This restaurant is Old Spain but Canarian style. There are few restaurants around like this any more so make the most of them. There is no luxury or pomposity here - it's all about feeding the customer well and at sensible prices. I'm so dissapointed that we didn't find this restaurant during our previous 2 visits to La Palma - We absolutely love it!! The restaurant is located on top of a steep hill overlooking Santa Cruz town next to a church. It's very rustic and has great atmosphere inside - usually full of locals coming for a feast. The menu revolves around various meats which are priced by the kilo.
We had a selection of starters - Chicharrones (Pork crackling rolled in Gofio), bread cooked in a wood fired oven with a fennel seed background flavour (really very good), 2 large grilled chiorizo sausages, Jamon Serrano with goat cheese and a bowl of thier red mojo sauce - hot. The portions were rather larger than we expected and top notch quality.
For main couse, If you want a small or large chop or steak then just ask. I asked the waiter what size the pork chops were and he just said normal. We had one pork chop each which was cut quite thick and nearly filled the dinner plate. My first thought was that it might be tough when cut that thick but not at all. It was tender, perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavour after being cooked over a wood fire. We had fries and a salad with it which were excellent. A glass of draft beer, a glass of local wine, a large bottle of water and coffee to finish. When I checked the bill, our 2 pork chops were a total of 0.8Kg (14 ounces each!!). The total bill 28Euro
Excellent food at a very reasonable price. We are booked to return in April 13 & I'm already thinking about the steak i'll be ordering.
