“Don't let the star rating fool you.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013 via mobile

A 3 star but truly a really good one! Perfect location, immaculatly clean and full of old Spanish charm. Rooms are very comfortable and it is well worth paying the little extra for a balcony room. Rear rooms have the Atlantic as the back drop and front facing rooms have the local church and square. Higher rooms are the best at the back but makes little difference at the front. Breakfast is adequate for a 3 star and all the staff are really friendly and helpful. We stayed 3 very comfortable nights. You need to note there is no parking and the nearest parking (under the sea facing square) is expensive. Suitable to unload and take bags into the hotel but not longer term. However there is ample free parking a short walk away and reception will give directions. The free parking is not too difficult to find and well worth the short walk it for a stay in this little (historical 1742) gem.

We first stayed here in May of last year, bed and breakfast. We couldn't fault the location, it was everything we hoped it would be. This time we booked directly with the hotel, which was very easy. We also requested the same room as last year because we knew it was quiet, and had a terrace directly out to the swimming pool.

This year we stayed half board, and were very pleased with the quality of the evening meals. We tried a few different things that we had not had before. The soups were reliably good, the tilapia was excellent. There was always enough to choose from to find something that appealed.

On the day of departure there was a problem with the computer which meant we couldn't pay by credit card. The staff, and the manager, were very helpful and explained the situation clearly and with many apologies. We were able to settle the bill in cash so at the end of the day it wasn't a problem, but it was the only slight niggle in a 7 night stay.

We will be back, hopefully later this year.

Room Tip: Room 42 has a terrace which opens directly onto the swimming pool and has lovely views

The Monopol is a charming old World gem of a place right in the heart of the lovely seaside town of Puerto De La Cruz in the north of Tenerife. Run by the same family for 75 years, personal, friendly service, combined with a homely atmosphere and lovely old architecture makes for a very relaxing ambience. Step outside and you can wander through the old streets and leafy plazas, full of interesting shops, cafes-bars and great value restaurants. While the emphasis is on old world charm the modern facilities include a heated outdoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi. The breakfast buffet is good and there is a wide choice of excellent value in outdoor dining in the atmospheric old town.
The most amazing thing however is the price. We payed just 20e B&B a few weeks ago! Excellent value!

Room Tip: Some have sea views and a couple have balconies or terraces.

I have been visiting this hotel for the last ten years and love it. A nice three star with friendly staff. But, while the food here has been OK I have seen it slowly decline to the point where on my last visit the dinner was worse than prison food. I can recommend the Monopol but there is lots of quality restaurants around, at good prices so go B'n'B.

Room Tip: I like to be in the front but it can sometimes be noisy but there are some rooms by the pool with s...

I have reviewed this hotel already on 01 Dec 2011 but since then just returned from my 5th visit.

I am single traveller and the only thing I have changed is that on further 4 occasions I have booked a double room for single occupancy which makes a l l the difference for just 5 Euros more per night (based on B&B). Large rooms with balcony and basically everything you could wish for. This time I even got my "dream room" 218 which is built like a little bungalow with your own little patio on a terrace overlooking pool and sea.

Rooms were well cleaned every day and staff was very helpful and friendly. That said: during all visits you meet the same staff which should tell you something as they all seem to enjoy working there. All rooms offer the same facilities but for sea view and noise levels you should ask for a room facing the back of the hotel.

Please also note single rooms are of quite good standard but do not have balcony and most of them face a small dark alley way with not much light. So double as single pays off quite a bit!

I generally book B&B only, so can't really comment on half board quality.

On Mondays the manager and owner invites to a welcome drink where returning guests receive a little present. Now, I got a nice bottle of wine for my 5th visit but "was beaten" by someone who returned for the 28th time. Hardly, if there would have been anything wrong with this place?

Not much else to add to my previous review and comments from other visitors. This is a very well looked after family run hotel with long tradition in ideal location. For 3 star you can hardly do better! And for noise: you are in a top central location, so don't expect no noise - I did not find this disturbing in any way.

This place has become "second home" and I will certainly return end of year.

Room Tip: Ask for 218 or 219 or at least have a look at them. Apart from that the rooms facing the back have a...

We have just returned from a week at Hotel Monopol. The hotel is in a beautiful location in the centre of the lovely resort of Puerto de La Cruz, just opposite the church with bells ringing out. Lots of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby and bus station a ten minute walk from hotel. The only downside to our stay was the food in dining room: breakfast was same every day: luke warm tea, coffee, eggs, etc with no variety. Evening meal consisted of plain fish, few vegs and stew type meat. Only choice for vegetarian was pasta with sauce. Maybe improve food and worry less about nice flowers at front of hotel. We would return to hotel but would not eat there.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing square and church with balcony. Nice to sit and watch the crowds go by and list...
