“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I stayed there for one night on a business trip and was very happy with it. The room was a bit small, but very comfortable and clean. The hotel has atmosphere, it is not like other business-oriented hotels that tend to be rather impersonal. The rooms are modern, but they have managed to preserve the feel of a historic building. The location is perfect, too - right in the heart of the old city, very close to the cathedral, and also close to the train station. Very friendly staff as well - they helped me with everything I ask for, always with a smile. I cannot end the review without mentioning that the Agua de Terra amenities are way above the standard I would expect in any hotel - a small detail, but still a very nice touch to the overall experience.

The NH is a modern hotel in a historic buiding right on Plaza Mayor. The location is perfect for visiting the old city, as every point of interest is within walking distance, maybe with the exception of the San Marcos convent. There are plenty of restaurants around.
Our room (a superior one, nbr 206) was huge, with an unbeatable view of the square, and a lot of space (entrance, bathroom, closets, etc). Excellent bed. Although on the Plaza Mayor, we were not bothered by the noise, even if there was a market on the square on the next morning.
Personnel was nice and helpful. We could leave the car in the parking at no extra cost for a good part of the following day. Breakfast buffet was good, varied and abundant (14.75 euros). Should we return to León, we will no doubt stay at NH Plaza Mayor again.

Room Tip: Our superior room (206), opening on the Plaza Mayor could not be better.

We stopped there for 1 night while walking the Camino Santiago. As in all other NH Collection properties we had previously stayed in Spain, everything was perfect: quiet room with a very comfortable bed, great bathroom with Agua de Terra amenities, excellent soundproof, a small (but not that small) balcony with views towards the main square.
This hotel was efficient at delivering a very comfortable and cosy feeling, although it is by no mean a glitzy hotel. The staff at front desk was helpful and accommodating.
Excellent value. Strongly recommended.

Hotel is literally right inside of the plaza mayor, lots of bars and pubs around, 1 block away from the barrio humedo, and a 5 minute walk to the cathedral. Very clean room with a balcony with view to the plaza and very comfortable bed. Even though there was some sort of festival party happening right in front of the hotel we were still able to sleep. I don't know how noisy it would be on a weekend though lots of bars around!

You can't beat the location of the NH Plaza Mayor, especially if you get one of the rooms overlooking the plaza itself. Free Internet and large rooms with nice baths. What's not to like? The beds are comfortable. And like many hotels outside the US, the floors a wood, rather than carpet, which gives the rooms a clean, elegant feeling. The staff is quite helpful too.

The NH Plaza Mayor Hotel is in a lovely and central location. Unfortunately, there is very little else I can say that is good about this hotel.

Access from the road (arrived by taxi) is through a very cramped parking garage and an even more cramped (and groddy) elevator -- both very difficult for one of my traveling companions with size and mobility issues.

The rooms are basic and nothing more. And HOT, HOT, HOT! Despite asking how and getting instruction from the staff, we were never able to bring on the A/C or even turn down the heat. In one room we slept with French doors wide open to the street to cool down, but the room only came down to 23-degrees [74 F.] despite being 6-degrees [43 F.] outside -- and the street was very active and noisy through the wee hours of the morning. In our second room the temperature stayed over 26-degrees [79 F] all night long.

The bathrooms are VERY small and extremely poorly designed: bidet and toilet so close together facing each other that you had to step over the two to sit. And then there was the toe-stubbing door stops -- I finally dropped a roll of TP over the door stop just so that I'd not catch my toe on it in the night. Plus the showers were narrow, and water went everywhere in the bathroom because even the slim ones amongst us kept hitting the "door" open -- and the larger amongst us couldn't close the shower door at all.

Choice of music in the dining and lobby areas was a lot of Whitney Houston. This could usually be avoided but the Wi-Fi was only free for 1/2 hour per devise and then only in the lobby. Little is more frustrating than trying to concentrate hard enough to get all the computering done in 30 minutes through repeating strains of "I Will Always Love You" crumpled up on out-dated lobby furniture.

The restaurant was serviceable and nothing more. Breakfast buffet was very picked over and not quickly replenished. At least it was open for lunch -- we were traveling with one who had come down with a virus and we needed to stay close to a bed -- but that said, we had to go pay at the check-in desk (waiting out several customers apparently trying to adjust reservations) and couldn't even coax the restaurant staff to let us pay in cash instead. Menu reads a bit like a chain.

To their credit, the staff did let us delay our check-out by an hour to accommodate the late train and in deference to the one person with illness in our party without extra charge.

It's a pity, really. The setting is so beautiful and the location right on the pedestrian zone. Unfortunately because one was ill, we didn't go out of the hotel for food, so I don't know how the eating was nearby, but certainly the town was hopping late in the evening. Still there were so many obvious and avoidable flaws that just I won’t be going back there again, can I cannot recommend it to anyone. On paper it's 4-stars, but in action I can't see how they got more than 2 ... and even then, I'd pass this one by.

Yes, the room was spacious and comfortable, with everything you'd need, and the bathroom well equipped. Yes, the staff at the reception desk was friendly and efficient. But what I remember most, and will never forget, is looking out of the windows - morning, noon and evening- and seeing the Plaza Mayor right before me. Unbeatable!
