“Good hotel a few improvements would make it great.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013 via mobile

I have recently returned from the Bahia Principe San Felippe. The hotel is spotless and the rooms are well-equipped good however some Junior Suite rooms are much smaller than the hotel website would have you believe. The food at the hotel is overall good, lots of variety in the main restaurant although sometimes the freshly cooked meats were not cooked fully. One unusual aspect was how miserable some of the female waitresses (corgetta and neomi) in the main restaurant and on reception were at times they came across rude and abrupt as they didn't smile or greet you - that said this was just a few and most hotel staff were amazing, pleasant and went that extra mile to be helpful and make your stay good. The pool snack bar was disappointing the food lacked variety and was not cooked freshly and chicken, hot dogs, chips and burgers etc were at best warm having been in a hot tray. The pool was just lovely, there were plenty of sunbeds and the pool side was kept really clean by a worker. The spa was a real treat lovely facilities but expensive and seemed more often empty. The entertainment at the hotel was overall poor with just two reasonable acts worth seeing in two weeks, a lot of the entertainment ie falcon display, snake show was okay but probably cost the hotel nothing as they made there money by charging guests about 30 euros for photographs - the entertainment was disappointing.

The hotel is situated in an excellent location close to Lago Martinez and easy walking distance to the town and amenities, whilst being just far enough away from the noise of the sea front entertainment and street sellers. There is an unobtrusive indoor shopping complex behind the hotel, including a grocery supermarket. There is also a smaller grocery store close by on the sea front for any essentials, which is open until 10pm.

We chose the hotel San Felipe after reviewing several hotels on the Internet including Trip Advisor.
We had also looked at H10 Tenerife Player, Luabay, El Tope, Semiramis, Botanico. After visiting the location of all the others during our stay, for location San Felipe is unbeatable. Many of the others are up steep hills, except for H10 Tenerife Player, which is on the front but nearer to the hustle and bustle.

The hotel is a true 4 star, with potential to go one better. As many have mentioned the hotel is spotless, however some furnishings are showing wear in the lobby and should be replaced.
Most of the staff cope easily with English language, if you don't feel comfortable trying Spanish.

The restaurant staff are very hard working and clear and turn the tables around in record time. The older experienced staff were more welcoming than someof the younger staff. Some guests were rude and would wind up the staff. While we were there, couples were taking tables set for five or six and others taking chairs from other set tables, which clearly annoyed the waiters. The buffet food is very varied and there is something different to find every day. I varied between salads, roasts and more exotic food such as swordfish, squid, caviar. Full English and continental breakfasts are catered for, the coffee is hot and the wine is plentiful. Most guests appeared to be all inclusive and it's definitely the way to go. As all inclusive, take the opportunity to visit the Mediterranean and Italian a-la-carte restaurants the hotel offers, they are good sized meals of excellent quality.

The proportion of guests appeared to be about 40% Spanish, 30% German, 20% British and 10% other nationalities.

The hotels evening entertainment in the bar lounge was basic but ok with the staff always attentive. Look out for evening shows up on the next floor a few times a week.

This is an excellent hotel and a safe choice to return to.

Room Tip: There is no balcony above floor 16 rooms, so your own balcony is not in shade and has clear views...

Just returned from a week here with my daughter - her requirements for a good holiday were simple - nice pool and a great breakfast. My main requirement was to relax in the sun with a book and not worry about cooking!

Well our requirements were certainly met. This is a lovely Hotel, rooms are clean and functional (though the bathrooms would benefit from a bit of a makeover in the future). We didn't need to use the air con as we had a sea view which does not have the sun during the day and by leaving the door open at night it stays cool. We weren't disturbed by the sea or traffic. There is a wait for the lifts but being on 3rd floor we used the stairs.

How anyone could complain about the food we don't know. There was something for everyone and the choice was amazing. The dining room is very well run and the staff were all lovely. It was also nice to see that a dress code was adhered to in the evening. Along with the pool bar which serves snack food all day we felt very well served. Drink selection is good, try the local honey rum!

Pool and gardens are beautifully kept, though sun parasols are often in short supply and really need to be more plentiful. Lunch time pool aerobics session is a little noisy but if you don't want to join in then go in and eat....as the constant whistle blowing is annoying and unnecessary (Hotel management please take note).

Evening entertainment is not great - but as others have stated you cant please everyone and its not what we went for. Outside bar area is waitress served - and these girls work their socks off and are very friendly and helpful. While the all inclusive bar service ends at 11pm it does tend to clear the bar but we often sat out later and you can buy drinks if you haven't managed to drink enough in the allowed time! However, the outside lighting could be improved as we gave up on playing cards later in the evening. One note is that lots of people stayed around the bar and lounges and with a more enthusiastic DJ they could actually have people up and dancing on the dance area, rather than have children sliding over it....

A stroll along the front is good and the Hotel is well placed for this without being noisy. Its sad to see some of the bars in town so little used (probably due to all inclusive deals at the Hotel) but prices are not too high to stop and enjoy a cocktail or after dinner coffee. Very sad that the Hotel could not show Wimbledon final so we found a sports bar in the town (The BeeHive).

Only niggle was that we did not see our holiday rep at all (Thomas Cook not Hotel fault) and didnt find reception staff as helpful as they could have been.

Would we come back ? Absolutely !

Room Tip: Sea view if you like it cooler. Lower floor if you dont want to wait for lift

Went on a package deal with Jet 2. We chose this hotel because we have stayed at Bahia Principe hotels in the Caribbean and found them to be excellent. This one was a bit disappointing in comparison. In this hotel the grounds and rooms are smaller. The aircon was good only for keeping you awake with the noise as it had no cooling effect whatsoever. We found it was cooler if we just left the patio doors open, but could not leave them open all night as the sound of the waves breaking on the beach would keep us awake (we were on the sea facing side of the building which got sun in the morning only). The queue for the lifts at peak times could also be agitating. Safe hire in the room cost 17.5 euros for the week, which I thought was extortinate. Other hotels we have used charge only a returnable deposit for the safe, whereas here the cost was not refundable.
On the good side, we found the staff great and contrary to other reports we thought the food was about the best all inclusive buffet type food we have had anywhere. You have to bear in mind mass catering is never going to be as good as an individually cooked meal, so all in all I think they did a good job. The guy that manages the restaurant runs it like a well oiled machine and even at peak times there is very little wait to be seated. As well as the Buffet, there are 2 other themed resaurants that you can use (you need to book these in advance), but we never got the chance to try either of those. The pool and grounds are pleasant and there was never any shortage of sunbeds.
The hotel is close to the town and there are several restaurants and bars within easy walking distance if you fancy eating out for a change.
Loro Parque is worth a visit (free transport from outside of McDonalds), but at peak times the queues to get in are large and the queueing system is a shambles. Top tip is buy your ticket in advance, cost I think was 33 euros per adult in June 2013. Queues aside though, the shows are great, The Orca show left us wondering how happy the animals really are even though the show was impressive. The one not to miss is the Sealion show, they just look like they are having such a good time. Be warned though, food and drink inside the park is VERY expensive.
My great gripe with all inclusive chains is that they suck the life out of nearby towns. This is apparent in Puerto de la Cruze where there are now scores of closed and empty bars and restaurants that would have once contibuted to a busy and vibrant town. Sad to see.
Would we go back? Possibly if we went back to Puerto de la Cruz, but I don't think we will be returning to the island of Tenerife anytime soon.

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms are cooler. Lower floor rooms mean you can use the stairs instead of waitng in the...

Dear Doug,

Thank you for your review about Bahia Principe San Felipe and for giving us your feedback, which we really appreciate and take into account.

It is a pleasure to know that you have enjoyed the friendly staff , the food variety and found the pool and grounds pleasants.

We understand that affter having visited a Resort in the Caribbean you came expecting the same level of 24 hour of entertainment or services here. However we are a small city hotel, in the middle of the fisherman town of Puerto de la Cruz. Most of our guests regularly leave the hotel to see the lovely island of Tenerife and visit the town of Puerto de la Cruz as you have mentioned before. We also have entertainment for those who stay and wish to enjoy our gardens, pool area or relaxing by the Bahia spa.

We are sorry for those other aspects where we have not met your expectations, be assured that your comments have been already brought to the General Management for a review.

We would like to welcome you again in the future in Bahia Principe San Felipe or Bahia Principe Tenerife Resort.

Kind regards,

Juliana Sandoval

Firstly, I would take Dr J's review with a pinch of salt. The food was very good, and the carrots and fish I had were fine. It's not really practical to keep pizza warm for hours, it would be all hard and crispy and he'd be moaning about that instead.

The staff at the hotel are friendly and the service is excellent. I read the comments about some of the older males being a little grumpy. They are perhaps not as smiley and personable as the female and younger staff, but the service was always efficient.

The garden and pool areas are spotless and the drinks selection is good. In the lounge bar at night you can queue at the bar and there are also a few waitresses who do their best to take orders at tables and clear glasses.

Our main problem was the air conditioning in the room. Even at the lowest setting the room was very warm. We therefore slept with the windows wide open but it was still warm and also difficult to sleep because of the noise from the sea.

Instead of a double bed in the room it was two single beds pushed together, which isn't ideal if you are on a romantic holiday.

The entertainment at night wasn't great but I appreciate it is difficult to cater to everyone's tastes. There was a real mix of nationalities there and a lot of older couples.

The maids were excellent and always cleaned our room even when we slept late. You also get your fridge re-filled with beer, fizzy juice and water twice a week.

Ideas for improving the hotel experience would be to have a kettle in the room, and some music at the pool. They also had a rule of no lilos in the pool which is a bit strange. What harm can they do? I was quite looking forward to chilling on a lilo! The all inclusive finishes at 11pm which is quite early. I got a good deal on the holiday so can't complain too much, but the bar empties at 11pm because of this but doesn't close until 12.30. On a few nights the evening entertainment was still on after 11pm but there was only a handful of people left in the bar. Could the all inclusive perhaps be extended until 11.30? It may also be an idea to have some bread or crisps at the lounge bar if you get a bit peckish later on after dinner.

Overall, this is a very good, professionally run hotel which is let down by a few issues in the rooms that need looked at. Given the air con situation, I struggled to sleep which made you knackered the next day and effected my enjoyment of the holiday. We probably wouldn't return because of this, but I hope they can get it sorted.

Hotel lovely with well cared for gardens. Staff superb and helpful. However, Management would not answer when air conditioning not working. Three days in row complained. Eventually staff told to advise us that repair in hand (each day for four days!). However, this was untrue. Would not change room away from noisy road so that windows could be open at night to cool room. Have stayed here for many years but will not go back again now.
