“Not quite what I expected...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Lovely renovation of the building and some interesting pieces. The video is worth seeing as it has English subtitles.

“A convent packed with artefacts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

Well worth the 4 euro entry fee, don't miss El Greco's resting place which you can just see through a glass panel in the floor. The place is full of interesting artwork, religious artefacts, sculptors, etc The nuns in attendance are very helpful. Make sure you go.

“Head straight for the museum!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

We found that the church nearby to the museum in which we had expected to see various El Greco paintings was disappointing. However, the museum itself albeit a mock-up of El Greco's house was atmospheric, informative and contained lots of beautiful art work

“More history than art”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Although there are several paintings and good documentarys what you will find out is how houses used to be. Of course a must if you are a "Greco fan"

“As already stated, these are two distinct buildings, far away from each other”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2012

But since they are both mentioned, I will write a review of the former, which we visited back in March of 2011.

We climbed the hill to the Convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo and waited dutifully for the bell to ring telling us that it was time for the afternoon hours. We had the building mostly to ourselves, watched by one of the sweet sisters. It ended up being a much larger building than it seemed at first, with I think it was 2 large rooms that looked like a sacristy filled with items - altarpieces and various sorts of things worked out in wood and other materials - and then the sanctuary with the early El Grecos and some other beautiful pieces.

As with some other buildings in Toledo (like the Cathedral), there was no photography allowed, unfortunately. The nun didn't follow us when we went into the sanctuary, so I suppose I could've whipped out my Canon and gotten a couple of shots with no flash, but I felt like that would've been disrespectful. So I will have to be satisfied with my memories of this place with its creeky floors and lack of lighting, which nevertheless managed to be filled with great beautiful things.
