“Hotel Valle Mar-vellous”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

This is a charming hotel, in a lovely resort on a smashing island. The Valle Mar stands in a fantastic position, right on the pedestrianised promenade of Puerto de la Cruz and opposite the intriguing lidos of the Lagos Martianez, designed by the artistic genius Cesar Manrique. The five-storey Valle Mar is a traditional (some may say old fashioned) Canarian hotel. Our corner room on the first floor was oddly shaped but spacious and with a double aspect, sliding doors to the massive balcony + a large fixed window. As well as twin beds, it had a desk, table and two comfortable armchairs. The mattresses and pillows were too hard for our liking, but they always are in holiday hotels. The flat screen satellite TV has only one English-speaking channel, the dreadful BBC World News. There are loads of German-language stations for the predominantly-German guests. The irritation here is that most of the programmes are American movies or TV shows which are dubbed into German. If they were sub-titled, we poor Brits could enjoy them too! The bathroom was large but oddly-configured with a bath, washbasin,WC and bidet. The shower - plenty of hot water - was over the bath, not my preferred option. The decor throughout the room (indeed the whole hotel) was dark brown wood, not everyone's favourite, but we liked it. As with the rest of the hotel, our room was carpeted which is off-trend in 2013 but certainly keeps down the noise levels. The Valle Mar is the quietest holiday hotel we have stayed in during recent years, with little room-to-room sound transmission. We were a trifle worried that outside noise from the busy promenade would be a problem. But it wasn't. Puerto de la Cruz is not a party town. The hotel restaurant is on the first floor with terrific panoramic views over the sea, a really lovely space. The food - buffet style, of which I am not a fan - is varied, well cooked and of good quality. But, as is always the case, it can be repetitious for guests staying longer than a week. The standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel is exemplary. The staff are courteous, professional and efficient in all departments. My only gripe with the hotel is the swimming pool. It is on the roof - and is tiny. It has curious, sloping sides and a tricky ladder. As the pool is small, so is the surrounding sunbathing area. Inexplicably, the upper tier in the pool area was roped off while were there, so dozens of neatly-stacked sunbeds were out of bounds. There is also a sunbathing deck on the 3rd floor but beds and parasols were in short supply there, too. But, that problem apart, Valle Mar is a nice, friendly hotel. My wife and I loved it. Puerto de la Cruz is an interesting town - a good mix of holiday resort and an authentic working town. The promenade outside the Valle Mar leads to the Paseo de San Telmo, a pedestrians-only street, high above the Atlantic waves ceaslessly crashing on to the rocks, and through the town (again walkers only) to the Plaza del Charco, a tree-lined square surrounded by restaurants, bars and shops and the focal point for visitors and locals in the evenings and at weekends. There is a beach (Playa de Martinanez) of black volcanic sand within 100 metres of the hotel but it's scruffy and mainly for surfers. The best beaches (also black sand) are at the opposite end of the resort - Playa Jardin and Playa de Punta Brava. The main tourist attraction in the resort (indeed on the island) is Loro Parque, a cross between a zoo and a theme park. I normally hate this kind of thing but it's excellent. In the (very steep!) upper areas of the town, there are the more understated botanical gardens, orchid gardens and water gardens. All are well worth a visit. Unlike the grisly south of Tenerife (with the ghastly Blackpool-like resorts of Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos) where the 'countryside' has the appearance of a string of worked-out industrial quarries, the north (around Puerto de la Cruz) is lush and verdant. This was our first visit to Tenerife; it won't be our last.

We stayed during the first week of February 2013 - weather wise it is there winter too so a bit cold and windy on some days and a jacket was needed, on others it was sunny and warm. Hotel reception, waiter and cleaning services were excellent - they could not be more helpful. We stayed in a superior double room which I think is worth paying the extra for especially if, like me, you find you need to spend a bit of time working and need a good internet connection - that came free with the superior room. During the week we were there most hotel guests seemed to be retired germans and though conversation can be difficult without a shared fluent language we found guests to be pleasant and courteous.

The view over the lago and to the sea was fabulous and the variety of food at breakfast was very good in my experience of Spannish hotels at this star rating. There are also many good restaurants in the area.

There is a very good cafe next to the hotel called the Cafe de Paris. The coffee and cakes tasted delicious BUT the staff were grumpy and bad manered - to be fair to them I think there were far too few of them to properly look after so many occupied tables ...so they were always rushed off their feet and their frustration showed in poor, abrupt and slow service to the customers. A lesson there for the management if they read these webpages... as we did not go back despite enjoying the location and food.

Overall we had a really great week there and did many new things in exploring the island so we would recommend this hotel - it's location is excellent - and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: go for a superior room if you can afford too. the 4th & 5th floors will have the better sea view...

Having just returned from a 11 day stay at the Valle Mar there is not much to add to the last 3 reviews. We had marked out some local restauarnts prior to our stay in case we became bored with the hotel food but in view of the quality and variety of the food these were not needed. Coffee and tea were served at breakfast in individual pots which is a pleasant change from the ubiquitous machines. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful particularly when we had difficulty in contacting our taxi company to confirm the pick up time for our departure. A member of staff was also making a point of enquiring of guests early in their stay if they had any problems. On commenting that we felt our shower room was on the small side we were immediately offered another room. However it wasn't so small that we felt it worth the hassle of changing. Apparetly rooms that end in the number 5 have smaller shower rooms. This is certainly a hotel we would return to if the price is similar next year. I suspect a reason it dosn't enjoy a higher rating is the majority of the clientele are German who don't appear to post on this site.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms which end in the number 5

My husband and I have just spent a very enjoyable two weeks at the Valle Mar.

The location was second to none. The views over Puerto de La Cruz were wonderful and outside, on the promenade, there was a fantastic atmosphere with lively bars, restaurants and coffee shops and street musicians playing. The Lago Martianez was right across the promenade and it was only a short walk to the beach and to the taxi rank and not far to the main square.

Within the hotel the staff were excellent in the restaurant and in reception and the housekeeping staff were also excellent. I have to thank Andres in particular who very quickly found a doctor for me when my husband became ill late at night. He also took the time to speak to me in the morning and check that all was ok.

Our room was bright and spotlessly clean. The décor was plain but immaculate. We would, however, have liked a second comfortable armchair and an occasional table. The television was old and only had two English speaking channels.

The bathroom was a good size and again, was very clean.

The outdoor sundeck was lovely and had very comfortable furniture. It was kept very clean. In contrast, while the pool area was attractive and had spectacular views there were not enough sunbeds and the sunbed cushions were dirty. Some people reserved sunbeds with their towels early in the morning but didn’t come and sit on them until after midday and one man lay on three sunbeds stacked on top of each other. He also had a chair, an umbrella and a table. If everyone had just used the sunbeds as they needed them there would have been enough to go round. There was a lifeguard on duty but no-one kept control of the use of the sunbeds.

Inside the décor was a little tired. The stair carpet in particular was frayed but this was a minor complaint.

In the restaurant the breakfast was good.

At dinner the soups were good and the salads were wonderful. The main courses were of excellent quality and there was plenty of variety but they were never hot enough. The desserts were good.

At night there was always someone playing the keyboard very well and there was occasional entertainment in the bar or downstairs in the attached bar/ restaurant which was of a very high standard.

The hotel had no wi-fi.

Although I do have some criticisms, on balance the pros far outweigh the cons and I would have no hesitation in returning to the Valle Mar.

On reading this over, it sounds critical which was not my intention. I was trying to give a fair review. We did love the hotel and the staff were fantastic

This is a really friendly and well run hotel overlooking the Atlantic shore line just a few hundred metres from the old town of Puerto de la Cruz. We have always liked this hotel, having stayed several times in the last ten years, however our stay this time was after an interval of 6 years so we were somewhat apprehensive. We needn't have worried and if anything it has improved. It is a little old-fashioned and like Puerto it is not for those looking for a lively night scene. The hotel is favoured mainly by middle-aged to elderly couples, mostly German. We have found that the latter usually have a good taste in hotels, so if there are a lot of German guests then the hotel will be good. To compensate for the age of the guests there are many young staff and all are both professional and friendly. The restaurant only serves buffet meals and although there is a large choice it is typical, in our experience, of 4 star Spanish hotels that we have stayed in, with the food varying from good to average. It is worth booking half-board as it it very little more expensive than B&B. In our 11 night stay we ate out on four nights, twice at Regulo, which is a very good local restaurant. The rooms are traditionally furnished in dark wood and are very comfortable. However, for British guests, there is no kettle, so bring your own.

Room Tip: Ensure that you book a room on the upper floors, (3rd or 4th), away from the noise of the two local...

This hotel is in a wonderful location right in front of the promenade [no car traffic] next to the sea.
The hotel is very clean and all the staff are extremely helpful and kind. We had nice breakfasts,
buffet style, and brilliant buffet style evening meals, a very good variety of different dishes.
There is a very pretty smallish swimming pool next to the restaurant on the top floor, and there are
wonderful public swimming pools in beautifully designed gardens, palm trees and other
sub tropical plants, on the other side of the promenade, just by the sea. We certainly will use
this hotel again as we enjoyed our stay very much. i nearly forgot to say: the rooms are very
nice and spacious with bathroom, and they are also very clean with towels being changed
frequently. The town has a large number of shops all selling camera equipment, so I would think that a good deal can be gained in camera equipment purchase .

I have stayed a few nights at the Valle Mar in May, 2012. The hotel is mostly adequate, but the bathroom emitted a strong odor of sewer gas at times, and the plumbing occasionally makes huge banging noises. When I asked at the front desk to have a room change, I was denied. The man behind the desk first told me how bad a day he was having, then told me that the hotel was completely full (clearly, not true), and only offered to have a maid come and install a stick in the bathroom to cover up the smell. The maid said that the smell happened when the weather was hot and the sea backs up the sewer. Ha. Clearly the sewer lines are vented into the ceiling area of the bathroom. There is NO exhaust fan for the bathroom. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Try La Turquesa in Puerto de La Cruz. I have stayed there for more than a week with a totally pleasant experience.
