“Old fashioned but fantastic suite and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

I stayed in Suite 106 for 2 weeks. Great views or Puerto de la Cruz and Mount Teide. Very comfortable & well appointed suite.

The staff was friendly and helpful.

The food was ok but got a bit boring after 2 weeks.

I guess any review of the El Tope has to be put in the context of the price you are paying and for most people what you get for what you pay the tour operator (about 75 British Pounds or 60 Euro per night half board) is excellent value for money.
Yes it is a full service 4 star hotel, room service, gym, pool, large public areas etc, etc.
It's not the newest hotel but by en large its well maintained and kept very clean.
When we were there 95% of guests were couples and the majority of those over 50 and what you get is very much attuned to that clientelle.
If you are impressed by ice sculptures, like to show of your knowledge on a long wine list, show off your designer gear or want a romantic candeliit dinner for two this is not for you. The clientelle here would probably roll their eyes at that kind of poser.
Similarly its not a place for kids.
The food is straight forward, not ambitious and the breakfast options predictable but it's good honest food with something for everyone, certainly little was left by diners.
The rooms are quite spacious. We had a front of hotel sea view room on the 3rd floor. Some of the comments here about you must upgrade to such a room is overdone in my opinion. Your view is about 600 yards over the top of a shopping centre to the sea, partially obscured by sea front hotels.
Air conditioning is hotel controlled, never saw the maid but could not fault the cleaning. Plenty of hot water, bath as well as shower.
I must say the much commented steps down to the town seem to me exaggerated, you would have to be in very bad shape for this to be an issue. There is a road that runs parrallel to the steps which is easier. To give you and idea we were on the 3rd floor which was at the same height as the 12th fllor of a similar hotel by the beach in front. There are 2 large supermarkets also at the foot of the hill.
About 100 yards away the other way is a bus stop for the local buses going to the norh of the island and up the Oratava Valley, even a daily bus to Mount teide. For buses to the south of the island its a 10/15 minute walk to the bus station.
The pool is not the largest and the sunbathing area not much bigger but never seemed that busy.

In this age where the headline price is often supplemented by supplemental charges hard to budget for in advance you might find the following helpfull.

Free WiFi - Very good, even on your balcony
Health Club, Gym - 5 Euro a session, poor gym equipment you might grumble at if free
Room Safe - 2.50 Euro per night, but very large and electronic key pad type
Fridge = Yes and empty for you to use as you please.
Kettle, Tea and Coffee - 2 Euro per day (you get this free with the suites)
Bottle Of Wine in restaurant - about 10 Euro (lmited range, nearly all local house wines. Top of the range = Mateus Rose!
Water, Beer, Soft Drinks - About 2 Euro in Restaurant.

No unexpected extras added to bill on checking out and they got the bill right first time.

All in all an excellent experience, I will almost certainly return.

The previous reviewers have said it all. An excellent hotel. Food adequate and well presented. The pool man is especially competent in caring for guests. Nothing too much trouble. Pool area quiet and except for one [german of course] morning no towels on sunbeds. The location of the hotel on the hillside made use of the plentiful supply of taxis - usually 3.55 Euros from town and well worth it.We [my wife and I] had a fourth floor superior room and it ranked as one of the best we have ever stayed in. The room maid was a delight. Competent and thorough in her cleaning routine. As ever when we visited Puerto we visited Molly Malones Irish bar and found it as good as when we first visited some 17 tears ago. Des Reid - the owner is a fine singer who manages to remember visitor names and encourages guest singers Will probably revisit soon.

Room Tip: Well worth the extra to have a high floor superior room. Spacious double balcony with sea and mounta...

The El Tope is could be best described as an elderly matron of a hotel ageing gracefully. A little shabby here and there, particularly the carpets on the landings and the decor of the rooms, but scrupulously clean in all areas. The housekeeping in the bedrooms and bathooms was excellent, as good as any hotel in which we have stayed. The food was good and varied at both breakfast and dinner buffets, tables being cleared promptly even when it was busy. Cloth napkins at breakfast, most other four star hotels have resorted to paper ! Table linen was changed between each guest using the table. The plates for hot food could have been hotter but this is a common fault in many Spanish hotels. The standard of hygiene was good and all the food was well described on the cards above the buffet.

The pool area was compact but never crowded also well looked after by the pool attendant who put up the umberellas and placed the sun bed mattress for every guest. He also made sure none of his clients were not getting too burned by coming around periodically to re-position the umberellas ! There was an efficient pool towel service. Pool hygiene and cleanliness was good, samples taken regularly and measured chemicals being added together with regular "hoovering" of the pool bottom. This is not always the case at some hotels.

The entertainment was negligible, thankfully, a duo or a solo artist playing unobtrusively in the bar or pool area some nights. This of course would not suit everyone but it was also nice to go down into the town and enjoy the very varied and good street entertainment and artists etc.

The El Tope is on top of steep hill with a lot of steps, but we quite enjoyed the challenge of mountaineering back and forth. If you were less mobile a taxi was only four to five euro's. The Botanical Gardens and the Sitrio Litre orchid gardens are also within walking distance and well worth a visit.

We visited this hotel some ten or so years ago when it was part of the Thomson Gold brochure, but think it was better this second time around. On this visit we had a superior room which was larger with a furnished patio to the front of the hotel, but on reflection a mountain view (rear) standard room gets the evening sun and sunset would have been a better and less costly option for us. The air conditioning units were a little geriatric, noisy and wheezy but being so high up the hillside a pleasant breeze through an open window was more acceptable at night even if the temperature was in the upper 20's.

All the staff without exception were pleasant, well trained in their duties and efficient. Well done El Tope we will return.

Room Tip: Rear mountain view rooms get the evening sun

Have stayed in many of the hotels in Puerto and this is regarded as one of the better ones. The location isn't ideal, being halfway between the town and the tourist area of La Paz. I found the staff quite unfriendly. For example, when I arrived and parked the car, a porter came out and was quite rude asking if I was resident then telling me there wasn't any space available as other regular guests needed the spaces! Also found the restaurant staff had bad attitudes. If they recognized you as a regular guest you were treated well but if your face was new you were ignored. Facilities and rooms need updating. Basically, if your a regular visitor then you probably love this hotel. If youre new to the resort then you can do better elsewhere!

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra for room with a view of the mountain.

On arrival at the hotel the first impressions were good. Check in was efficient and our rooms were ready so luggage was left in room and we went straight down to the pool area. The pool was rather small and the sunbeds a bit grubby however the pool staff were very efficient and attentive. A small deposit is required if you wish to hire towels.
On return to our rooms to unpack, i feel that its unacceptable to charge 17.5 euroes to hire the safety deposit box. Its the first hotel i've stayed in to have that kind of penny pinching policy.
The room itself was spacious and comfortable with a huge balcony giving both sea and Mount Teide views from the 7th floor position.
The restaurant throughout was a little shambolic during dinner with the waiters clearly not paying attention to any form of customer service and food was ok but the hot food was never hot and the plates were always cold. Desserts were frankly a mix of bland mousses, tinned fruit and near melted ice cream. All of the food was from a buffet which was topped up regularly throughout.
Breakfast service was somewhat better but the selection left a little to be desired and again the hot food was cold and the fruit juices were either squash or liquidised tinned fruit.
The best service recieved during the whole stay came courtesy of the bar staff and pool staff, always polite, efficient and attentive.
The so called entertainment consisted of an organ player most nights and a vocalist crooner and always finished by 10.30-11.00pm.
I was a bit put out that my room never seemed to be hoovered and my bedding never got changed in the whole 7 days of my stay, not very 4 star service.
All in all a dissapointing stay let down mainly by poor restaurant service, poor food (rarely if at all hot), poor housekeeping and slightly dated room/decor and poor entertainment.
As a first impression of holidaying in Tenerife i think this hotel lets it down on nearly all the key areas which is a shame because Puerto De La Cruz is a nice resort but don't go if you want wall to wall sunshine. The weather is generally cloudy with sunny outbreaks. The south of the island is the place to go it seems for sunshine.
Would i stay at the El Tope again? sadly not. More 2-3 star than 4 star.

Room Tip: choose a top floor room with Mount Teidi views and sea views. also quieter on higher floors.
