“Hotel Monopol, Puerto De La Cuz, Tenerife”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

The Monopol is a charming old World gem of a place right in the heart of the lovely seaside town of Puerto De La Cruz in the north of Tenerife. Run by the same family for 75 years, personal, friendly service, combined with a homely atmosphere and lovely old architecture makes for a very relaxing ambience. Step outside and you can wander through the old streets and leafy plazas, full of interesting shops, cafes-bars and great value restaurants. While the emphasis is on old world charm the modern facilities include a heated outdoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi. The breakfast buffet is good and there is a wide choice of excellent value in outdoor dining in the atmospheric old town.
The most amazing thing however is the price. We payed just 20e B&B a few weeks ago! Excellent value!

Room Tip: Some have sea views and a couple have balconies or terraces.

I have been visiting this hotel for the last ten years and love it. A nice three star with friendly staff. But, while the food here has been OK I have seen it slowly decline to the point where on my last visit the dinner was worse than prison food. I can recommend the Monopol but there is lots of quality restaurants around, at good prices so go B'n'B.

Room Tip: I like to be in the front but it can sometimes be noisy but there are some rooms by the pool with s...

I have reviewed this hotel already on 01 Dec 2011 but since then just returned from my 5th visit.

I am single traveller and the only thing I have changed is that on further 4 occasions I have booked a double room for single occupancy which makes a l l the difference for just 5 Euros more per night (based on B&B). Large rooms with balcony and basically everything you could wish for. This time I even got my "dream room" 218 which is built like a little bungalow with your own little patio on a terrace overlooking pool and sea.

Rooms were well cleaned every day and staff was very helpful and friendly. That said: during all visits you meet the same staff which should tell you something as they all seem to enjoy working there. All rooms offer the same facilities but for sea view and noise levels you should ask for a room facing the back of the hotel.

Please also note single rooms are of quite good standard but do not have balcony and most of them face a small dark alley way with not much light. So double as single pays off quite a bit!

I generally book B&B only, so can't really comment on half board quality.

On Mondays the manager and owner invites to a welcome drink where returning guests receive a little present. Now, I got a nice bottle of wine for my 5th visit but "was beaten" by someone who returned for the 28th time. Hardly, if there would have been anything wrong with this place?

Not much else to add to my previous review and comments from other visitors. This is a very well looked after family run hotel with long tradition in ideal location. For 3 star you can hardly do better! And for noise: you are in a top central location, so don't expect no noise - I did not find this disturbing in any way.

This place has become "second home" and I will certainly return end of year.

Room Tip: Ask for 218 or 219 or at least have a look at them. Apart from that the rooms facing the back have a...

We have just returned from a week at Hotel Monopol. The hotel is in a beautiful location in the centre of the lovely resort of Puerto de La Cruz, just opposite the church with bells ringing out. Lots of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby and bus station a ten minute walk from hotel. The only downside to our stay was the food in dining room: breakfast was same every day: luke warm tea, coffee, eggs, etc with no variety. Evening meal consisted of plain fish, few vegs and stew type meat. Only choice for vegetarian was pasta with sauce. Maybe improve food and worry less about nice flowers at front of hotel. We would return to hotel but would not eat there.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing square and church with balcony. Nice to sit and watch the crowds go by and list...

I had been to Puerto de la Cruz on three previous occasions staying at different hotels but never the Monopol. I always thought, however, every time I passed this attractive and perfectly positioned hotel, that I must stay there one day. I have just returned with my wife from a week there and was not disappointed. The characterful interior is a delight with the galleried landings enabling a view down through the centre of the hotel to the tropical garden/lounge area below. This is a wi-fi zone so a great place to catch up with events elsewhere. The planting creates a calm relaxing ambience. The room was spacious, clean, well appointed and comfortable and the view, great. We only took breakfast but there was no shortage of choice. The dining area was also very attractive. Staff were friendly and helpful. As a bonus we met a lady in national dress with baskets full of hibiscus blooms laying them along the steps and around the downstairs interior. We later learned she was the owner and picks them every day from her own garden.

Room Tip: It's worth paying for a room with a balcony.

the hotel monopol is an old hotel, full of character, but needs updating in some areas.the staff were all very friendly and helpful.the main lounge area was lovely and had fresh flowers everyday.the views from the galleried landings was lovely.our room a twin with ensuite and balcony overlooked the pool and the sea and though old fashioned was quite nice.we were glad there was a ceiling fan,a fridge and hairdryer in the room.the beds were comfortable.there were 2 english channels on the t.v.
we wished we had opted for bed and breakfast instead of half board as the food was poor.buffet style for lunch and dinner.not very hot and poor quality.the fruit salad at breakfast consisted of tinned fruit cocktail and chunks of apple with core left in-yuk.there is fresh fruit in abundance on tenerife why don't they use it?there was no lovely fresh baquettes only sliced cotton wool type bread for toasting.
we had stayed in los cristianos for 3 weeks and came here for an extra 3 days.we enjoyed our stay, but were disappointed with the weather.the weather in the south was fantastic for 3 weeks, cool, windy and sea mist for last 3-a pity.visited orotava-well worth a visit

tep back into the last century with all the great ambiance that they prided themselves on in those days. The entrance is lines by fresh blossom heads every day and on all or most of the antique objects on display from on old telephone exchange to a mangle or two should you wish to dry your clothes in a hurry. The main lobby is packed with greenery reaching right up the three stories of the building to the glass ceiling giving an outdoor feel right in the middle of town.
Our room was at the back and was perfect for the length of stay that my lady friend and I were there for. The maid service was very good indeed with one of the girls actually singing whilst working I had to applaud that, you do not fin that in UK anywhere now.
The dining room is in the basement and is well decorated and scrupulously clean with pleasant staff though pushed at times to clear tables because as everywhere there is a shortage of staff
due to the recession, with the lack of tourists times for hotels in the Canaries are getting hard, although I think that the Monopol will weather the storm.
There is no air conditioning but do not let that deter you it is not needed as the temp can be controlled by the use of the ceiling fan should you need it.
The food left a bit to be desired not in presentation or preparation but in diversity of dishes, nearly all were variations on a theme, however at times with the excellent canarian potatoes which are always a treat.
The only bad thing about the Monopol is that it is a public toilet for the tourists and locals together about 30 odd people used the conveniences whilst we were sat in the lobby talking to friends who live on the island it was they who pointed it out to us. Not good from the health of guests point of view at all.
All in all a pretty good hotel in the price range and we will be returning next year at the same time.
The bar is well stocked and obviously the best of Canarian wine had been picked as the taste and texture of the the red in particular was much improved from earlier years. However they still will not import good white wines, I cannot get into the taste of local white wines although my lady friend did enjoy a rose.
A very enjoyable Spring holiday.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked from open doorways in the mornings more or less the same and as our room was pe...
