“Criticism”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

Just returned from a weeks stay. Generally pleased with El Tope given the cost of this hotel accommodation in a TUI Thomson booking. Room, staff, food, location etc etc are fine though the room safe charge is rather excesive. As like other tripadviser ratings one could always pick on things but I do not want to join in that except for one thing that is important to me.
The El Tope wifi connection is not just poor it is terrible. What do I mean? Well initially it seem good in that as a resident you ask for an access code and are given a special personal one that lasts for 24 hours but then try to use it. It worked in our room occasionally, no that is the wrong word, it hardly ever worked except early mornings but then so slow my ipad went to sleep mode. To read emails, news, access google I had to go to the ground floor, no I mean the basement and sit patiently in the corner and wait. wait, wait and if you are lucky and that is not every day then eventually you may get something. I ended up walking down to McDonalds café where you can get instant free wifi more than once.
El Tope you need to do something particularly as I have stayed in other Puerto hotels over recent years and none are as bad as you concerning wifi access.

Location excellent for us-there is a hill to climb from town centre which could be difficult for some, but the views are excellent.
We had a beautiful room on the 3rd floor with sea views and mountain view ( Teide).
The staff were so friendly, breakfast was excellent. We were on a bed and breakfast regime,,.
Beds very comfortable, bathroom super, room spacious.
TV sufficient- we were not there to watch television......
Walk to town to some excellent restaurants in the evening.
This hotel isexcellent value.

We chose El Tope hotel because it was near enough to walk into the centre of Puerto de la Cruz (as long as you don't have mobility problems) but far enough away from the hustle and bustle. Also we had a fabulous deal as we only booked a few days beforehand.
I think our floor had just been refurbished. It was immaculate and very clean. The staff were always helpful. There was free parking if there were spaces left, and also free wifi in your room, but you had to keep signing in every time you used it, which was fine. So those were two pluses for the hotel. We akso had a lovely sea view (we were on third floor). We opted to go for half board as it was only a little more than for b & b (bear in mind we only paid a fraction of the normal price). The food was buffet style, which is normal for the area. Although there was a good variety, I couldn't help comparing it to similar hotels we'd been to before. The quality and variety could have been better, but hey, considering what we paid, it was good. Would recommend the hotel to others. Oh, they also had a bowl of fruit and bottle of water in your room on arrival! Never had that before, so that was a nice touch.

Nice hotel with nice view from the balcony to Teide mountain and to the sea. Perfect breakfast and dinner service. Some old rooms and some new rooms. Ok pool and spa area. Close to the shopping center and city centre.

This could be a lovely hotel but we feel at the present time the staff are fighting a losing battle to keep all the guests happy.

On arriving we were not informed that major refurbishment was taking place. Even Thomson who we booked through did not advise us of this fact. We had made a reservation for 1 month's stay in this hotel, during which time the upheaval was continuous from 0800 - 1830 hours Monday to Friday and also on a Saturday morning. There just never seemed to be any let up,
Also at very short notice we would have a letter put under the door of our room advising us that the water would be cut off and often the period of time stated on this letter was exceeded. We feel that it was the fantastic staff, especially in the Restaurant, namely Santiago, Pablo and the other waiters that kept this hotel going. They were all so friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them. 2 floors were being refurbished, what about the rest of the hotel, when is this going to take place? We would go back again only if we could be guaranteed we would be offered one of the refurbished rooms.

Room Tip: If you are going to book please ask for a newly refurbished room. If NOT I think that the other sha...

The hotel is high above the town centre of Puerto de la Cruz and you get wonderful views from the 1st floor up. It’s a steep slope or alternatively steps to get into town from the hotel, which may cause problems if you have mobility issues.

The helpful and friendly staff really make the hotel. I emailed the hotel before we travelled to get an extra single room, as Thomson only allowed us to book one room for our party of 3 adults – no problem: we got a large family room on the first floor and an extra single room on the 4th floor which, although it had no balcony, had two large picture windows, one of which could be opened (we paid for this on arrival). The housekeeping staff are friendly and do an excellent job; when one of us was ill for a day, they were sympathetic and happy to clean around us. The waiters and chefs in the restaurant are also friendly.

The only occasion when service was less than ideal was when our air conditioning failed, blowing warm air – we reported it three times and it was two days after we first reported it before it was fixed. Each time I reported it, I was met with some disbelief, and had to explain the problem again.

Food hygiene standards appear to be high; I watched one of the chefs doing show cooking whilst waiting for my main course, and was reassured by his careful and consistent attention to hygiene, washing hands thoroughly between handling raw meat and serving cooked food. There is a very good variety of food options every night, and the show cooking is normally very tasty, though the buffet food is often not quite as good as individually prepared dishes would be. And some of the deserts, while they looked really good, were a bit disappointing.

Rooms are large and well furnished, with comfortable beds. Yes, the carpets in many of the rooms and public areas were rather worn, but they were well cleaned in the rooms. The 2nd and 3rd floor rooms were being refurbished while we were there, creating a lot of dust temporarily in the stair well / by the lifts, but going forward, I’d expect the hotel to look a lot smarter than in the recent past. There are fridges in the rooms, which are available for guests to use, but you need to be aware that all electricity is switched off when you leave your room and take the key card out of the slot by the door: the fridge still keeps the odd food item cool enough, but this may be insufficient if you have medicines which need to be kept below 5 deg C - let the hotel know if this is the case. One simple improvement the hotel could make: please provide softer toilet paper in the rooms, it will add a feeling of luxury appropriate to a 4* hotel of the standard of the El Tope.

Room Tip: All rooms on and above the first floor have good views. The largest rooms are on the first floor, t...

My husband and I have just spent a wonderful week at el Tope. I have nothing but good comments about this lovely traditional hotel. If you appreciate an ultra modern high rise hotel this is not the one for you. We arrived at 2300 hours and were not expecting any service in the hotel other than to be shown straight to our room. The huge arrangement of roses in the reception area is stunning. Much to our surprise and pleasure there was an individual table set in the dining room for us even at this late hour. There were plates of salad, fruit, bread and soft drinks on our table. We found the reception staff, the dining room and bar staff and the people who looked after our room very polite, smart, helpful and friendly. There was a great selection of food which we enjoyed immensely and, judging by their heaped platefuls, so did the other guests.

Our room (two floors below reception) was spacious, clean and bright. The balcony was large and had a super view towards the sea but we could also look down upon the flowering poinsettia tree and other amazing shrubs. From the dining room there is a stunning view towards the Jardines de Orchideas at Sitio Litre with its beautiful old house and of course Teide. El Tope is a lovely traditional hotel with character. The entertainment in the evening was varied and excellent. The flamenco dancing was outstanding, the birds of prey show was very entertaining and we also enjoyed the classical pianist another evening. Most of all el Sabor de Canaria band were fantastic, great fun and terrific music.

There are fabulous places to visit in and around Puerto de la Cruz. We hired a car for three days and were fortunate to be able to find a space in the hotel car park at the end of each day. The car was booked via hotel reception, easy and good value. The Botanic Gardens, Sitio Litre and Loro Parque are marvellous. We would go back to Puerto de la Cruz and to el Tope and would certainly recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Our room was two floors below reception (not the lowest floor) but we had a great view as the hotel...
