My husband and I were on the island of Lanzarote on November 6 and visited the Castillo San Jose (Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo). We were intrigued that an old fort was so formidably merged into a contemporary art museum. Admission is about 5Euros and we walked about at our leisure. The building and the artwork are interesting. Contemporary art pieces set again black volcanic blocks that make up the fort are an eye-catching and intellectually stirring mix! My husband is really not into art but he really enjoyed this place and took several pictures. There is the main room when you come in; this also has a couple side rooms with art as well. The white sculpted stairwell goes to the most amazing little restaurant bar with amazing views. (This place could easily be a prime spot for a wedding reception.) There is art and sculptures in the restaurant bar and outside the patio as well. Be sure to visit the bathrooms... they are absolutely gorgeous! I can't believe it but I actually took photos of the bathroom! Near the front entrance is a stairway that goes to a lower gallery as well. This room with white walls looks nothing like the traditional fort but artwork in this room is worth seeing. Before leaving don't forget to climb the stairs to the top of the fort - great views and photo ops of the port, ocean and area scenery.
Although there was a cruise ship in town, this place was not busy. We think this museum is a place more people need to know about. Cruise people: forget the walk to town to go shopping ... you need to stop here instead!
