If you think that you’ll spend lots of time in your hotel room when visiting Puerto de la Cruz and/or Tenerife, then the Hotel Tejuma will probably not meet your needs. If you plan to spend most of your time out and about, exploring the Island, or wandering the city, then the Hotel Tejuma is a perfect base.
Some travel websites such as this one list the Hotel Tejuma as an Inn rather than as an hotel and that’s a good indication that this is not a full service hotel. What it is, though, is pleasant, quiet, and slightly out off the beaten path. Room décor may be slightly dated but that’s not atypical for Puerto. The rooms are comfortable although the beds are small. My bathroom was clean and the water hot enough for showers. My balcony was small and it faced west so I never got the morning sun. But, if you plan to be out and about, that won’t be an issue.
The hotel didn’t offer breakfast but they had an arrangement with the Hotel Trianflor. It’s no more than 5 mins away, downhill on the way, but uphill on the way back. The Trianflor caters to tour group holidays which made me appreciate the contrast with the quiet 17-room Tejuma. Breakfasts were standard fare, and adequate, though the juice machine tended to run out so be careful with that.
I’ve read complaints about the fact that you have to climb a lot of steps to get to the Tejuma. True enough, but there is also a ramp, and you can always take an alternative street (no less steep, though). You have to face it, when in Puerto it’s rather hard to avoid steep streets and climbs. Other than that, the hotel is less than 10 mins from the Plaza del Charco - the heart of Puerto. It would take 20 mins to get to Playa Jardin or the Lago Martianez complex, though.
When driving, the Tejuma is not easy to find at first. Partly that’s because what looks like a street on some maps isn’t. It’s those steps. What is really inconvenient about the Tejuma is parking. There isn’t any. Be prepared to drive around in circles looking for a parking space and to walk a fair distance (1 km) from on street parking. To be fair to the Tejuma, there is a chronic lack of parking in Puerto de la Cruz, period.
Apart from parking, my only complaint about the Tejuma is that the walls are thin. Noise does travel. However, the hotel is small enough that this is rare and not really a problem.
When staying at the Tejuma, you’ll be given a key for the front door. You can then come and go as you please. The older man who looks after the front desk is not there all the time. I was lucky that he was there when I arrived. With my poor Spanish, I might have panicked had I arrived and found the place locked. I did hear some newly arrived guests banging loudly on the door late some nights. There are phone numbers posted and I believe that you don’t have to wait too long but its something to know about before arrival.
The man on the front desk has been described in other reviews as a sweetheart. I’d agree. He always wished me a friendly “good morning” or “good night” as I passed. You could almost see the mental processing as he lifted his head and thought: oh yes, this guest speaks English.
All told, I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Tejuma and would go back there again
