We have just returned from the Gloria Palace Hotel, San Agustin, Gran Canaria, and we have to say it was very very hard to leave. We had read some poor reviews about the hotel, so were very very surprised to find completely the opposite. A beautifully decorated hotel, with friendly staff. We had a two-bedroomed room, fully refurbished, at side of the main building, with a few steps leading out to the main pool area, which was perfect for our two small children. We were a party of 17 people, 7 of which were under 12, and they were fully occupied and happy all week. We stayed on half board basis, and couldn't fault our breakfast and evening meal. The choices were exceptional, lots of salads, and fruit, good choices of meat including steaks and lamb, and fresh seafood. The children enjoyed the freedom of choice, and dirty plates and cutlery were quickly taken when not required. There was always a smile from the staff when served. We never had to wait long for a drink, and the pool bar staff were esceptionally friendly. Our room was cleaned daily by lovely housekeeping ladies, and fresh towels readily available. Entertainment in the main salon was good, and all the compares spoke every language going, which was good. The only complaint I have is that the main pool table indoors was in the smoking room, but this was airy and not overpowering, and didn't tamper our enjoyment at all.
All I can say is that the people who have written bad reviews on this site for this hotel must have been either over fussy, or miserable people, because I would definately stay again, and some of the people in our party are very frequent travellers who are very very fussy and enjoy top class travel, and they couldn't fault it. Maybe if you smile when you ask, you get a smile back!

“Very Dissapointing 2 Weeks.......! !”

Gloria Palace San Agustin

We stayed for 2 weeks, including new years eve.
This is a big hotel, loads of space inside and outside,
Rooms are clean and seviced daily.
It has lovely pool area, and 2 pools on the roof, we spent all of the time on the roof, it was nice and quiet there..
BUT.......
The reception was always too busy,,
Evening entertainment was awful,, the worst ever..
The dining room was disorganised, tables too close together,
cold plates, staff with big trollies stocking the food counter, and no manager on the floor,.
In fact we never saw a manager for the 2 weeks. !
The bar did'nt stock our drinks,..
We got a taxi into playa del ingles every night for entertainment and a drink, as so did a lot of people we talked to.
Having been to playa del ingles 5 or 6 tmes, we wanted to try the gloria palace san agustin,, and were very dissapointed,.....
The only conclusion i can come up with is, this hotel is very badly run., and if they can get that right, then it could have a lot more to offer...............

“No service at all”

Gloria Palace San Agustin

We went to Gloria Palace in San Agustin for two weeks in december 2007. The swedish travel agency sell it as a 5-star hotel. This was the first time we tried the "all inclusive" concept.
We had a nice appartment with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a terrace. But nowhere to sit the whole family, just one chair in each bedroom. And the beds were the most terrible I´ve ever experienced! So hard we had difficult to sleep.
The pools were lovely and the sunbeds too. There are two pool-bars where you can get drinks, snacks and hamburgers. The sign outside one of the pool-bars said "open between 11 - 19", but they closed at 18 o´clock, once I heared a man ordering a cappucino at 17.59 and the waiter said NO! Time is time! I spoke with the waiter about it (I speak spanish) and he said that they close at 19 o´clock during the summer! Then they have to get two different signs, one for the summer and another one for the winter, thats my oppinion!
The waiters (except for a few persons) were not nice at all, no smiling and often ignoring the guests if they were not spanish.
And the worst thing of the all: the buffet restaurant. When you enter you have to show your all-inclusive card for the staff and then look for a table on your own. When you´ve found a table then what? Waiting for the staff to lay the table and ask what you want to drink? No way, you could sit and wait for an hour or so. You just had to take a walk and look for a waiter and kindly ask him if you could order your drinks to the meal. If you were lucky, you cold get the drinks, if the waiter had other thinks to do, you just had to wait. Very frustating! The food was ok though.
The animacion team were really good and our children had a nice time playing ping-pong etc. The evening entertainment was also nice, and the waiters in the bar salon even smiled some times..........

“Not really ok”

Gloria Palace San Agustin

I spent one week in Gloria Palace together with my family during Christmas 2007. The hotel might have been very nice a few years ago, however today it needs a renovation. The facade is falling down (you can see holes here and there in the plaster which is not ok for a 4 star hotel). We had a few rainy days during our stay in San Agustin, and those days there were buckets standing here and there in the corridors on towels to collect the water dripping from the ceiling.. We could see that this was nothing new; it had been going on for a while (!!!) Can a four star hotel have dripping water damages like this?
There were also stray cats sleeping on the couches in the hotel lobby.. (?!?)

The hotel has two restaurants, one on the groundfloor and one on the roof (all bars excluded). We never had dinner in the roof restaurant. In the larger restaurant on the groundfloor they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner (buffet). The food is good, especially the fish. However, after a couple of days eating the same food with no variation we lost our appetite and had to go to restaurants outside the hotel area (although we had all inclusive cards). The restaurant is in shortage of personell and therefore we often had to clean the tables from glasses, napkins, plates and scraps of food before we could have our meals. Furthermore some guests chose to go outside to the snackbar to order their drinks for the meals in the restaurant since there were no waiters available (This caused some conflicts between the guests and the poolbar personell who did not like this).

Overall the personel were friendly and in the reception they spoke English, Spanish, Italian, German, Swedish(!) and French.. (these were the different languages I heard, and I find it impressive!)

The rooms were nice, especially the ocean view from the balconies. Overall the hotel is nice, however it needs a renovation and more personell, then I can recommend it

“pleasant hotel, not so keen on resort”

Gloria Palace San Agustin

my family and i stayed here in August 2005, we had never been to gran canaria before and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel and adjoining thermal baths / spa complex.
Rooms:
spacious rooms with a separate seating area and fairly large balcony with a sea views. We were on a high floor and the vista was spectacular. Bathroom was adequate.
Housekeeping:
bit of a sore point this. We were forced to complain on a number of issues, first the bathroom was not properly cleaned when we arrived, there was some mould between the tiles in the shower - indicating that the bathroom had not been properly cleaned for a while. After some insistence i was granted an audience with the head housekeeper and after i voiced my concerns, the bathroom was properly cleaned every day. We also had an issue with towels and sheets, this is meant to be a 4 star and that usually means clean towels and sheets every day - not so here, again, complaining worked. When the housekeeping staff did their job, they did it properly, but it should not be necessary to prompt them into action. possibly they are understaffed.
Facilities:
ample pool area with plenty of loungers and umbrellas. The real bonus though was the massive spa / thermal baths attached to the hotel, these alone are worth the visit. There were a lot of Spanish guests here specifically for treatments and, towards the end of our stay, an entire football team arrived.
Food:
surprisingly good, we were here on half board basis and the kitchen did not disappoint, both breakfast and dinner were more than adequate with plenty of choice. For lunch there are two bars, the pool bar is pretty basic, but the larger bar near the entertainment area has a good choice of meat, fish and salad dishes at reasonable prices. Service was attentive and efficient, no complaints there.
Entertainment:
good kids club and there was a show every night, varying degrees of interest and competence, but pretty much what you would expect, kept the children amused and, sometimes, the adults too.
Decor:
entrance hall is very impressive and the hotel occupies a commanding position on the hillside with great views from almost everywhere. Decor is a bit dated, check out the giant neon shoes at the entrance to the disco!!
Staff:
bar staff good, rest mostly ok, certainly not great, but have seen much worse
Location:
a little inconvenient, half way up a hill, the beach is some distance away and you have the choice of running the gauntlet of a very busy moterway like road, or using the overpass which then forces you to go through a semi deserted and quasi derelict shopping mall - i would say this place was built in the 80's and has gone progressively downhill since. as a result, we spent most of our time at the hotel.
General area:
not great, as stated above, the resort is tired and desperately in need of a facelift. we went to Playa des Ingles one evening, the promenade is pleasant enough but the restaurant / bar 'promoters' more insistent and irritating than usual. Later in the evening the 'yob' element emerged which was quite unpleasant. One good thing about San Atnonio was that the resort was much quieter than Playa.
Overall, the hotel was good, after we sorted out the housekeeping issues, it was certainly adequate and good value for money, and the spa is defiantly worth going back for, but maybe a long week-end rather than a whole week.
