“Could be better, could be a lot worse too”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

I stayed 2 nights on a whirl wind tour of Spain at the Campus San Mames. This hotel is in the San Mames neighborhood, a good 20-30 minute walk from the center of town. There is parking out front and a cafe/bar called Casablanca across the street. The rooms were clean, everything worked, the staff was nice. There are no glaring don't stay here signs to report, but there are some considerations.

1) The walls are super thin- one night at 2 am it sounded like someone was moving furniture. It was really loud and you can see from my other reviews I am not the type to complain lightly

2) Ask for a non smoking room- the room I got smelled heavily of smoke. I opened a window and it was ok later but if someone is sensative to smoke it would be bad. I am sure it would be just fine in a non smoking room but you need to ask for it when booking.

3) The weather was dreary when I got there, so this may have exacerbated the feeling, but the area felt somewhat depressing. You are going to spend all of your time by the catherdral and the old cityt anyway, so it is up to you to decide if saving a considerable amount of money is worth it.

Overall- no huge issues and a good value for the money, it's just that if where you stay has a huge impact on your enjoyment of your time look in the center

Room Tip: Ask for non smoking. Be sure of this

Too far away from the downtown, but good. Price was good too. Convenient, simple, but very large room with citchen. Stuff is very helpfull and nice. If you really need something - they try to help you. Very pleasant. If you need to buy something to cook - a big supermarket is a 3 minutes from the hotel. On foot :-) But for a car`s parking you need to pay.....

Nice hotel, with convenient free parking in circular driveway right in front of hotel. Parking garage costs extra. Large modern room with kitchenette. Good bathroom with ample room. Breakfast was good with fruit, yogurt, coffee bar and plenty of fresh juice. Location was good if you have a car, but it was about a 15 minute walk to the center of town. I don't recommend driving into town because parking is difficult and one can always take a taxi. Overall the hotel is a good value for the money.

We have stayed here on 2 separate occasions already en route to and from Portugal and are planning another stay shortly. The hotel is very good value for money.

The rooms are extremely spacious and provide more than ample room for luggage and moving around. The bathroom is also great and the water pressure and temperature both great.

Upon request a cable can be provided for in-room laptop internet usage.

Would definitely recommend!

Firstly I have to mention the staff at this hotel. All of them where fantastic. We had problems with trains whilst we were staying here. They were happy to ring people, print things, change bookings, all with a smile. They were fantastic. The rooms were roomy and it was great to have a kitchen. You do have to pay 6 euros to hire cooking equipment but if you are staying for a few days it is worth it. The hotel is about 15 minutes from the centre and is not walking distance from the train station. We really enjoyed staying here. For the money it was the best place we stayed in Spain.

We found this hotel late an hight as we arrived in Léon without booking accomodation.
The hotel is very good, great rooms with excellent furniture and huge size, modern and with comfort.
The price is very good for the quality of the service.
Distant from the centre of Léon, but ok if you have car.
The breakfast was good, didn't have great variety but for the price I won't complain
I recommend it!

The Husa Campus San Mames is an excellent three-star hotel near the University of Leon and an easy ten-minute walk to the city walls which mark the beginning of the city centre.
Rooms are exceptionally large and light. As this is not a city-centre building the hotel possesses none of the dreaded 'interior' rooms for which Spanish hotels are infamous -- those little cubicles that face out onto a tiny light shaft and within which the guest never has any idea if it's night or day outside. The rooms are furnished in a very simple manner with plain beech-coloured, functional table, chairs, and bedside cabinets. Bathrooms are fully equipped (i.e. they contain a bath and a bidet, amenities with which many newer Spanish hotels aimed at the foreign tourist market now dispense). Each room boasts a kitchenette with a full-sized under-counter larder fridge and icebox, and a two-ring hob.
Kitchen utensils can be borrowed free of charge from reception, as can a steam iron. Guests will find a range of leaflets about local amenities on the reception counter, staff will provide a free map of the city, and free magazines and newspapers (in Spanish only) are also available from reception and the cafeteria.
The rooms, cafeteria, and all public areas of the hotel are spotlessly clean.
There are a number of cafes and restaurants near the hotel, as well as several shops selling goods of various sorts. Guests who stay at this hotel for some time and wish to cook meals for themselves will find three supermarkets nearby, the closest being only a two-minute walk away (Mercadona).
The staff at the reception of this hotel were outstandingly friendly and helpful. Indeed, I can quite honestly say that I have virtually never received reception service of this sort. As Leon is a small city and the staff are all local they can give directions and advice on just about anything a guest may need to know! The cleaning staff and cafeteria staff are also extremely friendly and are more than willing to assist in any way they can.
This hotel is not a five-star luxury pad; it is a plain and simple three-star affair which nonetheless offers all necessary amenities to the guest. It deserves 5 out of 5 within its category.
My only caveat about this hotel is that the continental breakfast is a rather meagre affair, and the buffet breakfast seems a bit overpriced for the quality of the food on offer. If staying some time at this hotel it might be better, in terms of economy and quality, to pop round to the supermarket and stock up on yoghurt, juice, fruit, coffee, and croissants for breakfast.
All in all a cracker of a place, and highly recommended for longer visits to Leon, for families with children who need a large room, for visitors to the university, and anybody who wants to stay in a large, spotlessly clean room with plenty of sunlight, and receive the attentions of outstandingly friendly staff.

  • Liked — Spotlessly clean; very friendly staff; huge room full of sunlight
  • Disliked — Ghastly sugar-laden orange drink at breakfast buffet
