“Excellent City Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

Family of 5 all adults 27th July to 3rd August and had no problems in this lovely hotel. Check in and out was quick and room keys provided for all 5 of us.

We had rooms on 5th and 8th floors at the back of the hotel which were quiet compared to traffic noise at the front. Rooms were immaculate, small, modern and perfectly formed. Bathrooms were a decent size with good water pressure in showers, clean towels daily and toiletries provided. Rooms had a safe, fridge, wardrobe with plenty hanging space and shelves with hangers provided, large TV, WiFi, one chair and one stool, telephone, excellent lighting and plenty of plug sockets. Rooms cleaned daily and beds changed at least twice per week.

Restaurant staff Fernanda, Daniel, Aurora, Desi, Eric, Deyene and all the chefs were especially lovely and helpful (Hope I have not missed out anyone). There was a good selection of food and drinks for people from every country and you could eat as much as you wished. They catered for specialist dietry needs which we required as my husband has Coeliac Disease. The chefs cooked fresh bacon and eggs every morning and meats at night. At busy periods in the morning you might have to queue for a few minutes while food was cooked freshly to your liking.

Yes the pool is small but it is all you need to cool down from the hot sun on the sun deck, there is a hot tub, toilet, shower, tables, chairs wifi, and bar on the 3rd floor where the pool is. On the sun deck sunbeds and parasoles are provided but no sunbed towels. The deck is smallish but gets plenty sun and faces the Marina, it does get busy in the late afternoon.

The hotel has not quite finished its renovations, this did not impact on our holiday in any way.

Location of the hotel is very central to the main town an easy walk. We arrived from the airport on the Number 1 blue EMT airport bus. Cost of this trip has just gone up from E2.50 each to E3.00 each, journey was about 30 minutes and service efficient.

Basically this hotel "Does what it says on the tin" and if you want better than 4 star the go elsewhere. The staff are all very pleasant, helpful and hard working and try very hard to please everyone all of the time. I would go back again without hesitation and recommend this hotel.

Good central location, contemporary and modern. Recently renovated. Lunch was ok. Value for money. We were in room 816 and I have to say that the view was fantastic. It's right on the Marina with easy access to the main hotspots. Renovation has been done to a high standard. Definitely recommend

My girlfriend and I stayed in July 2013.

The hotel is recently refurbished and has been done so to a reasonably high quality. The design is modern with hard wood floors, dark timber and lots of glass.

We stayed in a premier room with a sea view. The room was clean, bathroom had recently been fitted and the decor is stylish. The rooms are a little compact however the views make up for these. It is well worth the additional cost, the balconies and large and offer great views of the harbour and cathedral.

The location is great, a ten minute walk from the old town and situated close by to shops, bars and restaurants.

We would happily visit again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

My partner and I stayed here for 9 nights in July 2013. Costa Azul is a fairly small city hotel with great location on the Paseo overlooking the harbor. Check-in was fast and our wish for a high floor room resulted in 4th floor which turned out to be great. Staff very friendly at the front desk. The room was spacious, very nice and had a large bathroom with walk-in shower, comfortable beds, modern design, spotlessly clean and fab view of the yachts. There is a nice sundeck with great view, modern chairs and a tiny pool and jacuzzi on the 3rd floor. Most times enough loungers (maybe a bit busy in the afternoon). Pool area closes at 7pm which is too early for my taste (would be nice to jump in after long day in the city). Free wifi worked well in the room, on the balcony and at the sun loungers but was quite slow (mornings a bit faster). Breakfast had a great selection with stylish and efficient egg station cooking to your liking. Different hams, sausages, mushrooms, cheeses, fresh fruits. Coffee was brought to your table. One morning the bread rolls were hard as crackers (obviously 2-3 days old) but other breads were fresh. The waiter apologized for the inconvenience. All waiters were friendly and greeted friendly, the omelette cook (with dark hair) was especially friendly and talkative. Bacon was also cooked freshly "a la plancha". Service was overall very good throughout the hotel. We did some bike tours to beaches so requested several times ice cubes to take with us in a small cooler and this was dealt with fast and professionally without any problems. Also getting ice cubes in the evening was easy at the lounge bar (but was open only till 11pm). Bike and car rental was easy as there are several companies next door. Bikes start at 12€/day (at Platja de Palma you get one for 5€/day). Mini markets on the Paseo are very overpriced (for instance a 0,33l can of coke was at 1,75€!) so better go to Mercadona market one street up to Santa Catalina (you get there cans of local beer for 45 cent). It's a 10 minute walk. The only real downsides were slow and small elevators (not enough for the hotel) and inconsistent cleaning service as toiletries were not replaced automatically on a daily basis. We complained about it 4 times and did get replacement after complaining. It should happen automatically if you pay more than 150€ a night in a 4 star city hotel. We did a lot of sports so needed shampoo etc and it was annoying to come back exhausted to see that there was nothing to shower with. In other terms it's a great hotel. We recommend this hotel warmly to people that want to have a modern and central city hotel with a nice view, free wifi, good breakfast and easy access to running/biking at the waterfront.

Room Tip: Get high floor with seaview - floor 4 and upwards is great. In the lower levels there was still reno...

Clean, friendly, efficient place right on the main drag in Palma - try to get a room with a view of the harbor. Bathrooms are great. Breakfast buffet at 9E is a very good deal. Minor complaints: small, slow elevators, lumpy pillows. But all in all, a comfortable place to stay.

Our family of 4 stayed here for 3 nights in mid July and were very impressed with the hotel. Modern and light decor throughout and a very high standard of cleanliness. The staff from reception, through to bar and restaurant were very friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble.

Sea view from our newly refurbished room on the 1st floor was amazing, even though we were on a lower level. Room was very well equipped with flat screen TV mounted on wall and plenty of sockets enabling us to charge iPods, phones and ipad at same time. Bathroom was modern with a very good shower. We did have a problem with the shower leaking on the first day but once we informed reception, they sent up a maintenance man straight away followed by a cleaner, we were very impressed with their prompt action.

Double sliding doors out onto our balcony meant there was no road noise at all when inside the room. The air conditioning was great. Whilst there was building work ongoing it didn't impact on our stay.

The wifi was free and, whilst you had to reconnect each time, was very quick and accessible throughout the hotel including the 3rd floor decked area. This area in particular was lovely with small but nicely maintained pool and jacuzzi which the kids loved and great food and drinks service.

Whilst we didn't have evening meals the breakfast was fantastic. Lots of variety and freshly cooked to order bacon and eggs.

Don't be put off by the lack of photos on their website as we found every part of the hotel was well maintained and modern. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for rooms on the front of the hotel with sea view.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

We have stayed here many times over the last twelve years, and prior to this year have always booked through Thomsons. However, as Thomsons are no longer involved in arranging holidays to this hotel, I booked directly with the hotel this time, at a considerably higher price.
We found many changes this year, some good and some not so good.
Firstly, a number of the old familiar staff have gone and been replaced by new, mainly younger people. However, we could find no reasons to criticise the new staff at all - they were all very pleasant, hard working and professional. The lifts are the same - occasionally unreliable.
We had a room on a high floor. Unfortunately it was at the end where building work was still in progress, so for the whole fortnight we were right above it, with the sound of hammering and drilling going on all day. It didn’t affect us too much, as we went out every day from about 10am to 3pm.
The rooms and bathrooms are much improved. The rooms now have proper air conditioning rather than the old units that used to be on the balconies. There are large flat screen televisions - we could receive Sky News, CNN, BBC World News, plus BBC 1 and BBC2 which both had subtitles on 888 for those, like me, with hearing difficulties. The rooms are refurbished and comfortable, but seemed slightly smaller and as before, had only one chair. There were two chairs and a table on the balcony which has clear glass around it giving a much improved view. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower; there was no shortage of hot water, and shampoo and body lotion was supplied. I am fairly certain that on previous visits our bathroom had an emergency pull-cord, and that has gone. If you are now unfortunate enough to fall in the shower and be unable to get up, you could have a long wait until you were discovered if you were on your own. The tap water was fine to drink; it’s not worth buying bottled water. On previous holidays there were two sets of sliding doors to the balcony, which cut the noise from passing traffic completely. There is now only one sliding door, so we could hear some traffic noise, but it was not too bad.
One weekend I was reading on the balcony after dark on both evenings, with the light from the bulb above the balcony. When I found that the light was not working on the Monday evening I asked reception to turn them on, only to be told that they were timed to only work at weekends. I think that is ridiculous - it surely can’t cost all that much to have them lit every night.
The bar prices appeared to be the same as last time we stayed, two years ago. The comfortable armchairs and the tables have gone, and been replaced by white plastic chairs and tables. We found the chairs to be very uncomfortable and therefore used the leather settees inside the front window. Also the chairs make a horrible scraping sound on the floor when moved. The hotel website refers to live music in the bar twice a week. There was none in the two weeks we were there. Also the bar was extremely quiet, whereas in the past it has been fairly busy on most nights. On previous occasions a fair number of customers in the bar were obviously there to watch sport on the television. This time I only saw the TV switched on twice during the fortnight. I don’t know the reasons for the bar being so quiet - is it the uncomfortable chairs, the lack of sport on the TV, or less people staying at the hotel? Maybe it is a combination of all three.
The restaurant has been redecorated, but is still arranged in the same way. As in the bar, the chairs make a loud scraping sound when moved - they really need to have some felt pads put on the bottoms of the chair legs.
Breakfast is good, with plenty of choice. There are jugs of coffee brought to the table if you want, or you can use the new coffee machine which was very good. There is a machine for fruit juices, and we found the orange juice to be very nice, until the last three days we were there, when it appeared to have been watered down, and was little more than coloured water. The ‘show-cooking’ does not work as well as it should. A couple of times I waited by the cooking area for the chef to appear, gave up after a few minutes, did some toast and collected some boiled eggs, and only then did the chef come out of the kitchen as I was walking away. Other times when it was busy he found it hard to keep up with the orders and a queue would form.
Evening meals were, on the whole, very disappointing. When we have previously stayed, booked through Thomsons, meals were being charged at €15 if you paid in the restaurant, but only worked out at £10 if you had booked half-board through Thomsons. This year the meals were €18, yet in my opinion the standard had gone down considerably. One evening there were cheeseburgers (in a 4 star hotel!), another time there was ‘Veal Estroganoff’. I have always found veal to be a tender and tasty meat - this was tasteless strips of very tough meat. The ‘pork chops’ were in fact ribs, which were mainly bones with a little meat between them. On our last evening the meat choices were either pieces of chicken with slices of banana on skewers for show cooking, or already prepared meatballs. Once again the chef was absent in the kitchen and I didn’t fancy meatballs, so didn’t have a main course that evening, just soup and a sweet. Apart from one year when the kitchens were being updated, all the catering in the other years we have stayed was better than this years.
Would we stay again? I don’t know. I would be sorry if we didn’t, as we have enjoyed many holidays there previously, but the improvements don’t make up for the things which were not so good. And as for the four stars - this is NOT four-star catering in the evening. We have had four star catering in the Porto Bay hotels in Portugal and Madeira, and the standard in the Costa Azul is nowhere near. If we decide to return to Palma again we will be checking out some other hotels on this website before making a decision on where to stay.
