We chose the city because we had to stay somewhere on the road to Lisbon from Bilbao, and Salamanca seemed to be the best, because of its old town. Our arrival would be later than 18:00, and it would be a shame not to see the center. So it was a necessity to stay as near to the target as possible. As prices of 4* hotels there were not much different, we decided to take the chance. I say so, because old buildings are not our preference.
Well, evening and night of 22nd October make the best memory of our Portugal + Spain trip. The staff was incredible. The rooms were spotlessly clean and everything was in working order. After 5 minutes we were at Plaza Mayor. The old town is so full of monuments, that we dared not eat in a restaurant. We got huge batones filled with Spanish "jamon" from a store and wandered around until midnight. The quick glass of house wine from a bar was also incredible. As a heavy smoker, I had requested a room with balcony or terrace. Though the weather was a bit chilly, and we were damn tired, my wife could not be successful in putting me to bed until 01:30. Yes the terrace did not provide a front view of the Cathedral, but its roof is much more impressive when lighted up. You can smoke under the sky forever while sipping your wine!
The hotel has an underground parking which is entered through a peculiar side street. As the area is restricted, we were worried about getting into trouble while looking for the hotel. But they sent us a very useful google route and assured that hotel guests are allowed to drive in there. One might think the parking is expensive, but there is no closed parking place around, except for the university' s. You have to go down and up a hill to walk there and it is not that cheap either. Besides, there can be nothing better than unloading your luggage directly into an elevator, especially if you are going to load and unload each day, like us.
Although it rained and the temperature dropped down, we had a comfortable sleep, the air conditioner was adequate. As everything in the room, it was in perfect condition and looked new.
Breakfast? I have spent 30 nights in 22 different 3-4* hotels in Spain in the last 2 years. None could beat this. Do not miss the omlette! There are large glasses into which you fill the ingredients of your choice, like kinds of cheese, onion, ham, champinions, tomato cubes, etc., and hand it to the waiter. I don' t know what happens when there is a rush, but mine arrived in less than 5 minutes, although we were 4, ordering one after the other.
Do not hesitate, go stay there. The city and the hotel, both are worth 2-3 nights of visit in spring. The university fills the city with elegance, art and joy of youth. Be aware that the old town is on top of a hill where no public transport is present. Walking around is easy only if you do not go out of a 1km circle.
Room Tip: There are 4 rooms with terrace looking at side street and 4 (?) rooms with French (false) balconies...
