You cannot visit Gran Canaria and not hire a car to the centre of the Island for the full experience of the real canaries! Did not love all the winding roads with their blind bends and twists that turn your stomach - but it was fun! The scenery on the drive up is amazing and the landscape is beautiful, the walk up to Roque Nublo is spectacular. Roque Nublo is the second highest point on the island of Gran Canaria, my partner and I walked to the peak in glorious sunshine. On the top there is a cool breeze but fantastic views. It is well worth the effort and the day out, however avoid trekking to the waterfall at present though as it is barely a trickle - the photos online and on postcards are fantastic but I am guessing they have not had much rain lately. A tip for Roque Nublo is to arrive between 1000-1100 one before the clouds come over in the afternoon and two before the coaches arrive, school trips and people on day trips.
