I hesitate to recommend this hotel because I want to be able to stay there once or twice a year without any fully-booked problems. They are mostly full or nearly full in the high season, so Isuppose my review will make things worse. My main reason for writing is to try to encourage Americans to stay there. At present it is full of old(er) folk from the UK, especially Northerners, and this does make things a little repetitious; a greater range of clientele would be preferable.
This hotel is 'hidden' because its excellent qualities are not immediately visible. Its 3 star status points to a hotel of much poorer quality, which it certainly is not.. And it is a gem because it has almost everything you want from a hotel in the Med - an airy, cooling, atmosphere, very clean, tile-floor rooms, a large balcony with a fully-opening french window and desk service which has excellent English and local knowledge. One thing it does not have is space in the indoor pool and sun terrace area. Also it does not have a relaxing lounge with comfortable armchairs. The upstairs bar area next to the pool could do with re-styling.
It is inexpensive. If you book through Travel Republic or Thompson or Expedia you can secure a fortnight's b@b for two in July-August, flying from the UK, for around remarkable c.£1,200. It is not cheap and nasty. It is cheap with quality. For instance, a new feature is a cook concentrating on frying eggs to your satisfaction for breakfast. The breakfast room has a fine view of the yachts-full harbour. The (old-established) dining staff change the table each time it is used, replacing with crisp-white tablecloths. Self-service coffee, from machines, is plentiful but it does get a bit crowded in this sector of the buffet; toast comes from a moving-grill machine; and bacon, boiled eggs, sausages, beans and tomatoes come from lid-protected pans, with warm plates.
The whole place has a pleasing simplicity. It is not sumptuous in style but the decor is fresh and in excellent taste, with much use of walnut-style wood veneer.
And the location; stand on the balcony at night and see the miles-long view over the harbour; the cathedral to your left and the cruise-ship berths to your right. And you will rightfully say to yourself: this is a pleasing and convenient location and this hotel is one of the best-value venues in the Med.; and Palma is one of the most attractive cities there.
