Puerto is a great location for winter sun always bearing in mind that cloud cover can make certain days quite chilly. As I'm of celtic origin and need to slap on factor 1000 on very hot days the ability not to compound my gleaming whiteness with a pile of lard was much appreciated.
Need to know ~ Puerto:
- The more inland, the higher up the mountain you are, I heard talk of 'cardiac hill' so the nearer the sea, the more you'll be able to get round before exhaustion/heat stroke finishes you off.
- To say it 'attracts an older set' is to put it mildly. In our early fifties we were amongst the younger people there in March before the season proper starts.
- As could be predicted, some of this 'older set' (predominantly from the north of Britain, Germany, Finland and Spain when we were there) hadn't been taught that it's rude to stare so if you don't look and dress like them expect to be blatantly stared at!
- Lots of good restaurants, look at the suggested ones here on TripAdvisor - it worked for us
- Don't be taken in by the 'you've won a free holiday' with horisuns (yes really!) as it's a scam.
- The bus service is excellent so if you want to go to the capital or down the coast then use it (and buy the special money off pass)
- There's not much in Icod or Garancha. These trips have been created by the tour companies to try and make money out of you. You'd be better off getting on and off the local bus if you want to see the dubious 'sights' in these towns
- There's only a black sand beach to sunbathe on in P dl C if that's all you like to do on holiday
- There's a business opportunity for someone to open a wine bar in P dl C, Tenerife and the surrounding islands have a large number of indigenous grape varieties but I couldn't see anywhere where you could try them by the glass, Would have been ideal if there was a wine bar selling tapas for maybe a slightly more upmarket crowd
