“A meatarian's dream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

This restaurant is Old Spain but Canarian style. There are few restaurants around like this any more so make the most of them. There is no luxury or pomposity here - it's all about feeding the customer well and at sensible prices. I'm so dissapointed that we didn't find this restaurant during our previous 2 visits to La Palma - We absolutely love it!! The restaurant is located on top of a steep hill overlooking Santa Cruz town next to a church. It's very rustic and has great atmosphere inside - usually full of locals coming for a feast. The menu revolves around various meats which are priced by the kilo.
We had a selection of starters - Chicharrones (Pork crackling rolled in Gofio), bread cooked in a wood fired oven with a fennel seed background flavour (really very good), 2 large grilled chiorizo sausages, Jamon Serrano with goat cheese and a bowl of thier red mojo sauce - hot. The portions were rather larger than we expected and top notch quality.
For main couse, If you want a small or large chop or steak then just ask. I asked the waiter what size the pork chops were and he just said normal. We had one pork chop each which was cut quite thick and nearly filled the dinner plate. My first thought was that it might be tough when cut that thick but not at all. It was tender, perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavour after being cooked over a wood fire. We had fries and a salad with it which were excellent. A glass of draft beer, a glass of local wine, a large bottle of water and coffee to finish. When I checked the bill, our 2 pork chops were a total of 0.8Kg (14 ounces each!!). The total bill 28Euro
Excellent food at a very reasonable price. We are booked to return in April 13 & I'm already thinking about the steak i'll be ordering.

“Typical local Canarian restaurant, simple meat-based menu, good quality and value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

This is in an attractive setting on a leafy square above Santa Cruz, next to an important church (where the festival virgin is kept). Bar Parrilla las Nieves caters very much for locals, as other reviewers have noted. We were the only non-Spanish diners, who included several children at 9 in the evening - there is even play equipment in the entrance. However we were treated well and enjoyed the non-tourist atmosphere. The menu is straightforward - just a choice of a wide range of meats, for which customers can specify accompaniments. We had pork steak and goat, both well cooked and in generous proportions. I must agree with the reviewer who pointed out that the map location is totally wrong - it is in the village of Las Nieves high above the town, not on Avenida Las Nieves in Santa Cruz.

“great value and an authentically local experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

There may well be other authentic Canarian restaurants on the island but this one has the advantage of being close to Santa Cruz. It was friendly, informal and full of locals at 3 in the afternoon.

The atmosphere could be described as lively. It would certainly not be suitable for a quiet romantic outing.

The quality of the food was excellent. In our case we had barbecued chorizo, barbecued pork fillet and mixed salad. The red house wine was strong and delicious.

The meal was good value for money, our bill came to less than 15 Euros for two.

“Worth the wait”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

We visited on a rowdy Sunday afternoon apparantly after the local football team had won a game. They were a bit noisy and drunk waiting for their table along with about 20 of their closest friends. This is a tiny little place and we nearly left, thinking it would be too much for us. The place was already full of locals and about 10 more waiting as well. We were the only Anglo tourists in sight. We had to wait about 30 minutes but. felt it was worth it to experience the true local atmosphere. You have to kind of barge in and go to the door to the kitchen to get your name on a list. There was no one keeping order so it was a bit chaotic. We enjoyed wandering around the lovely cobbled square and exploring the beautiful church which is worth a visit even if you don't go to Las Nieves to eat! We had one set meal with pork chops and one with pork steak. THe chops were the most tender and tasty - with two huge 3" thick chops plus potatoes (not so great) and salad along with soup. Also ordered bread and the local wine, which were wonderful. The pork steak was also huge, but a thin cut and very well done so not as tender; we ended up taking most of it away for a picnic the next day! No English spoken but we got by with a bit of basic Spanish and pointing at the menu (which was in English and German as well). The staff were competent, not particularly friendly, but still got the job done. A great experience and great for a late afternoon dinner. We got in just under the wire at 5 pm, and they never had a break before the ;7 pm official dinner started.

“Paradise for Meat Eaters, and excellent value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2010

Firstly location quoted is incorrect. It is 3kms out of town not 0.3 and it is situated in Las Nieves by the Church in a very pretty spot. The food is excellent, mainly meat and cooked on the barbecue. Value is excellent and the portions enormous. The wine list is extremely comprehensive and very reasonably priced.

Meat is priced by the kilogram and the pork chops I had were by far the best I have ever tasted. A must if you are staying in Santa Cruz de la Palma.
