“WORST HOTEL IN SPAIN”

Since 1969 I have visited, worked in, lived in Spain, in a variety of 'lifestyles'. In any category, at any price, I have never found such a poorly run hotel. Surly, even unplesant reception staff; dirty rooms; in fact, I felt that place was sinister and vaguely threatening. We were glad to leave without breakfast very early the next morning.

Even our dog was upset, and it's funny, because you know how they say dogs sense something. He was in the 4x4 in the car park and barked and howled all night -- yet, he has travelled extensively in that vehicle around Europe without any problems. In fact, he loves the ritual of travelling and sleeping in the Cherokee. He has never done that before or since in any place where we have stayed.

Sad, because location and setting are magnificent, but it is doubtful to me that these compensate for the sheer unpleasantness of staying there.

We chose hotels from TripAdvisor, and this one was also in many guide books. For good reason. La Almazara is not fancy, but it has the friendliness I remember from student hostels (over 30 years ago!). It is also incredibly convenient: Situated above the city but close to a main gate, we could park for free at the ancient gate, walk through the labyrinthine streets for hours, and eventually return to our car and the hillside (about a 3 minute drive). Our room had a balcony with an incredible view of the city. We also enjoyed the extensive gardens on the Almazara's grounds. The staff speaks English.

We have been staying at this hotel for the last 20 years or so and the same family runs the hotel thru the years. They have worked here for generations and are very charming, hospitable and helpful. The proximity to the main attractions of the walled city is a plus and the views of Toledo and the parador are truly spectacular, especially at night. The rooms have great patios from which to watch the city light up and the sun go down. This is a great find if you can forgo luxury. The rooms are very clean , but basic. The hotel used to be a monastery and then became an olive mill. The charm of the old olive trees and stone building and the quietness of the surroundings surpass staying within the city walls. Especially, at a much more reasonable price!

    • Liked — sa situation excentrée et son calme
    • Disliked — j'aurais aimé trouver un distributeur de boissons fraîches ou un réfrigérateur à notre disposition, cela faisait vraiment défaut surtout en août
