Good day. I have just come back from the Suite Princess. 6/6/09-13/6/09.

The hotel was about ¼ full. Recession? Booked with Portland Holidays online. Significant savings on Thomson site even though the same company.
Dress code casual. Read my Jandia Princess review.

Agree with many of the comments on previous review.

Sauna is acceptable with towels provided. Seemingly only used by a few people.

Gym is the usual rubbish that Princess Hotels turn out. I guess I will only see a good gym if I pay for it at a 5 star hotel. (Maybe a cruise).

Drinks: G and T = 6 Euros 20 cents, Large Beer 3 Euros. Coffee 2 euros Tea 1.9 euros.

Food Pizza for lunch 4.5 euros Club Sandwich 4.75 euros

Swimming pool is passable if you want a decent swim. Approximately 17 metres at its widest part. 2.16 to 2.36 metres deep for the main pool. Kids pool good.

The food is good standard A la Princess Hotels.
Waiting staff and all hotel employees are very welcoming and in my opinion are better than other Princess Hotels that I have stayed in.

The dining area was very quiet compared to the Fuerteventura Princess and Jandia princess. At those hotels the waiters seem so busy because of the number of people they cater for.
The coffee is from a dispenser rather than having your own on the table.

Puerto De Mogan is beautiful. The rep said that the day to be there was a Friday. Take no notice and go on the hotel courtesy bus 11:00am to 13:00 pick up.

We managed to find a circuit to walk/ jog. But what you will find is that the Suite Princess is in a bay and quite remote. There is no real place to walk because the roads are so busy. The bay is impressive one way or another. Stayed in 7002. Excellent view but room a bit tatty in places.

We did not hire a car because the roads out of Las Palmas seemed as busy as the M6. Nearly ½ million people live in the City.

We have been to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and now Gran Canatria. We would not choose GC ahead of the other two.

Having said that, the Suite Princess is in a lovely location. High cliffs. Hotel rises out of them and it seems like something out of a Thunderbirds set. Our room was in an ideal position although it would be interesting to be on Planta 9

We had the misfortune of going through Maspalomas on the way back to the airport. We feel lucky to have been in Playa Taurito because Maspalomas looks over populated with hotels.
By comparison Fuerteventura has just 90000 people.

We stayed here for a week from the end of May and considering it was half term, the hotel was less than half full, so there were plenty of sun beds to go around.
The bus transfer from the airport was 40 minutes-we travelled with Portland and had the same holiday as the Thomson Platinum travellers, but at a much better price.
The hotel sits on a small cove at the almost south western tip of the main highway. The roads are good, part motorway from the airport to rock hugging coastal roads with some stunning views. We had a top floor room on request as a 'quiet room', which it probably would have been had the decorators not been in at 8am in the mornings next door with a bloke who liked to do multiple bird impressions. He soon got the message!
Joking apart, the views from the upper floor are fabulous and most of the large balconys have a view across to Puerto Mogan, a small fishing port, with shops/banks/bars and some friendly locals.Tip-a taxi ride is about 5 euro's each way and worth a trip in the evenings if you want t have a bit of choice as to where to sit and drink. Playa Taurito has just one 'local' bar which is retro themed, popular but not overly busy.
There are a few shops and a small supermarket selling alchol, food and essentials. The bigger supermarkets in Puerto Mogan are cheaper and have a bigger range of items, but as the Hotel is half board, you need little other than cheaper drinks. A gin and tonic is 6.40 euro's and a beer 3.30. There are two happy hours from 12pm-1pm and 5pm-6pm where some drinks are half price, but not soft drinks!
Food-Plenty of it, but if there for two weeks it would be repetative, but there is a good choice of fresh meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. They did a cracking paella, but sadly only once and the fresh prawns were huge and delicious, but again only served up once.
Breakfasts are very good with loads of choice and on a number of mornings there was champagne (cava) which went down well with the griddled eggs and bacon.
The evening entertainment is 'interesting'. The resident band is husband and wife, he tries to sing whilst she dances and then she sings with the occasional loss of lyrics, which is, well, fun. They are really bad at times, which makes them fun to listen to and we had a great laugh.
The pool is actually two pools one heated and one probably not, but they are clean although one is very deep-beware.
Rooms are spacious, a little bit of privacy is available if your children are younger as the third bed is a double sofa and is screened off and off-set, so there is opportunity mum and dad!
Maid service daily. Fridge has to be rented. Drinks in the restaurant have to be signed for and paid at the end of the week, which is sometimes tempting to do if the exchange rate increases as it did for us by 5 cents over the week.
Overall, clean, very quiet. Nice beach, volcanic sand but great waves to have fun in.
Small antiquated gym (don't try the weights) Decent sauna, TV and games room and two decent lounges/bars with outside seating. We had a good time, a number of families with children in the below age 9 group, mostly UK residents, although a number of nationalities represented. Nice pleasant atmosphere, but would not rate 4 star platinum set against that being our normal baseline of accommodation.
Go Portland first and barter them down. Friendly staff all round and a couple of fun waiters who earned their tips as the bars closed by midnight.

Lovely and centrally located hotel in a very small and quiet resort. Plenty of activities (if you wanted them) in the hotel itself, but not a whole lot else outside the hotel. There is a public lido very close by with water slides etc, and scuba diving and water-sports on the beach.
The hotel staff are very professional - perfect English so no communication problems. Food was good - hot, fresh and plenty of it at the buffets, and a lunch restaurant if you need it.
Cleanliness was excellent.
The room size is an absolute plus-point. A bedroom area, plus large sitting room, large bathroom and massive balcony area. Plenty of storage and hanging space for all your stuff too. All have sea-views as the hotel is built into a cliff face so the back of the hotel is just the road-way in. Only CNN or equivalent English speaking channels on the TV.
The basic hotel cost does not include things like the fridge in your room, sunbeds on your balcony or your in-room safe - the policy seems to be 12Euro for any of these. We were able to book a late check-out without any drama (again at an additional cost).
Thompson Rep was not great, but kept telling us she was just new and very nervous.
Mainly Brits, German and Austrians staying - the British were polite and courteous towards each other and the staff - if someone is infront of you in the buffet, you wait your turn - apparently no one has told the Germans and Austrians this. And of course, despite there being mountains of sunbeds around the pools and terraces, there were about 20 towels "reserving" beds from 7.30am (in fact we noticed one couple putting their towls out after dinner in the evening!!!).
If you are after a peaceful week in the sun with a little water-sport activity (use Jerry in the Diving Centre - a great scuba tutor), the Suite Princess is perfect.

Very helpful reviews helped us choose this hotel for a week in April...most comments so far are spot on...i would add that for the £640 we paid (per person/half board) over the easter week, we thought was a good deal. There seems to be little mention of costs in the reviews but i think for us, given we'd paid more at other hotels for a similar week in the past...we did well.
Also...
The gym is poor...no running machine and very few weights
The food is no worse/better than all the other 4 star hotels we've stayed in in Gran Canaria
The entertainment is nothing you'd pay for although better than in other hotels on the island
Staff are friendly and seemed to be very good with any children
All rooms have a magnificent sea view.

If you read these reviews you will soon deduce that this is an excellent hotel all round. Certainly, we found most things exceeded our expectations. We agree with all the positives in the most recent reviews, so I’m not going to go over all those good bits again; what I will do is give you a few other points to consider.

Chose the time to go carefully. We arrived late March, the hotel was half full, mostly with elderly Italians, lovely people, although they all seem to speak at once! This suited us fine – because oldies just don’t run riot. However, as we got close to Easter the British started to arrive, nearly all families with children and quite a few babies. Now we love kids; but other people’s kids can be a pain, especially when their parents don’t supervise them at all. It’s a poor indictment of this country and sets a bad example. One little gang thought it OK to soak us on our loungers and use a pneumatic water rifle! Another lad enjoyed flying through the piano bar on roller shoes! Sound like a right old grump don’t I? But, it’s just appalling that many British parents these days just don’t bring their kids up to show any consideration for others. If you want a quiet holiday, don’t go when the kids are out of school.

Try to get a high floor. High floors have the best views and are quieter. Email hotel with a request a week before going. (recepcion-suite@princess-hotels.com) we did and we got a room on the 8th floor which was magnificent. Also, tell them about birthdays and anniversaries. It was my wife’s birthday and we got a bottle in the room and free cocktails on her special day.

Extras in the room – It is a rip-off that they charge for the safe, fridge, kettle, minibar, sun beds on balcony and bathrobes; and those charges are per week. Tip – don’t ask for a fridge, we found the minibar was in situ & working (but empty) so we used that for our water and wine. Thomson Platinum should really sort out the hotel over this matter. £24 for two weeks use of the safe is a bit much. Also, they charge 90c for a pool towel refresh, calling this an “environmental tax” – bit of a cheek.

Full board - Don’t bother booking this. Half Board is adequate. There is a good a la carte snack bar with plenty of choice; even with drinks this was cheaper than the full board price. Full board would give you that same sort of buffet as the evenings.

Piano Bar – Quiet, the place for a nice comfortable drink.

Cocktail Bar / Entertainment Room – Noisy, kid’s play-time from 20.30 before the entertainment at 22.00. Entertainment is rubbish, but do go and see the Elvis if you want a laugh at just how bad he is – have a few drinks first.

Free Hotel Bus trips – Go to Puerto Del Mogan – a lovely port area with beautiful flowers decorating the house in the pedestrian area. Don’t bother with Puerto Rico it is tacky. Loads of timeshare touts who continually hassle, rubbish shops in the shopping centre and loads of Asian run shops along the front trying to sell rubbish cameras and camcorders. I took a brief look and could only see old low spec models – be warned if it’s cheap it isn’t going to be much good!

Hotel Management – The management were seen around ensuring everything was OK, but I was a bit disappointed that they remained unapproachable. I never saw them addressing the quests or enquiring if all was OK.

Foreign Exchange – You will find drinks and incidentals expensive due the current exchange rate.

Remember overall this is an excellent hotel, in a great location with good food and service. Go and enjoy, these comments are only to inform on less significant matters.
