It is nicely located close to the beach, it feels a bit old, but rooms have good space, in 5 min you are walking on the sea front, quiet area and comfortable bed made it for a good sleep. Several restaurants around, and close to the Casino (if you care about it).

We stayed in this hotel on a mini break with "Brittany Ferries". The reception area was very impressive very large and marble clad. The reception staff were friendly and the booking in was painless. The room we had was on the sixth floor and had a great view of the sea and a headland in the background. The air conditioned room was large, well decorated, furnished with a minibar and safe. The bathroom was well appointed with all the usual facilities. We did not dine in the hotel apart from breakfast which had a very extensive range of hot & cold food. A great start to the day.
The location was fabulous, only a couple of minutes away from the famous "Sandinero beaches".
There are numerous walks from the hotel along the well maintained beaches, gardens and promenades.
The city centre is a short bus ride away with a frequent service.
I would certainly return to Santander and the friendly Santemar hotel.

Room Tip: The higher floors have a better view.

We stayed in this hotel only 1 night on our way from Madrid to Pamplona. It was a nice, quite big hotel, near the beach ( and I saw a casino nearby!). The room was not very spacious but okay for two. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and have all that you'd need. Opposite the hotel across the road were a few eateries, so if you don't want to eat in, I'd guess you won't have any problem. We arrived late afternoon and since the weather was nice we went for a pleasant stroll along the beach. We did not eat in, except for breakfast, but we had coffee & snacks in the coffee house. There was only 1 person attending to the guests, but he seemed efficient enough and it did not take that long to be served. Overall, I'd say this is a good hotel and would stay there again if we are in Santander.

My wife and I had driven to Santander from Madrid and decided to stay at this hotel for the few days we would stay in this beautiful coastal city. The hotel is easy enough to get to by car, with its own underground secure car park which is always a plus point.

Due to the indifferent reviews of this hotel, we were not expecting anything spectacular, despite being a 4* star hotel. The lobby area is open and attractive. The lady at reception spoke Spanglish but she was very funny and we understood what she meant. She took the time to demonstrate the major landmarks in the city and recommended various restaurants to us which was nice.

On entering our room, we found it to be a good size, with a nice big, comfortable bed. There was also a selection of fruit and water left for us as a welcome gift which was very much appreciated! We were on the 7th floor and the view towards the sea was beautiful. The bathroom had everything you would expect in Spain, including bidet. There were also bathrobes and slippers which was also a nice touch. The a/c didn't work too well when we there, but fortunately we didn't need it since the temperatures were cool. There is free wifi throughout the hotel but sadly it didn't work on any of our devices in our room but we did log on in the lobby area. We had just come from the Hilton in Madrid which charged a frankly ridiculous €20 per day for wifi, so it was nice to get free wifi despite the teething problems.

Santander is a great little town with a beautiful coast. I can only recommend spending time walking to the town and around the Palace of Magdalena, which also happens to be the location used for Spain's excellent drama, Gran Hotel.

On leaving the hotel, we decided to have the set lunch menu before departing for our next destination. The cost of the set menu of 3 meals was €16 per person which my wife and I opted for. We sat down and immediately were asked what we wanted. We asked for 5 minutes to look through the menu and decide. 20 minutes later, we were trying to get the attention of the waitress who appeared to ignore us when we kept looking at her with arms waving. Just to add, there was only one other person in the restaurant at this point. Normally I would walk out as I'm paying for a service which I'm not receiving but we didn't have this option due to time constraints. Sadly, the food was as bad as the service, and the crucified lamb dish I had was one of the worst meals I've eaten in a 'restaurant'. It was a shame as it would have been great to leave this large hotel on a good note but our experience in the restaurant has sadly, and with great reluctance, altered my decision to downgrade my review of the hotel from a 5 to a 4.

We spent just under £50 per night and you can't get much better value for money than that. There's no doubt we will return to the hotel, we just won't eat in the restaurant and I strongly recommend you all to consider eating there.

Pros
clean, functional and spacious rooms
decent bathroom with great shower
gorgeous sea view
location near Magdalena peninsula and 30 minutes walk from town (can also get there by bus with nearby bus stop)
value for money

Cons
a/c had behavioural issues
slow wifi (didnt work at all in the evening)
restaurant had slow, unattentive staff and food was poor

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor (7, 8 or 9) with a sea view to really appreciate the hotel's vi...

We stayed at the Santemar Hotel in May last year it was in a very pleasant spot close to the beach and the Palace (which is well worth going to for the view and the little zoo) the bus stop is close by and buses are frequent to travel into town and to the ferry about a 15 min journey. The hotel was clean comfortable and served a very good breakfast, staff were pleasant and helpful, would stay there again. We travelled on the Brittany Ferries Pont Avon short break and would recommend this trip 1 night each way on the ferry from Portsmouth and 5 nights in the hotel entertainment on the ship was very good, cabins and food were good. We have done this trip 3 times now.
