War Museum, Art Nouveau Museum, Cathedral, Casa Las Conchas and The University building with the frog on the front are all no more than about 7 minutes walk from this hotel. The lobby coffee bar is now chargeable to your room which was one change since our last visit. The hotel staff were unendingly helpful and polite and all room basics were suitable for a sightseeing stay, i.e. good shower, lighting, clean bedding, wardrobe space, efficient central heating to name but a few.
I could not recommend this hotel enough and would definately advocate that it is value for money if it is your price range.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the cathedral allow for a lovely view especially at night when the floodlights are on.
