“Bad food, bad service and did not get what we paid for”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

Upon first appearance, El Pilon looks like a good quality restaurant... Tucked away from Passeg de Bom, the restaurant has a welcoming entrance with seafood theme and fresh decor inside. The menu was quite expensive when compared to other restaurants in Mallorca.

We decided upon a jug of cava sangria to share, a garlic bread to share and we both ordered grilled swordfish. The cava sangria was served and tasted like a sangria severely weakened and sweetened by lemonade. There appeared to be no alcohol in this jug. Our garlic bread came next and was lovely. We would have no hesitations recommending this dish.

Within a minute of finishing the entree, the main was plated. Our grilled swordfish was served with a potato, salad and vegetables. The swordfish (which is generally a beautiful fish to eat) was tasteless and overcooked. The vegetables which looked as though they came out of a frozen packet, were also overcooked. The salad was not fresh and the potato was dry as though it had been cooked in the morning and reheated prior to serving. After a taste of the items on the place, we deemed the rest inedible.

During the course of the meal our supposed cava sangria was constantly refilled. After 3 glasses each we confirmed that there was absolutely no alcohol in this jug.

We expressed our disappointment with the staff, and thankfully the manager was kind enough to not charge us for the two mains.

Despite this, we were still charged 23Eu for a garlic bread and alcohol-free sangria. A real disappointment after our travels through Spain, where the food on the whole, has been of reasonable quality.

“Waiter almost ruined the experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

We made our reservation earlier in the day with the owner, and he was very friendly. He left shortly after we arrived for our reservation. We were an unusual bunch of hungry tourists. We spoke English, German and Romanian. What luck when Janna waited on us, and she spoke Romanian! She was so kind to our friends and made them feel at ease. She suggested a great menu and took our drink orders. Then an older waiter came by to take our food order, we kindly asked for Janna to wait on us. I know that isn't typical, and it wasn't personal against him, but he became so angry. He discussed loudly at Janna over his displeasure and for the next hour threw a tantrum by saying rude things loudly and dropping dishes, bottles and plates down louder than usual to show his displeasure. Funny thing is that he didn't know that two of us spoke Spanish as well, and we understood what he said! He called us stupid and uneducated. Really??? So while the food is good, I would probably not return, and I want the owner to know what kind of staff he has working for him.

As far as the restaurant is concerned, the food is fantastic and upscale for typical tapas. It was a little on the pricey side, but for a special occasion it was worth it. But it is hard to enjoy an expensive meal when you have a stubborn waiter 3 feet behind you throwing dishes and blurting out slurs about the guests that pay his salary.

Thank you Janna for doing the best you could in that situation.

“Don't miss it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

If you're looking for authentic tapas in an authentic atmosphere- this is the place. Up a side street off Born you need to walk over glass floor with sea creatures, they're not alive but feels funny. Once in Juan and staff will look after you well. Some of best tapas ever, when you leave just can't wait to go back. It's a real treat, not the cheapest place, could easily do 40-50 e a head with drinks but well worth it.

“Still good but the charm is gone!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

I have been visiting El Pilon for.........xxx years! The other day it was almost empty and "fancy". Gone were all the charming nig nags and the place actually looked spic and span! Dark cosy furniture replaced with white wooden chairs and tables. El Pilon has a great location in Palma, the best and kindest staff and very good Tapas so do go there! I love the Tapas, the "food" is not as good and will go back next week! However, this is a great spot to meet in since it is right across the street from "The Golden Arches" and Bar Bosch-easy to find. You can have oysters and live lobster from the tank or simply nibble away on Tapas. Small tables in the alley outside for people watching and smokers.
