This is the first time I've felt compelled to write a Tripadvisor review of my own. I took note of the varying reviews of this place but decided to book anyway - we'd got the flights anyway and this hotel seemed the best of the bunch. For the 70 euros a night, we were not disappointed.
The hotel is not five star, but could be so easily with a little work. One imagines when this place opened it was truly 'grand' .. the only but is they don't seem to have changed anything in the 15-20 years since they completed it.
The hotel features a wonderful heated pool covered by a glass solarium with a pool bar on the first floor next to a fantastic sun deck protected by glass windbreaks. Relaxed music plays throughout this area. It was sufficiently hot in December to sunbathe. The same floor features a spa - we booked this for 4pm - it costs 15 euros per person, and for this we had the place to ourselves. It was clean, everything worked - couldn't ask for more.
The rooms are huge. Considering the hotel was mostly empty it would have been nice to have been offered an upgrade, however you will be impressed with the size of the standard rooms. The amount of wood, marble indicates this place did not scrimp when setting itself up. The downside is that the linen is thin and the room was actually on the cold side. Amusingly, the front desk told us that the minibar in the room was free for the first night - then you find the contents are a couple of bottles of water and juice- still, nice touch - and a free drinks voucher for the bar is welcome.
The hotel has a bar on the 17th floor with the best views in Lanzarote, with impressive floor to ceiling windows, groovy decor and great custom furniture around the walls. They've added to this what can only be described as patio furniture - why? The bar features great decor and brilliant lighting, and has staff in bow ties - the furniture is so out of place! Still, the staff were fantastic and we had a lovely time here.
I've read mixed reviews about the breakfast. The breakfast room is wonderful, it's light, the linen is crisp, the settings are great, eggs are cooked to order. You will not find the two types of sausages at Holiday Inn but you will find freshly squeezed juice, a credible selection of cereals and fruit and eggs cooked to order. The coffee is excellent, the staff once again are fantastic.
The hotel has free wifi throughout which is generally usable. It seemed to work far better in the pool area and seems to depend how close you are to the repeaters - that said, it worked fine in our room.
The battery in our safe ran out whilst we were there. I am sure it would have been fixed if we'd bothered to complain. One of the halogens in our bathroom went whilst we were there - presumably housekeeping noticed this as it was fixed without a word from us.
The gym is interesting, cooled by the outside wind. It has a cobbled together collection of equipment which is all perfectly serviceable. It could do with a rack of weights. The running machine is facing the wrong way! Although you can see the fabulous views behind you, together with your panting self, in the floor to ceiling mirrors).
I read some moans about the 17th floor restaurant - I did look at the menu and it looked attractive and the prices weren't silly. This hotel is in easy distance of some great eateries (La Puntilla is a must) so we didn't actually eat there, but customers we could see from the bar seemed to enjoy the experience.
To improve, this hotel should pay more attention to the cleaning of it's glass walls, provide better bed linen and towels and replace the rug in the impressive reception. If you can live with this, get it booked because it's genuinely a very enjoyable place to stay in an unbeatable location.
