Description: Located in the heart of Santa Cruz, in a pedestrian shopping area Tasca el Callejon is a charming place, where you can taste the best of Canarian cuisine. With wide spaces, stands up a rustic decor and hardwood, respecting some of the values of the previous establishment, like its Tabacco Museum tribute; as well as a splendid terrace to enjoy the very cosmopolitan commercial area of the city environment Directed by Braulio Simancas, considered one of the gurus of new Canarian cuisine, also runs the restaurant "Las Aguas" Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque, offering a menu with a commitment to Canarian tapas and to the fresh ingredients from the local orchard.

“great atmosphere and food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

i went here two nights ago, i thought i was ordering tapas. so i ordered 5 or 6 things on the menu, the last of which was a cheese platter, the waiter (who spoke english!) looked at me and said maybe i should just have half a cheese platter... when my spanish tortilla came out i understood why! the tortilla was maybe 4 cm thick and about a quarter of a whole! and... absolutely delicious! the rest of the tapas i ordered was also really good. it came out well presented on little dishes with forks and knives with all the fancy swirl of an expensive restaurant.

there is no "inside" to this place. the location is great, and it's right near a park so good people watching. decent lighting (for me i was alone, so i was reading my kindle) and the service was friendly and quick.

“Very hectically busy restaurant but tasty, good food!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We went there on a Thursday night, around 9pm (it is usually around that time when places are opening for dinner). The place was full, numerous waiters running around, hectic. We were told to wait for 5 minutes until one of the tables frees up, but due to lack of organization or cooperation, we ended up waiting a bit longer, and then one of the other waiters told us to just sit in the "old cigar room"--which caused some arguments between the waiters and uncomfortability of the situation for us. Anyway, it took a while to get the menus and to order also. We were served by at least 4 different personnel that didn't communicate clearly with each other. So we ended up with getting a non ordered juice, non ordered bread for which we had to pay (almost 2 euros for two pieces of bread with a tiny piece of butter), and late appetizers. We ordered the canarian style potatoes with "mojo" sauce for the appetizer, and it was delicious, beautifully presented, but not enough for two people. For the main we ordered squid with ink aioli and solomillo de cerdo (pork dish). The squid dish was a big portion of modern and very tasty, with rich and complex flavored aioli. The pork dish, on the other side, was "brown" looking, with no distinct flavor of either pork or other condiments, so that was a disappointment. If to recommend this place, I would definitely suggest coming either earlier or at least not in the busy time, because the lack of service if clearly visible in that hours. Would recommend the squid dish most definitely.

“Slightly Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

Firstly to caveat this review slightly we visited the restaurant in that strange period between Christmas and the New year and the restaurant was lacking in atmosphere. Despite arriving c.omparatively early by Spanish standards before 8 o'clock we were unable to get a table outside. The inside of the restaurant left a little to be desired with it not knowing whether it was a restaurant or tapas bar. The tapas area was large but lacking people whilst the table arrangement in the restaurant area looked cobbled together, ladies had to squeeze past our table to use the restrooms and at the same time I was treated to a permanent view of the kitchen with the bin and dirty plate stacking station no more than 3 metres away for some reason the door to he kitchen was propped open

Moving to the meal, the starters and main course did not disappoint with a very good squid in its ink dish followed by an excellent solomiio of pork dish. The service we received throughout was very good and we were Also recommended a good local wine which was reasonably priced. The desserts however disappointed in flavour and texture. Value for money was reasonable although we were charged for bread that was not served. I would not rush back in a hurry as Santa Cruz has a good number of similar establishments to sample.

Good food and service, with both some ambition and quality. Not excellent though, but decent value. Served bread which we didnt ask for but still had to pay for.
