my family and i stayed here in August 2005, we had never been to gran canaria before and were pleasantly surprised by the hotel and adjoining thermal baths / spa complex.
Rooms:
spacious rooms with a separate seating area and fairly large balcony with a sea views. We were on a high floor and the vista was spectacular. Bathroom was adequate.
Housekeeping:
bit of a sore point this. We were forced to complain on a number of issues, first the bathroom was not properly cleaned when we arrived, there was some mould between the tiles in the shower - indicating that the bathroom had not been properly cleaned for a while. After some insistence i was granted an audience with the head housekeeper and after i voiced my concerns, the bathroom was properly cleaned every day. We also had an issue with towels and sheets, this is meant to be a 4 star and that usually means clean towels and sheets every day - not so here, again, complaining worked. When the housekeeping staff did their job, they did it properly, but it should not be necessary to prompt them into action. possibly they are understaffed.
Facilities:
ample pool area with plenty of loungers and umbrellas. The real bonus though was the massive spa / thermal baths attached to the hotel, these alone are worth the visit. There were a lot of Spanish guests here specifically for treatments and, towards the end of our stay, an entire football team arrived.
Food:
surprisingly good, we were here on half board basis and the kitchen did not disappoint, both breakfast and dinner were more than adequate with plenty of choice. For lunch there are two bars, the pool bar is pretty basic, but the larger bar near the entertainment area has a good choice of meat, fish and salad dishes at reasonable prices. Service was attentive and efficient, no complaints there.
Entertainment:
good kids club and there was a show every night, varying degrees of interest and competence, but pretty much what you would expect, kept the children amused and, sometimes, the adults too.
Decor:
entrance hall is very impressive and the hotel occupies a commanding position on the hillside with great views from almost everywhere. Decor is a bit dated, check out the giant neon shoes at the entrance to the disco!!
Staff:
bar staff good, rest mostly ok, certainly not great, but have seen much worse
Location:
a little inconvenient, half way up a hill, the beach is some distance away and you have the choice of running the gauntlet of a very busy moterway like road, or using the overpass which then forces you to go through a semi deserted and quasi derelict shopping mall - i would say this place was built in the 80's and has gone progressively downhill since. as a result, we spent most of our time at the hotel.
General area:
not great, as stated above, the resort is tired and desperately in need of a facelift. we went to Playa des Ingles one evening, the promenade is pleasant enough but the restaurant / bar 'promoters' more insistent and irritating than usual. Later in the evening the 'yob' element emerged which was quite unpleasant. One good thing about San Atnonio was that the resort was much quieter than Playa.
Overall, the hotel was good, after we sorted out the housekeeping issues, it was certainly adequate and good value for money, and the spa is defiantly worth going back for, but maybe a long week-end rather than a whole week.
