“Quality Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

The Botanico is a top class hotel in Northern Tenerife. On top of the hill overlooking the lovely Puerto de la Cruz you can certainly get fit by walking up and down the hill if you wish! Excellent, helpful staff and immaculate gardens. The highlight for me is definitely the Spa with both an outdoor pool and indoor mini-pool, jacuzzi and full spa circuit ranging from the baking sauna to the sub-zero cold room. Then of course there are a wide array of treatments in the Spa and I have tried a wide range and can highly recommend anything you might care to try. There are various places nearby to visit including the fabulous Loro Parque but for me this is a hotel to come and relax.

Excellent hotel and the service was welcoming and attentive at all times. Botanico was a very special hotel and we were travelling with two young kids who enjoyed themselves too. The rooms were luxurious and the bathroom had the most refreshing rain showers. The balcony was nice with a good view of Mount Teide. The grounds in the hotel are amazing and the kids enjoyed the quiet, palatial grounds with the fantastic koi carp in the lake and the black swan chicks. The spa was world class and my wife enjoyed her massage treatment greatly for her special birthday treat. Thank you to the team at Botanico, see you hopefully soon. A special mention to Antonio at the door!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

This was our first trip to Tenerife and the Hotel Botanico, but we are keen to return. (Especially after getting back to England to be greeted by rain and 6 degree C temperatures...in May.) Overall, an excellent experience. Between the two of us, we have traveled most of the world and stayed in a lot of places (work and fun trips). The Hotel Botanico was at the very top for consistent top-level friendly service by the team. That, and the amazing hotel grounds, make this place exceptional. Summary by area:

++Reception/Concierge: All helpful, but Vanesa deserves special note for being so genuinely cheerful and helpful. The lead concierge (sorry, her name escapes me at the moment) was also especially helpful, researching Mt. Tiede summit permissions, booking cave tours, etc..

++Food and beverage:
Breakfasts were good, lots of variety on offer and all food fresh. The fruit and fresh juices were really appreciated. Sometimes the egg/omelette station gets a backlog, but on the last day a second team member came over and helped do fried eggs. This plan should be kept in place, especially going into busier times. Only other minor issue was that at least half of the days, the tea water which I was given was not hot enough to make tea. It would be better to fill the jugs with boiling water at the time of serving, not in advance.
Dinner: We only had one dinner in the hotel, in the Oriental restaurant. Food was lovely, with an excellent sauce on the duck curry.

++Housekeeping: The team taking care of our room (251) were top-notch. They reported a maintenance issue and arranged repair before we needed to, which is excellent. Appreciated the warm greetings every morning.

++Hotel room: The room itself was one of the more recently refurbished rooms, but in a traditional European style. All rooms have a balcony, which is nice. Mattress was acceptable, but I have had better - there was a very noticeable seam between the two single beds that were put together to form a "king size", and the mattress will likely be due for an update soon. (Not bad enough to report/change room, but mentioning to give a balanced review.) Nice down pillows, with options to request other styles of pillow if needed. Weight of the duvet was just right for us. Excellent bathroom with a multi-function shower and storage shelves. Double sink also a bonus.

++Pool area: Well-kept, in gorgeous garden grounds, with a good number of sun beds.

++Spa area: Spent most of our pool time in the "adults-only" spa pool area. Good number of sun beds, only had one day where there were none available in the early afternoon. As a work-around, the spa team offered up foam mats to put on the grass lawn under the palm trees. This was a good alternative, and two sun beds were available within about 30 minutes. The thermal circuit is very good (and clean!), and we enjoyed the tea and fruit refreshments. Had a "sports massage" with Anne Marie, which was quite good and sorted out some sore spots. Even if you do not schedule a treatment, it is well worth exploring the spa public areas.

++Tennis courts/coaching: The two courts are "carpet" style, and maintained with the correct amount of sand so not too slippery for play. They are starting to wear in a few places, such as the centre of the service lines, but this did not affect play. We had coaching/practice drills with Marcus and with Maria, and enjoyed our sessions. (We brought our own rackets, so not sure if the hotel or the coaches have any available to borrow.)

++Bar: There was nightly entertainment of duos/small groups singing light "classics". As we were always tired from a day out exploring, we didn't stop in. Suspect this musical style would mostly appeal to an older clientele... but it did fit into the general "traditional" style/feel to the hotel. (For example, having a DJ playing top hip-hop/trance chart music in the bar would be totally out of context and wouldn't work unless the ground-floor area was redecorated.)

++General public areas: Some have reported this hotel to be tired. Didn't notice anything that was clearly worn out in the areas we frequented, however the overall style of the hotel decor in the lobby/bar is "classic old-school European hotel", and not the modern "hip/funky" style that some hotel chains are taking on these days. Stairway carpets were not stained/threadbare, chair upholstery was clean and not damaged, etc.... so I think it is a matter of personal preference.

++Surrounding area: There are restaurants/shops immediately outside of the hotel, and the promenade/casino area of Puerto de la Cruz is a 15-minute walk downhill (about 20 mins uphill due to the stairs combined with a big dinner). Taxi would be 5 Eur each way, we heard. Do recommend hiring a car and driving up Mt Tiede and exploring the surrounding areas. Bus service is also available just outside of the hotel grounds.

++Will we return?: Yes please!

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have views over the resort's trees, but a floor 2 room still had a nice view...

We have just returned from our first visit to this hotel after having read its glowing reviews on tripadvisor which were almost all deserved. Our room and bathroom were large, comfortable, quiet and well-equipped. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The gardens and pool were beautiful, most of the staff very helpful and friendly and the spa was amazing. The hotel has a free shuttle service to the town centre which is a nice touch, although this does not run on Saturday afternoons, Sundays or evenings (last shuttle into town is at 6.40 pm and last return journey is at 7.30). A one way trip by taxi is only about 3.5 euros. The downhill walk into the town takes about 15 minutes and is very pleasant. The uphill return journey is a bit of a climb, but wasn't as bad as we'd expected after reading some of the other reports! The town (especially the old part) is lovely and full of character and wasn't particularly busy though I suspect it would be much busier and therefore less pleasant at the height of the tourist season. It was my birthday during our stay and we were given a half bottle of cava and chocolate cake two days beforehand and then again on my birthday itself (I suspect the second gift might have been as an extra apology for a complaint we made - see later in this review) which was a lovely surprise. We enjoyed the welcome drinks party by the pool half way through our stay which was also a nice touch and made a really good start to the evening. Our only complaint (and this was a major one) is that on our second night the hotel was hosting a wedding party. There was very loud music until 2 am and noise from the wedding guests for at least another hour after that. This meant that we were unable to sleep and was unacceptable. We spoke to the manager about this the following morning. (We were not the only ones to complain and I suspect there were many more who had a disturbed night's sleep but who, in true British fashion, did not mention it to the management!) The manager dealt with us very well, was most apologetic and gave us vouchers for two free meals for two at the hotel. He told us that wedding parties were usually held in a different part of the hotel but he was unable to reassure us that the hotel would never again hold a late party in the same part of the hotel and so my advice would be to check whether any late night events are to be held in the hotel during your stay and, if so, in which part of the hotel. We ate in the hotel's Thai restaurant once and thought the food very good, although the restaurant was a little formal with no atmosphere, the wine list expensive compared with everywhere else we ate and the manager not particularly welcoming. We heard a similar complaint about the hotel's Italian restaurant and so did not take advantage of our second free meal, preferring to eat in the town itself. (We spoke to one elderly lady who had been going to the hotel for many years, was not very mobile and was travelling on her own. She had gone to the Italian restaurant on her first night, was extremely disappointed with the food, atmosphere and service - she felt that she was ignored by the young female manager for fifteen minutes and that the staff made no effort to make any kind of small talk with her or to make her feel welcome - and so, not being very mobile and not being able to easily get into town, she decided to eat at the Magnolia restaurant (apparently very good although we did not try it) across the street from the hotel for the rest of her stay rather than return to the Italian restaurant or try the hotel's Thai restaurant. (I would recommend the Tucan restaurant which is a five minute walk from the hotel, Los Gemelos and Mil Sabores restaurants in the old town or even the cheap and cheerful Italian restaurant across the road from the hotel which is ideal for a pizza/pasta if you arrive late and are too tired to go into town on your first night.)
Other minor suggestions/gripes are that there should be a few more staff available at breakfast to clear tables and serve tea and coffee as it was sometimes difficult to attract the attention of a server/find a free table. They should also know that most British people like tea with cold milk and so bring this with the tea or at least check if you want it. The cold milk sometimes did not appear, despite being requested twice on one morning. Perhaps the hotel could consider having small jugs of milk available which the guests could collect from the buffet themselves? Our bathroom had a vase with a lovely rose in it. The rose was removed on our fifth day (still in perfect condition) and not replaced. The maid did not always replace the two free small bottles of mineral water in the bathroom and our towels were not replaced on our last full day. These are all minor things and did not affect the enjoyment of our stay in any way, but as the hotel prides itself on its service and claims to be one of the leading hotels of the world, a little more attention to detail would be good.

Room Tip: I'm sure all are good but check whether any noisy parties are to be held during your stay!

This is rated as "One of the Leading Hotels of the World" - it is! Very well maintained with fine internal decor, immaculate grounds and gardens, and friendly and attentive staff. Five star service and attention to detail in every aspect of the hotel, spa and all other facilities. If you appreciate service standards at their very best you will enjoy Hotel Botanico and the Oriental Spa and the beautiful gardens. This was our first visit but we will certainly be back.

Room Tip: Difficult choice a view over the ocean or the gardens, neither will disappoint.

I returned for a visit to the Botanico and felt that this hotel not only kept its standards but improved the Spa area and the rooms to an incredible standard.
The beautiful grounds, lovely pools and outdoor restaurant are still there and as good as ever; again the friendly staff makes you feel instantly at home. A perfect place for rest and relaxation with the added bonus of the Oriental Spa which is just out of this world - and for hotel guests only. The treatments and facilities have been extended with further dedicated rooms.
With the wonderful position overlooking Porto de la Cruz, the Botancial Gardens nearby and a free shuttle bus to get you around and enjoy real Tenerife hospitality it is a hotel which can only be highly recommended - even with children due to their connection with the Loro Parque.

Room Tip: A room looking up to Mount Tiede is lovely

Very clean well furnished room. Excellent view over the coast and Spa gardens. Some of the most beautiful (if not 'the' most beautiful) hotel garden I have been in. Spa was excellent.

Staff were very attentive and helpful. As in keeping with other reviews, some tried furnishings in the public areas but nothing that would detract from the overall experience.

Lunch in the garden was good, but not excellent for the price. The maintenance staff keep the grounds and building in excellent condition.

The location is great if you want peace (we did), but it is quite a walk from the coast, the taxi is about 3.50 to 4.00 euros to the town centre.

Overall, an excellent hotel worthy of its 5 stars.

Room Tip: Any room would have a great view. Though the rooms overlooking the Spa have a wonderful garden view...
