We arrived full of expectation based on the great reviews the hotel received on trip advisor. As our arrival was approximately 11pm, we had missed the evening meal, so we arrived to find a nice platter of meat, cheese and salad in the room. It is geared towards the meat eater, so be warned if you are vegetarian - but the decent sized salad should be enough to fill your appetite.
We had a feature view, which we were not sure what to expect, but managed a fantastic view of the sea, some of the town and the cliffs in the distance. Looking around the hotel The room was of good size and comfortable. The TV was basic and had BBC 1, 2 and ITV as well as a news channel, amongst a whole host of other European channels. This is not a problem as mentioned by other users, the rest of the hotel, resort and island offers so much that TV shouldn't really feature highly on your to do list!
Breakfast was served 7:30-10:30 and had a wide range to cater for most tastes, with a chef cooking fresh fried eggs and pancakes for those who wanted them. Dinner was served between 6:30-9:30, which also meant that we didn't feel restricted to come back at a set time. The waiting staff are friendly, polite and helpful and they treated us all as individuals.
The pool is good, with a more-than-happy-to-help lifeguard helps set you up for your pool with sun lounger covers, umbrella and towels. He is very courteous. The bar is reasonably priced for a hotel bar and the staff are happy to then serve your drink at your sun lounger. There is a very wide selection of drinks.
The location, as people have stated, is on a hill, meaning lots of steps (of which runs by an excursion company at the base of the steps, with a quite persistent rep that we found quite rude when we said we would rather purchase tickets to Loro Parque on the gate) or the slope that seems to be easier to use to go down to the town. This cannot be helped as the area is hilly and you get used to it before long. At the base of the steps is a mini shopping mall, with supermarket and small outlets.
Finally, I would like to say that age range of guests is varied, with majority being geared towards the older generations, although as a young couple ourselves we didn't feel like we were the odd ones out. There were quite a few young couples there at time of our stay, but few families with young children.
We really enjoyed our stay at the El Tope and would definitely come back here in the future. As for recommending it? We already have and my girlfriend's parents are on their way as I write this! Thank you El Tope.
